The fall from grace continues: KIMO (Anchorage) is now KYUR

After 40 years, Anchorage ABC affiliate KIMO-13 has changed their call letters to KYUR, making things worse for the once-dominant station.

Why is that, you ask? Well, it all began when Smith Media sold ABC Alaska's Superstation to new owners last year and letting go of Ty Hardt after nine years as anchor/news director. To cut a long story short, they've really dumbed things down in later months!

Another thing is that KYUR's newscasts have a habit of running a few minutes longer as this video explains: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5lZyDUJy5s At least all the other stations, including of course KTUU, always manage to start and end their news on time!!

"Your Alaska Link" (formerly ABC Alaska News) has always been a turn-off, though the rest of ABC's lineup seems to be alright.

I should point out that during the '70s to mid-'80s, KIMO used to be the #1 station in Alaska for news. The fall from grace began in 1985 when reporter Maria Downey left for KTUU, with John Tracy joining her around the same time. Together with the help of NBC's soaring ratings -- largely thanks in part to some fellow named Bill Cosby -- KTUU went from last place to top of the heap almost immediately; they're still #1 25 years later.
