  1. I'm not convinced the FTVLIve story is accurate, simply because I can't imagine anyone high up in the company would have allowed WKYC's blanket rebrand to go through were that the case.

If not, THE most-watched FOX affiliate in the country. I think WSVN regularly pulls in 300,000+ viewers for their news at 10pm (I saw that number years ago but not sure of 2019 numbers tho).

KTVU may want to have a word re: the ratings, but that aside, SVN definitely ranks up there and absolutely is the model almost everything we know about FOX today is based off of - from FOX News Channel, to sports, to a lot of the older O&Os even. You could even say that about HDH to an extent--and they're still pulling in great numbers in Boston without a network affiliation.

I suspect the Ansin family will sell when Ed dies and it will be to FOX - both in Miami and Boston. Would be really interesting to see if they're handled with kid gloves as an O&O.

  3. Does the left bar show drive times or traffic information in the morning? That's something where it would be extremely useful to have in a prominent, constant spot in the morning.

Other than that - I'm willing to give it a "first day" pass, but they don't have much time to figure this out.

It debuts Sunday at 11pm from what I hear - but here is a story from their website.

    https://www.wkyc.com/mobile/article/about-us/the-new-3-news-more-of-what-you-love/95-4da0085b-feb2-433b-a62b-becba28fa774

From the looks of those promos, it looks like they used their quota of stock video from iStock...and then some.  Champaign bottles and shopping bags...something “marvelous” is coming.  Ok, then 😬

If you look further down in the article, there's a video embed that essentially details the mission statement of each of the new shows with talent included.

The messaging is definitely MUCH stronger on those spots--I get a real CCO vibe from them.

I get the sense they want to try and give all the dayparts a feel and personality akin to KUSA's Next--appropriate to each timeslot.

That's probably not going to work because as excellent a show as it is, Next is still personality driven and it's not as simple as taking that format to other markets...but logo aside, I kinda hope it does?

  5. You know what it reminds me of?

And that was the channel's best era.

As much as I want WKYC to open up that huge newsroom and do a similar style show, it's Tegna, so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  6. A real shame KOIN dropped The Unexpected—they commissioned some really nice updates to that package.

That aside, I’m not as thrilled with the graphics as others here, but it works well as a non-network branded package, much like the “ABC” Nexstar package.

  7. On a more serious note - likely the only reason it's GMA-branded is because ABC sees some value in the brand now, given the parent program's #1 rating in HHs during the morning--and their recent demo wins.

I like the Crew name too, but this looks like ABC trying to build GMA into a more fluid, all-hours brand like Today.

  8. The 10PM news on PHL 17 just crashed into commercial - video wall wasn't working and they cut everything to black a few seconds after...

--They came back like nothing happened. 😬 Though the wall is from a different daypart and not moving. Was hoping they had a textured blue background on standby like WLS!

Looks like we just got our first glimpse of the new CBS Evening News set in Washington DC:

I always suspected it would be the FTN set - barring staffing it makes you wonder why they didn't launch right from DC out of the gate.

    It's been a week.

Given the short tenure of Jeff Glor vs. the expectations set for Norah, months and even weeks do matter here.

That doesn't make sense. WDAY and WDAZ are available to anyone for free if you have an antenna, so why would you move content behind a paywall?

More and more companies are producing web-exclusive content. There are less and less sources of ad revenue online unless you want to become a video portal, which I suspect a market like Fargo can't support.

Forum wants to be paid for the content they create, and I can't totally blame them. I think you'll see a point soon where some of the online-only newscasts become paywall'd--and so many are now used to receiving content for free that it's going to be a PAINFUL adjustment on both ends. The ones that are providing free content are hanging on by a thread. There will need to be a way to directly monetize it all, or you'll soon see no content of value at all on the Internet.

The letter in the FTVLive piece tells me Scott may have jumped the gun on the TV website itself being paywall'd (guessing it'll be INFORUM.com first), but if they indeed go through with it, it'll be a noble, if not necessary experiment to see if some of these small market stations not owned by Sinclair or Nexstar can stay afloat.

Also, FOX O&Os will be the new home for Weigel's "DECADES" this coming fall.

    https://deadline.com/2019/07/fox-television-stations-weigel-broadcasting-decades-television-network-1202644017/

It's a great subnet - but it heavily relied on the CBS library for content, and even though the release indicates they'll still air programming from that library, I do wonder if that'll change--or we'll see more classic 20th Century FOX programming in the mix.  Probably overthinking since Disney owns a lot of that library now though.

Hypothetical question:  If Sinclair were to end up losing their station licenses, would it be a 22-year court battle like RKO General was?

I mean, we don't know if the industry will even be around in 2041..

TV will absolutely be around in 2041. Whether it will be a zombie industry like radio is another question.

I think the length of a court battle largely depends on whose administration is in office when this all comes to a head. If Trump gets another four years and it's his FCC again, Sinclair probably gets away with murder. If it's, say, a type like Sanders or Warren, I could honestly see Sinclair just packing up shop. Anything in between probably gets murky.
