NBC Olympics Coverage

Watching so far. The graphics are, as usual, awesome. I believe the actual competition graphics are generic and done by IOC, but the bumpers and such used by NBC are very slick.

They decided to do something real neat with basketball, which is the only sport using its own theme music... seems NBC couldn't pass up the opportunity to revive the NBA on NBC theme! That was a really nice surprise.

NBC doing great so far. Graphics, announcers, etc.

Two quips:

1) The "International Broadcast Center"...do we really need to see 50 different angles and backdrops each time there is a setup for the next event, or interviews?

2) They could do a better job of promoting the days schedule and cross-promoting the other networks. For instance, watching on NBC during gymnastics they'll throw up a lower third saying, "Swimming in 11 minutes," how about a "15 minutes 68kg boxing on CBNC."

But again, NBC is doing phenomenal with the Olympics. The graphics are very crisp and HD is fantastic.

BTW, just watched the 4 x 100 men's relay. WOW!

The red and yellow graphics are by NBC and their in house people. The bland blue ones are feed graphics sent out by the IOC to all broadcasters.

I believe Dave Barton (NBC's lead designer) is behind the Olympic ones, he has worked at NBC doing their sports stuff for years and did the Torino ones.

They actually do this to an extent, at least on the cable channels. Every so often a little schedule bar will pop up at the bottom of the screen, detailing what's being shown that day and on what network. I've seen the schedule bar once on NBC, but that one only showed what was coming up on NBC. I think that's because NBC is the "big ticket" events and they don't really detail what will be on when during primetime (as they want you to watch all of it I think).

Agreed, that relay was great.

tell that to CBC. They're using a recolor of their current graphics package for studio shows, and although we've had less annoying bugs, we've still had this weird form of "bottomline like" thing once in awhile with schedules and results.

Has anyone got caps/videos of NBC's/cable networks opener or custom graphics (apart from official IOC ones,) so that I can compare graphics to the Australian ones?

Thanks in advance.

Here you go. It's a big file so it will take a while to download.

I uploaded the 10sec opening to Youtube but NBC Sports removed it within 15 minutes.

Maybe it's best to wait till AFTER the Olympics are over to put it on YouTube, where many stuff from past Olympics are on there for all times.

By the way...NBC paid huge broadcast rights for the 1980 Summer games in Moscow (in an attempt to get them out of last place behind CBS and ABC), but because of the U.S.-led boycott, over 100 hours of planned coverage was whittled down to only three. Dick Enberg was going to be the primetime host; Bob Costas had already joined NBC months prior.

There was no Canadian coverage on either CBC or CTV, leaving the BBC as the only English-language broadcaster to air those games from beginning to end.

Kudos for bringing back Roundball Rock. That theme could make today's NBA a lot more watchable. Yesterday, I saw Jim Lampley hosting the morning coverage...which surprised me because I didn't know he still had ties to NBC (all I knew was that he was the NFL Live pregame host in '93)

My only question involves this: What on earth is Cris Collinsworth doing there? I thought he only covered the NFL.

What drives me nuts is during primetime, us West Coasters sometimes get the live bug in the corner of the screen like the rest of the country even though we see everything on three hour delay. At the same time, during the rare live shows everyone sees on cable, there is no live bug.
