KCBS 2/KCAL 9 - CBS Los Angeles News Thread
Geoffrey replied to Roadrunner's topic in Los Angeles News
Guys, let's relax. We're allowed to have different opinions on local news branding without getting heated. Please. Anyway, new Sky Cal logo: (edit: just noticed that they're trying to emphasize the K, C, A and L letters with that odd shading) Why does the Coming Up banner have to be so tall? -

Now it says KCAL NEWS / CBS LOS ANGELES. Let's cram a few more brands in that bug? KCAL NEWS / IN-N-OUT BURGER / DISNEYLAND / CBS LOS ANGELES -
I'm sure morale is low so any news of a win can be helpful to the staff. (I love the way the table looks to be that anchor's left shoulder.)

KCBS 2/KCAL 9 - CBS Los Angeles News Thread

I know I keep complaining that the new bug is too big, but look at this. Is it really necessary to scream LOS ANGELES on a bug like that? Imagine if they just used the KCAL NEWS square. Would be a nicer minimalist look. Right now it's just a waste of screen real estate. At least incorporate the time and temperature if it's not going to be elsewhere on the screen. -
KCBS 2/KCAL 9 - CBS Los Angeles News Thread

Rough start in the 4 a.m. hour with lots of technical difficulties. Anchor microphones didn't work, reporter microphones didn't work, they were unable to cut to the weather anchor. Yes, I know it's their first day but not really -- they've been rehearsing for weeks. Good news is that not 4 a.m. isn't the most watched hour. I'm still surprised that they didn't launch new weather graphics yet, and the old full screen was used for traffic. After all this time the graphics were still not ready for launch. I'm not a fan of how they use the same full screen animation for things like Live, Team Coverage, Weather, Traffic, etc. It gets old when the same thing is used every other minute. Otherwise, this is an interesting idea using KCAL News as the overall branding and doing something different in the morning. I've always thought it must be weird for West Coast viewers to get a three-hour-old national news broadcast. We shall see. -
That was when CBS This Morning launched nearly 11 years ago. They slowly moved away from that with more celebrity interviews. I think one reason they relaunched it as "CBS Mornings" was to signal that they were no longer as heavily focused on hard news. It's softer like CBS News Sunday Morning. I'm not a fan. And I still don't understand the purpose of putting them in Times Square if they're not going to use a real window or make use of the location.

I'm interested to see what the new weather graphics will look like when launched.

I'm rather disappointed. Even though I am opposed to the new numberless branding, I expected to like the new graphics. That bug is huge and it looks like a copy and paste of the CBS News streaming package (which is the point, I get it). Didn't think they could do worse than the outgoing O&O package but this feels lifeless to me. I expect a return to numbers within two years.

So sad. He was an excellent reporter. He wasn't seen on air very often because investigative reports take time, but they can get action. I remember when CNN first hired him from KCBS and he occasionally filled in as a weekend anchor.
-
I do see that the gallery description ends with: "Much more to come on this project, stay tuned." It would be nice to see a station roll out all elements of a new graphics package at the same time instead of doing it piecemeal.

Dana anchored last night (Sunday) as well. I liked Dana's and Kristine's interactions tonight. Dana and Dick did the 6.

Very nice tribute! Side note: It amazes me that even people who work in TV sometimes shoot vertical videos with their phones for TV.

At This Hour is still using the old New Day studio (and possibly also so is CNNI's Quest Means Business?), so I don't think that's going to be where CNN This Morning goes. Because the newsroom stopped being used shortly before CNN This Morning premiered, it's my guess that this will be for the mornings. They did have multiple sets built for CNN+ (I believe the temporary CNN This Morning one is one of them) so it's always possible one of those may be reworked
-
I'm curious about what they're doing with the newsroom, and if it's going to be used for CNN This Morning. As previously mentioned, shows that has been using the newsroom are in a temporary set (I think a different corner of the AC360 studio). I haven't liked CNN's newsroom sets in New York, both in the old Time Warner Center location and at the current Hudson Yards space. They look like boring offices with some monitors. I miss the old newsroom at CNN Center, which really felt like it was designed to be used on TV. I think part of the difference is that the New York newsrooms use robotic cameras, which really gives a different feel to the broadcast.

I wonder if there may be more happening behind the scenes for ABC to have taken them off the air after having a few days to look into this last week and over the weekend.

Thanks for sharing! And now HLN is airing Forensic Files at 8 a.m. Not even a replay.
-
That's not what irony is, and Stelter is a student of cable news so he was a perfect person to write about this. And he mentioned that he previously worked at CNN.
-
Former CNN media reporter Brian Stelter writes about the demise of HLN for The Atlantic: https://www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2022/12/hln-network-layoffs-cnn/672332/ The End of Companion Television CNN’s Headline News may seem thoroughly old-fashioned now that it’s dead. But its demise is a reminder of the creeping nature of media obsolescence.
-
Sorry to hear that HLN is essentially gone. I had hope when they brought back the "Headline News" in the bug but it stopped being a destination for news. I see they're doing this weird thing with Tuesdays again. CNN This Morning debuted on a Tuesday. Now Tuesday, December 6th is when HLN will stop producing live programming. I'm probably way off but I wonder if it is a way to give Robin and the team a proper sendoff, as Robin was not in this morning (and presumably out for the week). Simulcasting CNN This Morning is an odd choice, unless there was going to be some Headline News-style ticker providing some sort of variation. Also sorry for all of the people who were laid off, most of whom are names we would not recognize. I have a feeling that contributors such as Susan Glasser and Jonathan Martin may still pop up, but not as often and will no longer be exclusive to CNN.

Why are Drew Barrymore and Dr. Phil involved in a promo about local news?
-
I know they're public figures but that story and those photos feel incredibly creepy.
-
I was trying to figure that out, too. At first I thought they wanted us to believe that Norah and company would be hanging out in there. But I have a feeling it will show results. I guess if NBC and Fox News can make it look like they are projecting election results on their NYC buildings, CBS has to, too.
-
I feel like I'm back in 1999 when The Early Show started putting their logo in unrealistic places by their Fifth Avenue cameras.
-
I'm fine with it. The pandemic accelerated a lot of changes. Ties feel excessively formal and stuffy.

This is the same outlet that made it seem like Norah O'Donnell was on her way out at CBS, before she wasn't. It seems like this may be based on a single source, described as an "insider," but that doesn't even necessarily mean this person works there. I don't even see this "insider" describing a situation they witnessed or citing a person he or she heard this from. The Post has a political axe to grind and this story is perfect for them. Take any Post gossip with a spoonful of salt.
