Bozo the Clown can't even save this channel... ...unless we see where he really stands on the issues.... If Krusty the Klown was a republican.... -

...Or Nexstar is trying to kill off the network. After her disastrous stint on Megyn Kelly Today, all she has to do is say the wrong thing, and she can be the scapegoat...er...savior and WGN America will be back so fast, Bozo the Clown and Matlock reruns won't know what to do with themselves.... -
Man, that's sad. Jon Loufman is a fixture of Cleveland TV. I think he's been on every station (starting as a fill-in meteorologist) before getting permanent roles on WKYC and WOIO. He just comes off as a likeable person, so what's not to love about him?
-
Well, I guess recycling a graphics package from Richmond is better than having a station from Richmond produce your newscasts. (like WTVR did for WDCW under Tribune)... Still, shouldn't something in the nation's capitol be a little more original? But then again, this is Nexstar we're talking about.....

WTOK (and the Meridian, MS market) is finally getting a midday newscast! Their only competition is WMDN/WGBC which only puts out a 6 and 10pm newscast, as well as a 9pm on WGBC's Fox station. All former Waypoint stations, so these are produced from afar. At least Coastal Television hasn't put their mark on these stations....yet.

NewsNation The Turmoil Saga of NewsNation

Sooner or later, the golden goose of trying to make something out of WGN America is going to dry up. Once the OTT providers start dropping it, it's toast. Even worse is when a network that is FREE over the internet and gets roughly twice the viewers as NN (NewsMax)... I'd be shocked if Nexstar succeeds in getting the CW and trying to put NN's content there....then again, no I wouldn't. I'd be curious to see how the WFLANow content does. It does a much better job of covering the news than NewsNation does....sort of a low-budget HLN before they became the "murder porn" channel and home of endless Forensic Files marathons.... -

I see that WKYC finally came to their senses and brought back "news" on Saturday nights at 11pm. How long did the "Mike Polk Experiment" last before getting changed?- 3706 replies

In WALA's case, it's filling the two hours for the outgoing The Real at 10 and Nick Cannon at 11. Wasn't Judge Jerry cancelled as well? If they do two hours of Studio 10 and a 2 hour Midday newscast, that would be 8 1/2 hours of local news and programming. I know Gray is ramping up their local news and programming efforts, but this could be the most of any market in the country up to this point, and a sign of things to come for local TV as we know it...
-
WALA FOX 10 is expanding Studio 10 to TWO hours and adding a midday newscast this fall. Not sure if the midday news will be on at 11am or noon. Joe Emer announced this morning on Good Day Gulf Coast, and he will be moving to these new shows, bringing Eric Reynolds back to the program with Sarah Wall. Eric currently anchors the 4:30-7am portion. That's the first time I've seen a lifestyle program expand to 2 hours....has this happened anywhere else?

Changing ownership is a factor that has played into both WALA and WKRG. Prior sets were initiated under prior owners (Lin & Media General) and WALA's set refresh was a late addition by Meredith right before turning the keys over to Gray. With the change of owners has been a shuffle of managers (and change in priorities that goes along with that). Sets are often budgeted years in advance and the "bandaids" that were implemented were able to fix things while not spending for a totally new set. Hopefully for stations like WJW that were gifted (finally!) a new set in the end days of Tribune, that it will last for a while, (hopefully not as long as the set it replaced!)

WKRG even did a retrospective of pretty much ALL of their prior sets... https://youtu.be/en3oiNW7KDU A takeaway from this, in the 70s, WKRG took some inspiration from WAGA. Their 1970-90s logo was based on the 60's WAGA logo, and the 'TV5' logo (which I've never seen before) is virtually identical to the WAGA logo they used prior to their "A5" "5 Belongs" logo. Yes, it's a Nexstar set. Yes, it's a corner desk. Still better than any other set in the market. I get the idea that it's basically things around the walls and nothing in the middle, giving little depth to each section. Nexstsr seems to cram as many looks as they can into a single studio.

That's good to hear. I figured that a potential move to San Antonio would be overkill, especially since that operation handles their 3 stations and does news for Winston-Salem. Hopefully they were compensated well for the eminent domain to overtake their current facility.

Joce Sterman has jumped ship from Sinclair to Gray, where she'll be part of the "InvestigateTV" unit: https://www.investigatetv.com/page/meet-the-team/

Given the pattern of Nexstar sets over the past several years, I can see where WKRG is heading... Like most people on this forum, I hated the old set, but Nexstar really did a good job of getting some mileage out of it with the re-configuration they did a few years back. Hopefully, WALA's refresh this past winter was a band-aid that Gray will take care of in a year or two....much like the WKRG refresh was.

It sounds like all of the Georgia stations they are launching will all be part of a network based out of the affiliate they are launching in Atlanta. So this may be the way that Gray is entering Macon without having their own full powered station in the market.

The Ever-Evolving Gray Graphics Situation...Thread
tyrannical bastard replied to NEOMatrix's topic in Graphics
The "honeycomb" look is probably the closest thing Gray has for a national package right now, only because it's the package they're using for their "Local News Live" channel that uses their stations' content to fill time on each other's streams. Outside of the Southeast, are there any other major clusters of stations that have picked it up? The only other two I can recall are Clarksburg and Harrisonburg... -

That's better numbers than Nexstar's NewsNation for sure.... Maybe they should run a Matlock marathon? It could easily double or possibly even triple their current numbers... And if they make it available on OTT...oh wait... -
The Ever-Evolving Gray Graphics Situation...Thread

I"m hoping the WBTV package is the one that WVUE eventually ends up with. It's probably the most "major market" look they have right now. Then again, it would look a lot like WGNO's package, especially with the way the lower thirds are designed. Graphic packages aside, as long as it doesn't look totally awful and makes the on-air product look like garbage, WVUE should be just fine. -
Well, when you consider that it was a legendary image campaign launched by WFAA-TV almost 35 years ago, and it's been going strong almost as long on WNIR with very little change....

Tom Skilling for sure....now if Nexstar lured away James Spann to CBS42, then they could have a chance. They could have had Alan Sealls (back), but Nexstar sort of bungled his contract at WKRG, which is why he crossed the street to Sinclair and WPMI. Alan worked at WGN (and later WMAQ) before getting the WKRG chief meteorologist position which he had close to 20 years. -
Weigel may be looking to use W27EA-D for either MeTV+, the soon-to-be-launched Story, or even snag some or all of WBNX's Weigel offerings. Being that WBNX is WBNX, and how they lost the CW under mysterious circumstances, could Gray and Weigel know something about them that we haven't found out about....yet? WOIO/WUAB is way overstuffed with channels, so they could likely afford to lose something like MeTV, and bump MyNetworkTV somewhere else.

Moving WGUD to the west seems like thing to do, especially to better cover Biloxi & Gulfport. To the west is two more low-powered Channel 31s, KNOV-CD in New Orleans and W31EL-D in Baton Rouge. Way up in Meridian, MS is the full-powered WGBC on 31 as well. Technically, as long as they don't have any issues with all of these stations, then all is well. So even if all of these low-powered stations are neck and neck with each other, then all is well, right? Even if they clog the airwaves with their low-powered signals?

With the severe weather that's been crisscrossing the southeast, another missed opportunity for NewsNation to prove it's worth. Case in point, as parts of New Orleans were being devastated by a violent tornado, WGNO was basically asleep at the wheel covering the weather and then going back into regular programming, while every other station in New Orleans was wall to wall with damage coverage. Meanwhile on NewsNation, the same old partisan drivel, trying to be another news channel. I turn on Sinclair's National Desk, and what are they covering....the storm!!! -
Better Weigel than HC2. This leaves WNIR 100.1 "The Talk of Akron" as the Klaus family's only media asset. They turned in 1520 am several years ago, and cashed out WAOH-LD in the spectrum auction. The two low power stations used to be the "CAT" or Cleveland Akron television network. Much of their local programming went away in 2009 when they picked up RTV. Speaking of local programming, where did "Son of Ghoul" end up? I think it's on the Image Video stations out of Canton. And WNIR still uses THIS image package to this day.... Upgrades are coming to W27EA for sure. They probably still have the Video Toaster that W29AI (WAOH) launched with!

Putting the newspaper ad together with this clip of WEAR from 1980, does make their "Clearly Yours" campaign a work of Peters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xpy8lJYqx64 The guy in the newspaper ad was Tom Scanlan, and the anchor in the newsbreak was Peter Neumann. Both of them were involved in the founding of WBKB in Alpena. They must have "flown south" to Pensacola soon after. Neumann served as WEAR's news director until 2006 and later finished out his career at WPTA in Fort Wayne. After Pensacola, Scanlan also owned WGTU/WGTQ and founded WBKP & WBUP in Marquette. Sadly, Tom Scanlan passed away in 2017 after a battle with cancer.
