  1. Since CBS is taking their local news channels to the digital realm, the opportunity for viewership is much greater than if it was just a TV station. Many of the viewers are probably going to be coming this way, and because of their investment in this, it makes sense to put it on TV as a side-effect...to provide a valuable service once and for all for the long-beleaguered "CBS Detroit" Basically, any TV viewership is likely going to be eclipsed by "impressions" or hits on the digital side of things.

  2. It's news. It's about TV. It's relevant. You're fine! We were just discussing the Late Late Show ending over the weekend after all...

  3. That’s a really good point; CBS does provide the best/easiest way to access their local newscasts digitally, especially compared to the other stations in the market. I wish ratings companies would take digital impressions into account; viewers are viewers at the end of the day, and it shouldn’t matter where they’re watching.

  4. What's that song? Na, na, na, na, na, na, hey, hey, hey ... goodbye! I love the creativity of the competitive marketplace. I love that we are a country where people like Henry Ford and Steve Jobs could create something out of nothing. That's not what these clowns are doing. They're taking somebody else's creation to starve it of money and then leave it broken and in a ditch on the side of the road. Sorry for the mixed metaphors. Not that I like government any better than these clowns, but in this case they are doing the right thing. Bye-bye Sue kim. I hope this folly cost you hundreds of millions of dollars.

  5. It’s all good. Can’t say what the exact numbers are, but again, I’m going by what I was told from someone who actually works there and is a well known on the air personality. The fact that they expanded so quickly is what’s most surprising, especially to the local competitors. This isn’t even all that I’ve heard but from the looks of it, CBS is heavily invested in Detroit news. Agreed!!!

  6. I don’t mean to sound like a jerk, but the station is not going to tell you or me if the ratings are not what they want it to be. As far as having a “great product”…I guess it’s good for what it is, and I’m glad CBS is finally making an effort after decades of nothing, but let’s not pretend they’re surging in the ratings if we don’t know the full extent of their ratings growth. That said, they expanded their newscasts quickly despite a delayed launch, and if they are seeing consistent and significant improvement, good for them.

  8. Recently talked with some with the station and the ratings for WWJ are improving each week. Though it’s obviously in 4th place, the fact that ratings are growing each week and growing this fast is a great sign for things to come. This is what happens when you have a great product on the air. Keep up the good work, CBS News Detroit.

  9. I'm taking it upon myself to create the forum's official thread for discussion of the programming decisions affected by the 2023 Writers Strike, whether it be a few days or a few months. As expected, all late night shows will be airing reruns for an indefinite period of time, whether or not they can soon return without writers like in 2008 remains to be seen. https://deadline.com/2023/05/writers-strike-late-night-shows-to-shut-down-immediately-1235352054/ And in a move that was probably in the works before the strike, Dancing With the Stars is returning to ABC. https://deadline.com/2023/05/dancing-with-the-stars-moving-back-to-abc-1235353662/

  10. I forget that Gutfeld even exists. Turned it on for 20 seconds. Tattooed, backwards hat guy, draped in a wrestling belt: "Jill Biden isn't a real doctor," because she can't do surgery, or whatever shit. Annnnnnnd, pass.

  11. He doesn't have any real broad-based appeal. Those that like him are already watching him so he is largely irrelevant. Now If we were talking about a personality like Joe Rogan, then that would be a different story. I could see this strike lasting a while (maybe early/mid August) given the timing. If it started, say, at the beginning of the tv season, there may have been heavy pressure to reach a deal. My guess is that tv executives will drag their feet on this as long as they can.

  14. WSAZ debuted a new logo for their "First Warning Weather" branding today. This is the first major change to the design, as they have just altered their previous logo throughout the years. This is definitely different, not sure what to think of it, what's everyone's thoughts?

  16. Sinclair is a unique situation, considering Diamond Sports’s bankruptcy (largely resulting from the loss of vMVPD carriage in concurrence with the acceleration of cord-cutting following its purchase of the group from Disney, though some appear to blame the absence of sports events on the then-Fox Sports regional networks in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, though it’s possible both can be factors) may be impacting the company’s bottom line. Sinclair has also had debt issues for decades, and nearly went bankrupt at least once before; the Bally Sports mess, buttressed by its boatload of station acquisitions during the 2010s as its was getting out of financial trouble, only put them back into that situation. In hindsight, it seemed difficult for a family-owned station group to maintain the diverse portfolio it has with such a large number of stations, and not run into financial difficulties. That’s why most family-owned broadcasters only run 10 or fewer stations, and a handful of miscellaneous properties (take Griffin Media for example, which in addition to owning KWTV/KSBI and KOTV/KQCW [both of which have Sinclair stations as competitors], also runs an outdoor advertising business [technically two subunits serving its two main markets, which are branded after its respective CBS stations in Oklahoma City and Tulsa], a cluster of radio stations in Tulsa, and a statewide news-based radio syndication network). Most successful family-owned broadcasters that still exist (like the Griffins) know that they must keep their portfolios manageable to maintain stewardship long-term, something the Smiths chose not to do.

  17. KOMO 4 News Nightcast Saturday, only 15 minutes long, 8/2/1986. Ted Warren and Rick Meeder. Also, a KTNV News 13 (Las Vegas) open at the end of this clip, from Martin Luther King Day 1987.

  19. Also don't forget that the Suns/Mercury had to go through an acrimonious ownership change this winter, so there may have been a nullification clause that Mat Ishiba exercised to build overall market goodwill; before Bally, the Suns had been associated with Fox (including their UPN/MNTV station, KUTP) for years, and they were likely unhappy that their viewership didn't have any increase (and BSA lost carriage) even after a Finals run under new management.

  23. It intrigues me that as late as 1985, WMAQ was still using news opens from the late NewsCenter 5 era (which ended in 1982), with "Channel 5 News" awkwardly overlaid on top of the original "NewsCenter 5" title:

  30. Name one...the UK's reigning monarch or prime minister? The present dictator of North Korea? The present dictators...er, democratically-elected presidents of Russia and China? The president of Ukraine, who is an international hero? American media, in its very parochial worldview, doesn't spend a great deal of time covering other individuals and entities outside of those whom I mentioned above. Maybe the PM of Canada gets coverage every now and then, the president of Mexico even less. The former president of Brasil, who styled himself after the Great Orange Stain, was lucky to get any airtime up here. I also doubt that most of the target demo for any of the late night shows get their news from non-U.S. sources like CBC, BBC, Deutsche Welle, Al Jazeera or Reuters, or even the extreme left-wing Democracy Now! So, Orange Man it is until he goes away completely. (But the public disappearance of Melania, former First Lady of the Night, should be mined to the fullest.)
