  1. Ratings for the Evening News *were* up under Scott's tenure as anchor, but the gains were molehills compared to the mountain needed.

And, unfortunately, Charlie was a draw and his departure has killed CTM.

It's good that there's new blood behind the scenes, but I'm concerned everyone looking for the Murrow / Cronkite days to be rebuilt are going to be sorely disappointed. I've already seem some cracks in the "Real News" brand with the recent R. Kelly interview (and their subsequent milking of it) and the Royals special. Considering either of those would have been unfathomable inside those halls 10 years ago.

I have made a demo reel featuring some news opens (I believe) to be designed by some unknown graphics company from the mid 1990s. I’ve been researching about this company’s whereabouts for years and haven’t found any luck.

It wouldn't be TVbD would it?

  3. 21 minutes ago, Eat News said:

I expect the FCC lawyers and the Sinclair lawyers to stipulate that Sinclair pays  a reasonable (pre-agreed ) fine ,and promise not to do it again.

    And that's all.

    No drama...no nothing.

Just a fine...and everyone moves on.

    Seriously folks...

Where are the "victims" in this dastardly affair?

It's big business, and that's the price you pay when you play with real money ...in the real world.

Depending on who's elected to the executive branch in 2020 - and if this in fact stretches that long - I think much more serious consequences are still in play.

  4. Well, Ryan Kadro's done.

You can believe what you want about the circumstances of the departure, whether Charlie Rose's exit irreversibly hurt the show's chances, etc. But if that's not a signal of significant change to come, I don't know what is.

  5. I'm a little shocked Turner was so willing to give up the CourtTV IP. There absolutely is a market for this kind of stuff and it's a bit puzzling Turner didn't try again with the brand through a rebrand of HLN.

Given the demos this type of programming typically attracts, it's also a bit of a surprise Katz partnered with Trib/Nexstar in the top markets, when the ABC O&Os probably would have been a more powerful fit.

  6. It is not today. It is November 17. Not to mention the video says 1969.

This original video was produced in '69, but the format definitely launched in '68.

I'm guessing WABC isn't accounting for leap years, which absent those would make the launch today.

This is an amazing BTS video - props to WABC for acknowledging their history, a practice damn few TV stations do these days.

  7. Or at least put GDS on CBS13 at 4:30-7am and CW31 7-10am. Remember, it still does second place compared to KCRA.

It probably wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to make Good Day 4-10AM and simulcast the first half on KOVR.

Are the current two shows that distinctly different to where sales can justify two different revenue streams from clients targeting (I assume) two different sets of demos?

At worst, it's an awkward lead-in to CBS This Morning?

  8. If that was a proven fact...

Every station would just go news 24/7 during elex cycles.

We're damn close in some markets...

But you are right about the ebb and flow of political money. How often have we seen layoffs at stations and station groups (not just Scripps mind) in off-cycle years?

You'd hope the ad rates being on the lowest rung of the card would stave off that kind of policy. But the season is still huge. I wonder how long it is before candidates realize you basically need a Twitter account and targeted ads on social media to be successful without blowing campaign contribution dollars - it could well put local TV in trouble.

  9. These graphics look like they're all in-house.

I mean, I’d hope so—their corporate HQ / hub is based in Baltimore, correct? I don’t think Sinclair’s gone out of house for GFX ever - at least not since the News Central days.

To the topic at hand: it’s definitely a step up from the 3D logos floating in space, and the logo animation in particular is very nice, but there isn’t a ton of motion to give that open that feeling of grandeur.

  10. A lot of these concepts and new ideas have captured the audiences they were intended to (young people). TEGNA's new graphics and music packages have outperformed the previous, and KUSA's "Next with Kyle Clark" is now the top rated newscast in all of Denver in any time period. So, yes, these are different ways of doing the news, but they're working.

I may have said this here before, but I firmly, truly believe that if TEGNA's smart, they will roll out a Next clone in every market they own a television station.

Copy the format and get personable, young-ish talent to man it. There's no need to reinvent news on broadcast TV when they already have that successful formula.

    Seriously. Just...do that!

  11. 4pm news returning to CBS3. Staffing from within. Their product is already not that great, and now they’re expanding it?!

    http://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2018/7/26/adding-more-news-in-philly

I assume Dr. Phil moves to 3pm, and Family Feud moves to 57 or off the schedule.

That's weird--I know the good doctor is a bright point in their afternoon schedule, but I was under the impression the Feud was also performing respectably.

A piece of me thinks they should move it to 7 and banish Inside Edition.

  12. IIRC the Mendte / Lane era propelled KYW to a competitive 2nd in the evening. This was also around the time Zucker was running NBC pre-Comcast (the "NBC 2.0" era) which trickled to the O&Os, hurting WCAU.

KYW had a LONG way to climb from where it was prior to Mendte, but I do wonder how they would have fared had that not happened, and the team as assembled was still there.

  13. It will be interesting to see if Nexstar is hostily acquired much like Media General was hostily acquired by Nexstar....

Given Nexstar's debt load, this could be a bigger disaster in the making....

    Funny you mention that!

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-nexstar-m-a-apolloglobal-exclusive/exclusive-apollo-approaches-tv-stations-owner-nexstar-about-acquisition-sources-idUSKBN1K120L

(Reuters) - Buyout firm Apollo Global Management LLC (APO.N) has approached Nexstar Media Group Inc (NXST.O), an operator of television stations that reach nearly 40 percent of U.S. households, to express interest in acquiring it, according to people familiar with the matter.

The approach comes a year after Nexstar’s $2.3 billion acquisition of peer Media General Inc turned it into one of the largest U.S. broadcasters. Nexstar wants to add scale as advertisers move their spending to digital and mobile platforms.

I'm getting some bad Toys R Us vibes from this...
