WJAR Launches HD News

WJAR is launching high definition news from a new set at 6:30 AM this morning, making them the first in Providence to do so.

Providence is currently the largest market with no widescreen or HD news, but that all changes this morning.

Yesterday's 11 PM newscast featured SD studio shots from the temporary studio, but the reports were in widescreen SD. All graphics besides the opens were in HD.

Weather was also done in HD with new graphics. The new chroma wall seems to be quite large and also includes a floor component, so the meteorologist can stand on the graphics.

This morning's newscast will be an hour and a half on the old set leading up to the big switch to the new set, with the anchor walking on and unveiling it at the top of the 6:30 half hour.

HD is long overdue here in Providence, so it's great to finally see it.

WPRI/WNAC plans to launch Full HD (including field acquisition) this fall, while WLNE will probably flip the switch sometime in the fall (of 2035).

Saw the the set online at Noon & 6, and the desk is L-shaped, and the newsroom is darker. The weather center (which was not touched) is hidden to the left of the set. For one anchor shows, the main anchor sits on the left with the screens behind them, two main anchors shows, they sit with the newsroom behind them. On their facebook page, most people like the set, but they prefer the anchor with the newsroom behind them. Set was built by FX Group (just kidding ;)), it was built in-house by set designer Wally Franco.

Looks like they tried to do a local version of the network set at 30 Rock. Not bad for an in-house effort, really!
