  1. When the creators of the following open (WJAR, Providence, 1990s) were considering what to include in the voice-over, they came up with a list of possible slogans. Because they couldn't agree on which one to pick, they included them all. Well... not really, but that's what it sounds like to me :o : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JRQ1vR_uQc

  5. KTSP (now KSAZ), Phoenix, open, 1986: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuyFe2KRb8E (BTW, can someone help me identify this theme? It's so familiar, yet I can't quite place it. It almost sounds like a British regional theme in a way.) KTSP (now KSAZ), Phoenix, newsbrief, 1986: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LR_kr5qkeCc

  11. And speaking of the ITN/ITV News theme, check out the open of Svet, a brand-new newscast that premiered on Slovenia's Kanal A (POP TV's sister station) yesterday: Go to http://24ur.com/naslovnica/videooddaje/index.php and select "Svet, 1. del" from the options below. It's "ITN meets Fox News"!
  12. ^^^ BTW, this legendary ITN/ITV News theme was also used in the open of the fictional program Capital Beat on The West Wing. You can hear it at 1:42 in this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06yGDdc_BWE

  14. Staying in Australia, here's a wonderful 1979 clip of MTN9 Griffith with local news, ads, promos, etc.: And here's GMV6 in Shepparton from 1981: Something more recent (2006)... the first edition of WIN News for Western Australia, which had been WIN TV's only market without local news: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tq_tjg4Rlu8
  15. Here's a nicecompilation of National Nine News opens from various markets (Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, national): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8tYIWWDgFs As you may be able to tell from their different opens, NWS9 Adelaide and STW9 Perth are Nine affiliates, while the others are O&Os.
  16. Aussiebeachut has uploaded a video that does a nice job illustrating an interesting affiliation switch in Australia. A few posts above, we saw a clip of QTV in Queensland with a Nine Network-style local news open: QTV was about to become the Nine affiliate throughout regional Queensland as part of the process called "aggregation." At the last minute, however, the owners of WIN Television (essentially a large station group consisting mostly of Nine affiliates) bought a competing station, which became a Nine affiliate instead. QTV was therefore forced to link up with the third-ranked Ten Network. Here's a clip from the following year, with QTV now using a Ten-style news open and the name QTV Eyewitness News: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u67NOiq2VNA BTW, note that the Ten Network opens were based in part on the CBS Evening News open of that time.
  17. A few more from btvgmv6... NWS9, Adelaide, 1980s (newsbreak open): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzXOZGyktjY BTW, was this the only Australian station to use the Action News brand? Here's a promo from the same station: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZWfseZCUVg BTV6, Ballarat, 1987 (open): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0pV6QpbPr0 GWN, Western Australia (open): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cUnX0pUEhw MidState Television, NSW, mid-1980s (open): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUrNKpmhzmg
  18. This may be old news, but YouTube user aussiebeachut recently uploaded some very interesting classic news clips from Australia. QTQ9, Brisbane, 1983 (open): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GNmJWWkU1E QTQ9, Brisbane, 1989 (open): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VN2_IbiswB8 QTQ9, Brisbane, 1990 (open): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybITWZsMm7o ATV10, Melbourne, 1980 (promo and news open): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKDBuaC4yBA ATV10, Melbourne, 1982 (open): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJ4ZpJBmJC8 BTQ7, Brisbane, 1983 (open): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duBPyPyl0is TVQ0, Brisbane, 1983 (newsbreak): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5SO_tC9Rak TVQ0, Brisbane, 1983 (open): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytmf7M2XF-U Ten, Good Morning Australia, 1982 (open): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqyU6i71gnw QTV, Queensland, 1990 (promo and news open): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-GuWm3ZPGc And here are three clips from btvgmv6: SCN, Victoria, 1993 (open): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVuig2Y0Y2Q SCN, Victoria, 1994 (includes a short close from ATV10 in Melbourne and various clips of SCN's last-ever newscast): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_4v09iTbtk VIC TV, Victoria, 1994 (newsbreak): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-11d3Gui0Bw&NR
  19. Here's a long 1979 clip of ITN's News at 545 in the United Kingdom, the first day back after a strike that left the ITV network off the air for weeks: Here's a clip of ITN's News at Ten from the mid-1980s. It includes a promo for a local newsmagazine and an LWT (London Weekend Television) ID: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRDP4JKjfGU Same newscast, 1993: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KHzjP1komA Here's a 1955 news open from Germany's ARD (the same musical signature is still used today): Staying in Germany, here's SAT.1's morning show open from the 1980s: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWYY8yPwlsA Here's SAT.1's Bavarian regional news open from 1995: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4W8_jVnjoGQ Still in Germany, here's a ProSieben news open from 1994: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9oTI6sT2gY En Antena from Antena 3 in Spain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQbCEDSfzHk
  20. Here's a special find: A clip of the main evening newscast in Bosnia-Herzegovina from 1994, including the open. At the time, Sarajevo, from where the newscast originated, was surrounded by Serb forces and subject to almost continous shelling, as it had been since 1992. The lead story on this day was a shell that his a group of children, killing seven of them. Parts of the clip (after the open) contain disturbing video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alLlsItbE3w The anchor you see in the clip later wrote a book about these wartime newscasts from Sarajevo.
  21. Here are the same elections as seen on Channel 1 (IBA): Here's the IBA news open from 1993: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4s6m4FD6bU And here's a 2006 clip of Israel's Channel 10 (a.k.a. Israel 10) news: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6i5R4ll52U
  22. Some more: RAI 1 (Telegiornale), Italy, 1954: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp0hfnQu3-M RAI 1, 2006 (Note that a part of the original music is still used, more than 50 years later!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WL7hURI4VOc RAI 2 (TG2), Italy, late 1980s: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mbj7g8_Uns Rete 4 (TeleGiornale 4), Italy, 2003: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIOO_AWLQIM Tele 5 (TeleGiornale 5), Italy, 2004: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_T-o3AWsVo SABC TV1, South Africa, 1992 (in Afrikaans): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aEMhbI1vaw TV3, Malaysia: TV1, Malaysia: RTM, Malaysia (in English):
  23. Thanks! However, I'd just like to point out that the second clip is, of course, from a parody, even though the graphical elements are essentially the same as in the original newscast. I tried to find some opens used by RTL's other stations across Europe, but I haven't had much luck. The best I could do is this heavily-edited clip from RTL-TVI in Belgium (2006)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWUsbqoSQkc ...and this 1990 clip, with both the open and the close, from RTL4 in the Netherlands (note that the backdrop features landmarks from various cities around the world): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mum_3eMNiaE
  24. Thanks, Hinto. I thought that newscentre was talking about Gari's Eyewitness News music package. Still, I love the 1980s Australian material (which I got hooked on thanks to fox1 ). More YouTube clips: A special report from Germany's RTL on Saddam Hussein's execution: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNk76cug_Uo ORF's (Austria) short afternoon newscast in its entirety: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73P4Kr_pxiI Here's an open from RTL in the Netherlands: I've posted this one before, but I just love the very 1970s feel of this 1977 TVE (Spain) open: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23LIaqOmpVA Same network three years earlier (1974); the open is already in color, but the rest of the newscast isn't: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnB3t2egS_M Assorted 1970s and '80s clips of France's FR3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9yc-ldJRs0 The 1986 open from FR3 in France (features a helicopter in the open, which is unusual for a European network): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfqvcian984 A very psychedelic 1975 open from TF1 in France: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeMfku0dybQ Same network, ten years later: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHD6FbULEfw
  25. Here are two more... Nova TV in Croatia (includes just a part of the American-looking open -- it was put on YouTube because a camera hits another camera): News from communist-era Czechoslovakia (open):
