MidnightJunkie 55
Okay, we all have our favorite anchors that are much loved and much admired so bear with me here guys...Gary Warner was mine. Gary retired last night after more than 34 plus years of anchoring the news in El Paso, TX at one station, KELP-tv 13 which then became KVIA 7. I have to admit during Estela's goodbye message to Gary tears filled my eyes as well *embarassed*. I suppose for me it was sad to see an El Paso institution leave the news desk after a fantastic 15 year pairing up with Estela Casas and to see the chemistry they had and how genuinely sad they both were was kind of heart breaking. Now if you live any any other market the weeping, the tearful goodbyes, and the tribute are just plain cheesy, trust me, I myself have thought that of other markets with their departing anchors. But For me I grew up watching channel 7 and Gary. He was always on in the background during dinner time while I sat around with my family. When I left and moved across the country nearly 10 years ago, watching the newscasts on the internet was a way to feel close to my hometown away from home. I will truly miss his integrity, honesty, fairness, and calm presence. He was El Paso's Peter Jennings. [\sappy personal rant] Also, just to show the kind of person gary was I left him a voicemail at the station wishing him well into retirement, and telling him was a close connection he was to my home and that he'll be missed. I left no number to call back thinking he wouldn't have the time to reply and I didn't expect a reply. He called me back to personally thank me for the well wishes and to say he's gotten plenty of emails and cards but that I was the only long distance phone call he'd gotten. He also told me he hopes I can make the time to visit El Paso in the near future. the video of the last newscast is on their site http://www.kvia.com Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/3764-gary-warner-says-goodbye-to-el-paso-news/ Share on other sites
