Griffin Media drops their all sports radio 1170 The Blitz and replaced it with News on 6 Now which airs live newscast from CBS and CW shows and replays other news stories when News on 6 isn’t on air for a live newscast. Breaking News and Severe Weather Coverage will also air on KOTV-AM the flip happened this morning. All I know is the ratings for The Blitz wasn’t doing well and that is part of the reason for the change. This is the first time since the digital switch that KOTV is on the radio prior to the HD and digital switch they were on 87.7FM in Tulsa.

At least KOTV-AM is a 50KW clear channel.

That's very nice to have since their potential audience is many times larger than their TV footprint at night.  Great for severe weather coverage.

Yes but it would be nice for them to return to the FM side as they used to be.

And a better use of a signal for sure rather than plugging in syndicated talk shows, brokered or religious content. Hopefully a translator is in the works for the FM side.

AM radio needs to be more accessible for what Griffin is doing.

A simple, inexpensive AM receiver is infinitely more valuable than trying to stream breaking information during a severe weather or other emergency.  Less margin of error when things go down.

I wish the industry would stop putting on the garbage it does on AM radio.  Make it useful instead of trying to be profitable.

  • 2 weeks later...

Living in Tulsa as a kid in the 90s, KOTV had a pretty sizable following on 87.7 FM as people drove around town during news timeslots. I'm not sure many other Channel 6 stations promoted it as heavily as they did, especially during severe weather outbreaks. So I'm not entirely surprised by this... I guess since Griffin has owned a Tulsa radio cluster for a while I'm surprised it didn't happen earlier. Using the 50,000-watt Class A 1170 AM signal for a straight all-news TV simulcast is a bit curious though, so I do kinda wonder if this is more of a frequency parking move until they figure out what to do with 1170 long term.
