WCBD drops sports from weekday news

In Charleston, SC, WCBD (2, NBC) has decided to drop sports from their newscasts on weekdays. Sports will be included inside the newscast.

Two has already started doing this, with Tom Brady's injury being a part of the news, not the sports.

They will continue doing regular sportscasts on weekends.

Will this experiment later extend to other Media General stations?

I'd hate the same to happen to WFLA. If they were to drop weekday sports -- albeit D-Rays, Bucs, Magic (Orlando), and Lightning, as well as local high school and college sports teams -- viewers would have to scramble between WTSP, WFTS, and WTVT respectively for weekday sports reports.

Not feeling this one.

I doubt it will happen to WJAR. They're pretty proud of their sports department.

Don't hold your breathe. WVTM's used to have a 4-person sports staff during the NBC-ownership with full sportscast and a weekend sports show from 10:30-11:00pm on Sunday night, but upon Media General getting hold of the station the sports staff is now just 2 people with basically nothing expect the 3-4 minutes of sports during the evening newscast.

Also, WCBD, starting Monday, 9/29 (the same day that WCSC goes HD), is moving its noon newscast to 11 am, like WFLA.

This is not a good move, as that means that Live 5 will have the only local noon newscast, and it will hurt 2's ratings. It will help them at 11, against the Price is Right, compared to "Daytime."

WKRG could be tinkering with sports (and their news department) as well. Main anchor Mel Showers reported on Alabama and Auburn tonight while sports director Randy Patrick anchored the morning and noon newscasts.

Of course this could be a temporary thing since Bill Riales and Jennifer Abney have left the station and incoming morning anchor Devon Walsh has not started on the air yet...Could they be testing Randy on the morning show? From the looks of things, she could be doing the shows solo..or with 9am anchor Kesshia Peyton...we'll have to see.

Randy has filled in for Mel Showers anchoring on numerous occasions....it even says so in his bio. Plus, they still have weekend sports anchor Chris Frye.
