Eyewitness News AM Expands to 57

Just in from Nachman.

Eyewitness News This Morning is adding two more hours, from 7 to 9, on CW Philly 57. It's going to be hosted by the existing team from the CBS 3 studios, so Bob Kelly's day just got even more grueling.

The expansion is replacing Wake Up News. Natasha Brown is still going to have a role in the morning as a contributor to the 7-9 show. Sean Murphy will stay as a reporter for KYW/WPSG and Christa Quinn will be a backup weather presenter.

And yes, since they're moving out of the closet known as Traffic.com's studios, the new program will be HD.

I'm wondering what 57's going to do now from 5-7 - Wake Up News goes four hours. Will they just simulcast CBS 3 for those first two?

No. 5 to 7 AM on WPSG will be syndicated programming of some kind, but they are thinking about keeping the news & traffic crawls. Add to the mix: The WPSG broadcast has to go to commercial when it's time for the News Cut-ins during the Early Show on KYW (:25 & :55). Ah, logistics...

Not necessarily. In Orlando, the news cut-ins for the Today Show are simulcasted on WESH (NBC) and WKCF (CW). After the cut-in's weather forecast, WESH goes back to the Today Show (or to a commercial) while WKCF continues on with their regular broadcast.

The way I described above is the way it was presented to the staff today. Granted, it may change.

KYW/WPSG have a retarded master control setup where they can't simultaneously broadcast two live programs out of their studios at the same time which is why they were doing Wake Up News from the traffic.com HQ in the first place.

That's the way it works in Pittsburgh for the KDKA-TV Morning News on Pittsburgh's CW that airs from 7 to 8AM.

That's not the case at all, and you don't know what you are talking about. The current facilities have two studios and two control rooms. If they wanted to do two distinct shows at the same moment, they could.

Understood and I do know that the facility has two studios and two separate master control rooms for each station (toured the place in '07).

Anywho I was told by a collegue of yours that they couldn't produce two live shows at the same time which is why studio B is currently an equipment storage room.

  • 4 weeks later...

Possibly in preparation for the AM expansion, they revised the set backdrop. It's still a skyline, but the skyline shot is much closer in so the buildings look much larger. Kind of like the 1980s WCAU set.

And anything that is kind of like the 80s WCAU set is fine by me.

^ It was just a coincidental, much-needed upgrade (that we've been begging for). The original sheets were pinched by the rollers and the subsequent tears and creases were VERY visible in HD. The Comcast building is now in there, too!

The new show's good. Some features and interviews. There's a single crawl and it shows news, weather, and traffic. As far as the cut-ins on channel 3, they are simulcasting it on both 3 & 57 (ala WESH). They're also using pieces from their old package music and have a new v/o, but when they're going to commercials, they play fun music.
