It's always better to jump ship before being forced out. Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/6930-gdc-ep-woolman-leaves-wfld-for-wmaq/ Share on other sites
lazynetjunkie 34
Meh.. The article leaves out more to the story.. All I'll say here is it's just another one of Chicago's "buddy/buddy", "I'll hire you because we're good friends and go drinking often" deals. Someone tell me when/where Woolman was successful as an executive producer?? It's crap like this that's going to keep sinking ships or holding down stations in this market.. Jase 1047
WMAQ has been the most complacent tv station in town for years. Never making any real moves to go after WLS and does just enough to stay ahead of WBBM (most of the time). Regardless of the circumstances, Woolman working there will neither help or hurt them. It's all about the bottom-line. As long as they're profitable as a station, they're happy. Once the Comcast/NBC Universal deal goes through, it will be interesting to see what will happen at the local level. As long as Woolman just sits quietly, doesn't touch anything, and is not put on the spot, things should remain the same. I've already heard some of the numerous changes NBC has in plan on for its O&O's.. I can't mention them here but I know it's stuff that would make almost all the news junkies around here pretty mad. It would really be taking away the identity of their stations and I don't mean graphic/music standardization.. If this means weather reports via the 'Weather Channel' and/or sports from Comcast SportsNet, I can live with that. Heck, I wouldn't care if they started calling themselves 'NBC Chicago News' either. It would really be taking away the identity of their stations and I don't mean graphic/music standardization.. They're renaming all of the stations "NBC", aren't they? I'm noticing some of the signs on air. They've axed all of their local-level creative services departments, save for the ones that produce advertising for clients or produce programming for the station. (10's one of the ones that kept theirs, but only for that purpose.) The daytime lineups, while almost entirely syndicated, are being promoted as "NBC" programs. Half of the time you don't see the local logo. If they do indeed go the ITV or CTV route it would set a dangerous precedent, worse than things like hubbing graphics or changing station formats ala WPIX. This would literally destroy the little local identity the NBC O&Os have left. lazynetjunkie 34
They're renaming all of the stations "NBC", aren't they? Yes.. And many inside the stations (even management) aren't a big fan of it. They're going the direction of just "NBC" period. No "NBC 5", no "NBC Chicago".. Just "NBC". Local programs, syndicated, etc. are all just going to be "NBC" programs. However, most of WMAQ's generic news promos lately have been labeled as "NBC Chicago News", not "NBC 5 News". Maybe they're keeping the city name for the newscasts only? Other than that, the station itself will just be branded as NBC. I think it's not being pushed out fast because they wanna see what Comcast has in plans first for the O&O's since these plans were in the works before Comcast was even in the picture..
