In the first years of ABC News' well-known "globe" logo, the ABC News white/blue logo (which was a standalone for about 2-3 years, I believe) did not overlap the globe as would be common later, but rather extended only from axis to axis. Why was that?

Because someone in Creative Services said so.

I'd like to know what is meant by that. I appreciate the answer, but I'd like for you to expound upon it.

Probably just an advance in design... someone at ABC decided they should redo the logo and that was what they came up with, or a designer was messing around and came up with the new logo, and it looked better. There are many different possibilities as to why the logo changed.

Definitely just an advance in design... creative services probably also wanted to emphasize the ABC News portion of it rather than the globe.

absolutely an advance in design.

Those mid-1980s ABC News logos and animations were done by Cranston-Csuri, and they probably made the decision to refine the design.
