former newsboy 52
Call it a sign-off, a close, a goodbye - whatever it's technically called, Channel 7 doesn't do it anymore. At least not the way they always have. And at least not at 10PM. For the past several weeks I think, instead of news anchors Ron Magers and Kathy Brock ending their broadcast by saying their names as well as those of Jerry Taft's and Mark Giangreco's, it's just been a simple "goodnight". (Not sure if this is the case for all other newscasts though, not having watched). I wonder why the change? I liked the old routine. I know they usually do that when they're running short on time at the end of a newscast. Maybe, they have really been running short on time at the end of the 10PM newscasts this past month with all the extra political coverage/segments and other special segments being squeezed in. It's also possible the anchors were told to trim their extra chat/talk this past month so they can still have the same amount of news content that they normally have in addition to the extra political coverage/segments and special pieces. I've been really busy this past month so I haven't got the chance to watch the ends of any newscasts. Have the actual closings of the newscasts (Chicago skyline or State St. pedestrian shot with music and credits) been cut short too? A sign-off that still comes to my mind is the sign-off WBBM CBS 2 used to do. I call it the "airline pilot sign-off" because it had the line "Thank you for making CBS 2 your choice for news".. mbhcity 3
A sign-off that still comes to my mind is the sign-off WBBM CBS 2 used to do. I call it the "airline pilot sign-off" because it had the line "Thank you for making CBS 2 your choice for news".. KNBC also used this signoff for years, I still think they do...though they say "Thanks for making us your #1 choice for news." The CBS Duopoly (KCBS/KCAL) in LA has a similar, yet braggy signoff, "We know you have many choices for news..but we thank you for choosing CBS2 or KCAL9" They introduced this on Martin Luther King Day 2003, when KCBS/KCAL unveiled its new campaign/sets/graphics etc...just after KCAL was sold to CBS the year before. I think both signoffs were inspired by Nancy Bauer-Gonzales, who has been an ND at both KNBC (during the 90's) and KCAL (as well as KCBS) since 2001-2. cbs2worksforyou 44
I liked it when CBS 2 used to say "thanks for making News 2 Chicago your choice for news". I don't like the signoffs when the anchors say their names again. I already know who they are, they say their names at the beginning, then there is a little bug on the screen that tells us, then there is a little opening/mid news montage that tells us again. It is pointless to me when they say their names at the end again. He has an art to it...
