ecs0013 9
So, I'm watching WTHR's news tonight and something felt off - all the shots of the solo anchor were close-up and she was at a really small desk with a plasma behind her (and a blue background and some wood pillars behind that) - it looks like the desk they usually use to tease later newscasts or use for special segments. When they went to and came back from commercial, there was no use of the crane camera or anything like that, the weather was done completely in front of a green screen, and the Sports Jam (Sunday night sports show) was done in front of a bigger plasma with blue panels and wood pillars behind it (rather than the large Sports Jam studio). It just has a 200+ market feel from the mid-'90s... This leads me to believe.... New set (and possibly graphics) coming soon? The set is about 4 years old, the new graphics are about 5 years old...I'll try to grab some captures from the rebroadcast on the SkyTrak Weather Network (bad quality on cable) and also get some stuff tomorrow morning. Until then, this is the old set/graphics to compare with my description: I know this could go in graphics or sets, but it's all speculative right now... who?cares 254
According to 168 Design Group's website back in April they were working on something in April to debut "this summer", so just maybe. That set kinda looks like WTHI's NEW set. Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/4109-wthr-premieres-new-set-graphics/#findComment-36018 Share on other sites
who?cares 254
Tonight at the end of the 11 broadcast John Stehr said that they are getting a new set in the main studio, and they'll be back over there with something really great in a couple of weeks. WickedYoungMan 0
Thanks for that Who?Cares! I have to admit, WTHR has redressed their current set a little too much in the past decade for my tastes. Not that there's anything necessarily wrong with that, but it seems they can't stick with one look for too long! Graphics included. Though, it's okay, because their stuff is at the top of the game among the other stations, though the other stations don't do too bad (well, except for WXIN whose graphics & set general suck IMHO.) mobilene 2
What? You mean WTHI finally abandoned the set they've had since NINETEEN EIGHTY NINE? Say it ain't so! As for WTHR: Doesn't the set they'd been using go back to like 1995? While I agree they dinked with it too often, I think it's remarkable that it has seemed pretty modern and fresh for so many years. jim Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/4109-wthr-premieres-new-set-graphics/#findComment-36118 Share on other sites
ecs0013 9
Yeah - I saw that too about them getting something new. I think they've kept the set pretty much the same for at least the last 5 years (they've switched some camera angles for some stand-ups), and the graphics have more or less been tweaked and evolved. Not nearly as much messing with things as WISH-TV has been doing (although their current incarnation is nice). They have kept the wooden look since back to '95, but the current set replaced the projection screens (with visible seams) with a giant one that often sat on the left of the anchors. Can anyone confirm/deny if WTHR's set is actually just a reworking of the previous one? The graphics have been there for about 5 years, too (with some new additions, but the overall same look), and during that time, WISH has switched their graphics twice (set once), WRTV has switched graphics/music twice (and uggified their set), and WXIN has switched their graphics two or three times, too. I think at one point in about 2004 or 2005, the entire Indianapolis market decided to just change for the sake of change. I was actually a fan of 'THR's old graphics - they were plain, but the cream+red and cream+blue were cool combinations and just went with the Rainmaker well. WickedYoungMan 0
Has anyone heard anymore on this? It's been 3 weeks now since they went to the temp. set. WickedYoungMan 0
WTHR unveiled their new site and new graphics today. I don't have any screenies (someone else can probably post them.) Personally, I'm not sure what to think. It's a different for sure (well the graphic at least) from what we're used to from WTHR. It's a little more colder both with the graphics and new set though. They spent a good few minutes talking about the upgrades. More HD TV sets. They did a story that was in a "storyboard" type presentation, one story but went to three different HD TVs to talk about it. Apparently there were some upgrades to the Weather dept. and their equipment as well. That's it in a nutshell. Not sure if it's an "upgrade" or not. Hopefully something comes along to show. ecs0013 9
Yeah - I'll capture the rebroadcast late tonight and probably have something up tomorrow - I liked how the old graphics didn't really have any edges since there were so many gradients - the new ones are nice, but look really blocky and '90s-esque (WGN's new graphics anyone?)...The set has parts that reminds me of the old WISH set (lame grey textures in the weather area, lots of plain areas) Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/4109-wthr-premieres-new-set-graphics/#findComment-37878 Share on other sites
ecs0013 9
I'll have something captured soon....It seems like WTHR took their old stuff, MSNBC's graphics, and a little Novocom and threw them in a blender...I'm not sure about the set (having only seen it for about a half hour - there's a lot more HD displays, but the weather center looks like it came out of the '90s otherwise. who?cares 254
the graphics were designed by 168 the same people who designed the old package, and KING 5's graphics. ecs0013 9
Here ya go - I'll be getting more up tomorrow...some interesting things to note: - The peacock is outside of the safe zone on 4:3 TVs, as is the right-hand side of the time/temp bar - The second graphic is used at the beginning of the 11PM newscast while they tease stories - it was actually used with the prior graphics package - The graphics with Batman and the weather one next to it are the teasers when they go to commercial - There is a sports ticker - just a bar... The set isn't bad - a bit of a change, seems more open, and clearly the desk was recycled (they ditched the plasma mounted on the front of it). Since this is a rebroadcast and we have bad weather, they cut in and replaced the forecast with live weather updates... Very original, it looks very sleek and modern compared to their old graphics that they had for a very long time. Set's not too bad either.
