Portland TV Roundup

Recommended Posts

So, I usually don't post individual posts for everything that happens in Portland because most people probably don't care. But for those that do, here is a roundup of the latest happenings in Portland.

  • KOIN is starting a new 4pm show on Sep. 9th called "Keep it local". It will be hosted by former CBS Anchor/Reporter Priya David.

  • KOIN has hired Araksya Karapetyan to report for the new 4pm show although she is already on air.

  • KOIN's parent company New Vision Television filed for bankruptcy recently.

  • KATU started broadasting in HD. They have few promos on air about it and the only mention of it is in their opens.

  • KATU will be launching neighborhood news blogs in the fall. Not much is known.

  • KGW will launch Estrella TV on channel 8.2 Sep. 7th. They also intend to add 8.3 showing weather, news, and info "as soon as technically possible".

  • KGW will be changing their website platform to Broadcast Interactive Media. KATU also uses their platform.

  • KATU, KOIN and KPTV all have iPhone apps now. KGW does not. There is speculation KGW is waiting until the implement their new web platform before designing an iPhone app.

  • 13 people lost jobs at KPTV/KPDX as Better TV moved production from KPTV to WFSB in Hartford, CT.

  • Chief meteorologist Rod Hill was let go from KATU at the end of June. He has since started his own weather forecasting website http://www.rodhillforecast.com.

  • KGW morning meteorologist Dave Salesky quit at KGW to take the chief meteorologist spot at KATU. Dave will start sometime in Oct/Nov at KATU.

  • KPTV consulting meteorologist Rob Martin will be leaving to take a job in North Dakota. He did the forecasting in the morning for the very popular weather presenter Andy Carson. Rob Martin was scarcely seen on air.

  • KPTV weekend evening weather person Stephanie Ortmann has quit her job. To take her place KPTV has hired Brian MacMillan from KOHD.

  • An episode of the TNT show Leverage was filmed at KGW. The show aired a few weeks ago.

So that's most of the major news of the past month. Enjoy!

Interesting... I wonder if this is the same for all the Belo sites; if so, they must be trimming their web division.

I wonder if they will go with the YouNews option...the other BIM partners (including the MaxMedia Group) use it, though I don't honestly know what the feedback is. We get a decent number of pictures upload at our website, depending on the news and we run promos touting the "citizen journalist" option...
