  1. Several CBS stations—most of them O&Os (e.g., WCBS, KCBS, WFOR, KDKA, WBBM), but also about a dozen affiliates (e.g., KOIN, WKMG, WANF [then WGCL], WANE, WCSC)—actually ran Guiding Light in the 10:00/9:00 a.m. hour during the last few years of its run, with LMAD inheriting GL’s alternate timeslots.

  2. Am I missing something? This isn't a long-term problem. CBS has a plan for the 12:30A slot, but those plans are temporarily on hold due to strikes. So I do not understand why returning time to the affiliates is even being mentioned. As for a comparison to 1984, that isn't exactly comparing apples to apples. There were three commercial networks and PBS. So to compare almost 40-year-old programming choices doesn't seem relevant. But that's just my thinking. Technically, CBS still does. Let's Make a Deal runs at 10A Eastern. However, some affiliates have chosen to air it later in the day

  3. If I were in charge of an ABC station and it was getting MNF back even for a season, heck yes, I'd be happy. It's a heck of a lot more sellable as an established brand to my local clients than some of the other programming. Is it as good as SNF in terms of matchups? Of course not. But while I'm still saddled with the Bachelor and Dancing with the Stars et al, a primetime marquee sports franchise back on my air, temporary or otherwise, is a win. Meh, times change, circumstances change and the world doesn't stay frozen in 1984.

  4. Johnny Carson and Tom Snyder are spinning in their graves right now. Putting Byron Allen on CBS is like giving up Saturday Morning TV to Litton.

  6. You are right. They have a choice of 10am or 3pm. 10am is the recommended time slot. However they technically didn’t program 10am-11am from 1992 when the Family Feud Challenge was cancelled until 2009 when LMAD replaced Guiding Light. (Except for the few affiliates that aired Guiding Light at 10am, CBS even started feeding GL at 10am). Many affiliates including WBTV didn’t clear that though I should have said they used to program BOTH 10am-11am and 3-4pm and now they get to pick one of those hours. Until 1986 they also programmed 4-4:30pm. I am not sure if WBTV cleared what they aired in that time slot although they did briefly clear Tattletales at 1pm on a delay.

  7. And there was a plethora of amazing entertainment at 12:30 am? They don't need to give the time back at this point. Whatever strike filler there is, it's not really a big deal. The networks have given plenty of time over the years, and they're also in business to make money as a network. It's 2023 and the business models need to reflect that reality. What was that, All in the Family reruns?

  8. CBS also programmed 10-11am ET, but the programming was better.

  9. At least back in 1984, CBS affiliates had that time slot to themselves. So many crap shows are on the air simply because the networks won't return time to their affiliates.

  10. Vanna White is staying on with Wheel of Fortune as cohost for the next two seasons (through the 43rd [2025-26]), along with a sweet pay raise. https://deadline.com/2023/09/vanna-white-wheel-of-fortune-new-deal-season-41-pat-sajak-1235550608/

  12. Regarding the WLBT logo, I noticed the arm of the “3” was shortened to match the weight of the callsign font. Ironically, the revised design otherwise is closer to the original 1985–2009 layout (the version used with the standardized Raycom/Gray packages from 2009 until the GrayONE debut had the middle leg extending slightly closer to the top of the “3”’s open loop). The WIS logo is decent; the kerning of the call letters could have been spaced a little closer than it is, and the “I” and “S” made a bit thicker, so it fully matches the weight of the “W” (it can be hard to tell if the weights of all three letters match in certain depictions).

  13. Another day, another lawsuit: https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article279512624.html A former multimedia sports journalist for KCTV5 has filed a federal lawsuit against the news station’s parent company, claiming he was discriminated against due to his race. Adam Orduna of Overland Park filed the lawsuit Monday in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kansas, against Gray Media Group Inc., which does business in Kansas City as KCTV5. Orduna is the third KCTV5 journalist to file a discrimination lawsuit against the television company in the last four months.

  14. That would be absurd. Disney is not just going to sell ABC without ESPN. Because a big chunk of ABC’s ratings are tied to ESPN and the sports department runs as one joint unit, it would be impossible to sell to Allen in this sense without causing a mass disruption of the sports media market. The most ideal situation for ABC and ESPN would be Hearst teaming with Berkshire Hathaway (just like the latter funded Capital Cities’ purchase of ABC long ago) to buy the networks and perhaps National Geographic which could be collapsed into the A&E Networks structure. I would however consider Freeform instead of FX though - since FX is still in form a Fox network at heart airing Fox repeats, even if they are no longer a News Corporation Fox entity. All that Hearst can then do is turn its ABC affiliates into O&Os along with WBAL in Baltimore (which Hearst has owned from day one in 1948), and sell most of the rest of its stations to Scripps. It’s not that Byron Allen isn’t capable of pulling off a big acquisition, but to me him acquiring a significant share of Gray and playing a key cog in further investing into the Atlanta media scene where the likes of Tyler Perry and Steve Harvey have had a sizable presence (and Allen already has links to CBS via TWC and NBC dating back to his days with Real People) would make more sense. Atlanta is already home to TWC as well and has been since day one.
