Between Stephanopoulos and Cuomo to Replace Diane Sawyer

Well, it looks like it's between George Stephanopoulos and Chris Cuomo to replace Diane Sawyer when she moves to World News.

Diane Sawyer's impending departure for ABC's evening news leaves two top contenders for her post at Good Morning America: George Stephanopoulos and Chris Cuomo. Stephanopoulos has the edge, writes Howard Kurtz, because he's got the bigger name and has performed well as host of This Week. But he has one big strike: He's not so good with the light stuff, the bread and butter of morning TV.

Cuomo, meanwhile, is already "comfortable" in the morning ensemble as GMA's news anchor, writes Kurtz at the Washington Post. He does both hard and soft news well and—no small thing—has good rapport with Sawyer's co-host, Robin Roberts. If the network goes with Stephanopoulos, it's possible Cuomo and Roberts will leave, the latter because she won't enjoy watching her new co-host grab all the choice interviews.

I'm not really a fan of either of them for Diane's spot.. Chris never hit me right and George just doesn't make sense with the more upbeat, light morning show. It'll be interesting to see who they pick.

It's a shame that ABC hasn't invested more in building their talent up to "anchor/host" recognition. There are several good anchors who, if ABC had taken the necessary steps to build name recognition, could easily step into the anchor slot. Instead they invested buildingng the names of only three or so of their "stars" (Gibson, Sawyer and Stephenopoulos, primarily, and who already *have* name recognition) at the expense of their bench.

When Gibson takes off from World News they invariably pull Stephenopoulos or Sawyer in to anchor instead of, say, David Muir or Dan Harris, who anchor the weekend shows, or one of the correspondents. Back in the 90s, it wasn't anything to see Forrest Sawyer or Carole Simpson or one of the DC-based correspondents sitting in for Peter at the desk. Roone Arledge's philosophy was to have two or three "stars" but to make damn sure the bench was full of good back-ups to put in at a moments notice.

Now that Gibson is planning his exit and they have decided on Sawyer to fill the spot at World News, ABC finds itself in the position of filling a key spot with someone who already has name recognition (Stephenopoulos and thereby draw his attention away from another key program) or fill it with someone who does an ok job but who - according to reports - isn't that popular with the ABC affiliate board (Cuomo).

  • 5 weeks later...

Chris Cuomo will be leaving his position as news reader on Good Morning America. Juju Chang will replace him, and now it looks like he might be moving to 20/20 to co-anchor alongside Elizabeth Vargas.
