1. Those are the "seven cities" that make up Hampton Roads. All of the stations gradually added more cities to their legal ID in the 90s and into the early 2000s for some reason.
2. That’s Ignitor open #2 ca. 2000. That one was in between the open I posted above and the one I’m using as my avatar. http://vartv.com/gallery.htm has a few Richmond opens including WTVR from 1993 and 1998.
3. Consider that open discovered!
4.
Also I’m trying to decide on what to do for a Virginia compilation - should I do Richmond or Norfolk? Or both? I really love both markets and have been there too. And speaking of VA, that WDBJ open has seen YT before: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQZ2SPTtkTE I posted that clip back in February and @ChesapeakeTV called it one of the worst depictions of VA he’s ever seen.
WAVY has a fairly complete open history on YouTube going back to 1980... just missing the daytime Wall to Wall opens. WVEC’s is somewhat complete going back to the early 80s. WTKR has holes in the 80s and an “undiscovered” open used in 1998/99 when they first switched to Ignitor. Feel free to reach out if you need help compiling these. That WDBJ open may be a terrible depiction of the Commonwealth, but I’d definitely place it in the top 10 Virginia news opens! A classic for sure.
5. WDBJ 11pm open from February 1994:
6. Cutting-edge stuff for ‘88. Definitely set the tone for the early-mid 1990s.
7. Here’s a bit of WTKR on the derailment of the Norfolk & Western 611 in the Great Dismal Swamp in May 18, 1986. Anchors Betty Francis and Ross MacCallum. No open or music or anything on this clip, unfortunately. Would love to see more of WTKR during this period... this was months before going to the “Discover the Land of the 3” look.
8. True... KFMB's slogan was "Right Here, Right Now" when they were using Impact.
9. We had this gem
10. That's good... I like the Jammin' crew and I know they'll do a great job keeping it local.
11. It's the reincarnation of 7 Too!
12. I sure wish I could see the first-gen (~1992) News Series 2000+ opens again. phillyvideofan had it up years ago before his channel was suspended.
13. My favorite thing about this? CounterForce 40! Not sure what it's supposed to mean but I like it
14. One of the dishes on the STL tower had the NBC snake logo on it... I wonder if that was saved.
15. WDIV's AM news open from 2003(?) with the morning theme of Local First News
16. WECT quietly changed the branding of its newscasts on WSFX as of Monday, June 25. They’re now known as “WECT News on Fox Wilmington” They’re using WECT’s version of the Raycom graphics and the WECT peacock duratran. Aerial remains as the music package.
17. Although it's already "discovered"... I'm pulling up the Otis Conner WROC/WXII theme again. Listen closely to the melody in the background of this WXII promo from 1988... This was during the era they were using the "remixed" Wall to Wall arranged by Conner, but that's definitely the exact same melody as that's regarded as separate. Could it be the same package, or is it more likely that Conner was recycling the melody for the "Wall to Wall remix" now that we know the "WROC theme" existed in 1987 (KOB)? Is there more to the story about the WXII/WYFF remix?
18. Came here to post this... you beat me to it, haha! Early usage of Right Here, Right Now for sure... I wonder if it began in late 2000? Any Charlotteans have any insight? They were certainly using the more subdued cuts than the era with the powerful opens voiced by Charlie Van Dyke that are on the NMSA (used presumably after this)
19. Indeed it was!
20. 1984 would sound right. This must have been used for only a couple years, and then “Turn To” and “Spirit of Hampton Roads” must have come out in 85. I think this new unknown theme is related to their “For People Like You” campaign of the time. The KHOU/WISH Corinthian theme was still being used in 1984 after the Belo purchase, as evidenced here at the end... Joe Foulkes was actually chief weathercaster... no meteorology degree there. The Daily Press covers the Virginia Peninsula, which is Newport News, Hampton, Williamsburg. The Virginian-Pilot covers Norfolk, Va Beach, etc. Now Tronc owns both of them so they’re one step closer to merging into a regional super-paper
21. These are derived from WRAL’s graphics that came out eons ago and eventually updated & used until 2016. I forget who did them... I think it was Hothaus or GO
22. Didn't share this news on here when it first happened, but George Elliott, former meteorologist for WECT, feature reporter for WWAY, and OCM for The Weather Channel in the 1980's is back in the hospital with an infection from the injuries he suffered after being hit by a truck on his bicycle last month. http://www.wect.com/story/38433066/former-wect-meteorologist-george-elliott-back-in-the-hospital Wilmington Police are still looking for the hit-and-run suspect.
23. Rare commercial clips from WITN in 1997: Includes promos for weathercaster Steve Hawley at 3:11 and sports with Trey Jones at 12:46. They were using that same "Business Break" graphic with Network Music's "Bright Expectations" .
24. The ice machine is located in a public event space in the new building. The local chamber of commerce is hosting an event there later this month, and the station is supposed to be hosting a public open house at an unannounced date.
25. A small fire caused by an ice machine evacuated WWAY for over an hour Thursday night after their 7:30pm newscast ended. https://www.wwaytv3.com/2018/06/07/video-small-fire-leads-to-evacuation-at-wway-new-studio/ They’ve been in their new building for about two months.
