WLS 1989 4pm/5pm, beginning of 6pm This was from the days when they didn't use any music for most of the bumpers, but at 41:40 a bumper rarely if ever used by the other stations with the Gari Cool Hand Luke package.

KPIX 1981 clip
-
WABC Eyewitness News 5PM and beginning of 6PM August 1987 KABC Eyewitness News July 1991 Looks like there was a couple year period where KABC used the '84 vintage Gari package before transitioning to the early 90s synthesized update.
-
Funny they never name the fill in weather anchor. Here's KVOA in 1996, one of the later uses of the '84 Gari update to Cool Hand Luke, and you see a very young Savannah Guthrie

Yeah and Pete Wilson handing it off to him at the end is also ironic. I'm the one who dug up this tape over 15 years ago. Found it in the archives of KPIX - the CBS affiliate 2 blocks away. There was no fanfare or exploitation about his departure. Some back story... His brother was the GM at KABC for many years. When Cap Cities bought ABC in 1985 they were both in the line of fire and left their respective jobs within a year of each other. Cap Cities thought Van was overpaid, KPIX had overtaken them in the ratings, and they gambled the station would move forward with 'cheaper' talent (like Pete Wilson). Van was reportedly making over $1 million a year then (equivalent to $2-$3 million today). Van didn't back down and did well enough with investments that he didn't have to work. He probably entertained other offers but his retirement was a bellwether for the news industry changing. In the 70s he was the first anchor to bet a station wouldn't blink at an astronomical salary and he got it. Then 10 years later Cap Cities was the first big management team to bet that a star like that wasn't needed. The end result was this unceremonious but I will say dignified sign off. And he's been happily retired since. A great broadcaster - and a smart, reputable man. His son is a high level Hollywood executive now, so the talent runs in the family.

KRON 1986 - satire of newspaper / TV wars. At 2:00 they do a send up of the news open with Ken and Barbie.
-
It's not news, but close enough 1985 Donahue The transitions to and from commercials have more of the 1985-90 theme than I've seen anywhere else. Not sure why the full theme has remained so elusive for so long.
-
I actually think it's cool. More elaborate production to do the chroma on-set with a special shot than just a bug and graphic talking head window.
-
Nice to see more KCRA holes filled. Looks like they kept elements of the 1984 package for bumpers, and just refreshed the open. This look lasted until about 1992. Here's the open and part of a KCRA newscast from 1993 http://vimeo.com/59929508 And that WJBK set looks like a sibling of the KTVU set of that era.

Discovered composers & publishers of music themes

Anyone want to speculate on KDKA in the 80s? Conventional wisdom says News Image / News Image Plus from Tuesday. I get that the signature matches. But the signature also matches the notes of their 'KD and You' slogan. The cuts they use don't match any used by other News Image stations...so it was a custom job. But by whom? They did two versions - one around 1984, the other an update around 1987. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mh2EdmkkMGk -
Maybe chalk it up to the community relations person rather than the talent. Maybe at 10 they alerted the staff of the tour. And at 6 they didn't. Hard to tell who is there for a business meeting or other reason. But having 4 people in talent say hello seems pretty good for a quick tour.

Yes Magid was the source of it. And Gannett has a relationship to this day with Magid.

At 3:00 is that Bill Ratliff carrying a sack of booze?

KRON NewsCenter 4 Midday open 1987

Cool - would be great if the cuts could be donated to the TVPMM. Might be more amenable to approach it that way.

My guess is the original was a VTS Productions package. His bio has him working there from 1986/1987 onward. So maybe they had him work on updates to it. This clip from late 1985 has just the original music as the opener Then a few months later in early '86 we get that clip with the more majestic version, but interim graphics. So guessing the original debuted a year or two before 1985 whenever that desk with the blue stripe debuted. Their 1986 set was from a move to a new building, so my bet is that's when the more majestic open was commissioned, and the copyright wasn't filed until '87. Would love to find the reels for all of these! Classic package. Maybe have TVPMM reach out to him.

KCRA 1990-92 open http://earlgrizzell.com/Earl_Grizzell/WELCOME.html It's about 2 minutes into the TV Production REel The 1988-90 open is about 6:55 in. Looks like he did the 1988 and beyond updates to 'Where the news comes first.' Still unclear who did the original orchestral theme around 83/84.

Finally on NewsCenterII. This one almost got the full bumper What is the status of reels of that package? Some good jazzy cuts they used for the late night news on KNBC missing as well.

Apparently BDA/PROMAX posts items from its archives every week or so. Here's one from KPIX in 1986 http://brief.promaxbda.org/content/from-the-promaxbda-archives-kpix-5-san-francisco-1986 Don't remember that part of the KPIX mid-80s set with the Alamo Square view in the background, but it's a nice touch
