Question for the group .. dealing with big 3 net affils dropping national news

Today i saw an advertizment for the BIG TEN TOURNAMENT Game between Michigan State and Wisconnsin, now here is how it went

 

"we have the SPARTANS vs WISCONNISN in the Big Ten Tournament, tonight LIVE on ABC53, tonight at 6:30, right after ABC53 News Express at 6 and HONDOs Highlites at 6:15"

 

Question, have YOUR 3 network affiliates ever dropped a big natioanl newscast ..for a basketball game??? (note I said SPORTS, not infomercials)

Not that I'm aware of. The 'big three' affiliates here only carry sports on a very occasional basis, and when it does happen, it usually either starts early in the day, or well after the 5:30 start time of the national news.

 

WISN (ABC) usually only picks up the ESPN broadcast of MNF when the Packers are playing.

WTMJ (NBC) only carries pre-season Packers games, and those are either way before or after the national news.

WDJT (CBS) doesn't usually carry any local sports - they usually broadcast those on their sister station, WMLW.

WITI (FOX) used to carry pre-season Packers games, but those moved to WTMJ a year ago.

 

(Bucks and Brewers are Fox Sports Net exclusives; Wave is only telecast on a tape delay on Time Warner Sports; Marquette BBall is either on WMLW or nationally telecast, as is Badgers BBall. UW-Milwaukee are only telecast when national.)

this happens a lot on the west coast. i remember when elizabeth vargas and bob woodruff started on world news tonight last year, we didnt see it in seattle until like 3 days later because of basketball or football or something.

Nope. But here in Memphis, it's a unique situation. The NBC affiliate does not broadcast college B-ball (but they do show Grizzlies games, but they've never bumped NBC Nightly News for it). The CBS affiliate only airs games that come from the network and the Fox O&O does not broadcast any kind of basketball. The ABC affiliate only shows basketball that comes from the network. All tournament ball is shown on the CW affiliate, and they have no national newscast, so that's that.

In Green Bay our NBC affiliate had same game (Spartans vs. Wisconsin) on, I think it would of been on their sister station WACY but they had high school basketball on at the same time.

All pre-emptions are subject to each station's affiliate agreement. Each station is allowed a limited number of pre-emptions in a schedule year (subject to approval by the network)

 

When it comes to sports, more often than not, it is the network making the program substitution offering sports in place of their nightly news program. Rest assured, any pre-emption is made as a revenue decision, as in "will the station make more money?"

One example is in Sacramento, where the ABC station there, KXTV, carries the Sacramento Kings, the town's NBA team. In addition to the few appearance of the Kings on the main network, KXTV carries 25 Kings games a year, but they're mostly either early-evenings (the East Coast road games) or weekends, so they won't really hit the prime-time bottom line.
