TAMPA - The giant posters of two local television meteorologists have come down.

On Monday, the city ruled that WTVT, Channel 13, now is in compliance with the sign code, said Curtis Lane, director of code enforcement.

In January, Fox 13 put a 42-foot-high banner depicting meteorologist Paul Dellegatto on its SkyTower on Kennedy Boulevard, and later posted a banner of a second meteorologist.

That set into motion a series of questions at City Hall about whether the signs complied with Tampa's sign code and a separate set of rules governing signs on Kennedy.

The city argued the banners were too large. According to city code, signs attached to buildings in the Kennedy Boulevard area cannot exceed more than one square foot per linear foot of building frontage facing Kennedy Boulevard for structures taller than two stories.

Also, signs classified as temporary banners cannot stay up more than 30 consecutive days. The Channel 13 signs had been up since January.

In April, Fox 13 was cited by code enforcement for having an illegal sign, said Julia Cole, the city attorney handling the situation. After receiving the citation, the station filed two requests for code interpretation. Both times, the city said the signs did not comply with the rules.

The station's decision last week to take down the signs means Channel 13 will not face fines.

A Channel 13 official did not return calls for comment.
