  1. Interesting it's also the youngest of their big market sets dating to 2017 except the WABC special case....KGO, WLS, KTRK, KABC were in the 2015-16 range I think https://6abc.com/post/new-action-news-set-coming-soon-6abc-studio-undergoes-makeover/15136917/ Wonder what prompted them to go earlier other than being a test for what WABC implements in Hudson Square. Maybe post Gardner prompting some more retooling.
  2. It is distinctive...not my cup of tea but the overhead bulkhead gives it some depth and gives the effect it's a larger space than it is. Elements that add depth and dimension to shots have been missing from a lot of designs the last 10 or so years as screens proliferated so nice they gave that some thought here.
  3. Well, new this year....but been on air several months now...along with the move to a new suburban building The 'KMOV 4' header above the main screen is a nice finishing touch. Low cost thing that emphasizes branding in a heroic way, makes it less generic, and something more stations would be wise to consider. There are many ways to apply this sort of treatment above the screen area. Strange to see a newscast branded as 'First Alert,' makes it feel like all the anchors are weather anchors.

  4. The way they use video and graphics behind the anchors is creative, and the fully seamless screen gives a lot of flexibility. Hard to watch that deep red all over, but when they go blue or other backgrounds it's very watchable and something distinctive. Beats the sets in a corner look. But not quite ABC O&O kind of timeless professionalism.
  5. KPIX 1987 promo - haven't come across this promo cut of Telesound Signature / And You before
  6. WCCO 75th anniversary
  7. Bill Evans' first WABC weathercast - see Rolanda extend a handshake after the end of the show.
  8. I didn't realize NY and Chicago were less formal with the pins. Looks like KABC has kept them going consistently 70s to today. You'd think CA being more laid back would have been more in and out with it than NY / Chicago but you're right - they are the most consistent with it. I think it's a nice touch that adds professionalism and reinforces the brand.
  9. Funny enough KABC was really late to the NS2000+ scene...didn't pick it up until around 1990, so only had it about 4 years. Before that it was Cool Hand Luke opens plus their own synth version of Cool Hand Luke for the bumpers and close dating back to the mid 80s. For this month's update maybe there was some research or thought that the teletype sound has some brand equity among Angelinos or nostalgia among the staff. At least when they ran their anniversary clips I remember something about the Cool Hand Luke music being in there more than I thought it would. Going back to 99 when WABC picked up v2 of the EWN package they really amped up the teletype sound that got diminished when they moved from the CHL based package in 94.
  10. KOVR Live at Noon November 1983 - they tried a hybrid news / lifestyle studio guest format
  11. KABC Eyewitness News 1988 Thanksgiving 4pm
  12. WDIV started a trend of hourlong anniversary specials in Detroit Here's WXYZ - Robbie and Diana look great and both very gracious about Bill WXYZ promos reel And WJBK getting in on it
  13. Ah Geraldo… This I’ll give to NewsNation and Nexstar… Perry Sook is filling the broadcast leadership void left by Les Moonves’ resignation. A shameless cross promoter because it works, doesn’t try to chase the young adult audience that’s been fickle for decades, and pushing retrans hard. How much juice is left from satellite and cable and streamers paying subs - who knows - but those years long contracts give a lot of runway.
  14. Debra O'Connell now running ABC News and the O&Os https://nypost.com/2024/02/14/media/abc-news-president-kim-godwin-gets-new-micromanager-boss-effectively-demoted-sources/ Guess it's a good thing for WABC (and maybe stations in general) a WABC lifer is at the top of the combined role
  15. KJEO 1985 (also some KFSN at the beginning)
  16. WAVY 1981 last day of 'Area 10 Eyewitness News' - full clip of the 'proud as a peacock' affiliate news theme at the end
  17. WLS Eyewitness News 10pm November 1986 The unique part of this clip is the set covered in blue panels for the election
  18. Thank goodness. Those grey toned shots with the 'better' Bay Area in the open were so grim looking.
  19. This post has a “wide” shot and confirms this is a temp set - new one might be a year away https://www.instagram.com/reel/C2vpLR0vKCl/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
  20. Might be - someone in another post mentioned KUSI in a “new building.” I remember some media piece saying they would consolidate at KUSIs building because half the building was vacant. Maybe they are in the KSWB temp set area while the KUSI building is renovated for dual use. Also a data point…a job posting for a weekend morning producer says KUSI is #1 in that time slot. Unfortunately for both stations the rescan this month is turbulent - lots of confused people on social plus streaming has gone wonky in the last week. Edited to add... As of today KUSI.com redirects into Fox5SanDiego, with the KUSI logo at the top adjacent to Fox 5.
  21. Moving onto a temp set https://www.instagram.com/reel/C2f4n5Cyu6q/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
  22. Looks better than the O&O implementation. Less in your face with the eye and CBS name. But close enough you pick up the cues it’s related to the network news parent.
  23. When I last watched just before Jim’s retirement I had the same network nightly news impression except 6 seemed even more professional.
  24. I think they and PVI pay more attention to their generational (older) viewers and in WABCs case ethnic communities who might be newer to the language. Both groups probably value straightforward, easy to see and digest info on the screen over the latest design trends. And the older viewers are creatures of habit. Kind of like the Wheel / Jeopardy approach - change is gradual and iterative.
  25. Yeah probably #2 is a part of it. Interesting touch the ticker banner at the end has the live time and current weather headlines. Also guessing the temp/forecast tile next to Lee in the open is also 'live.'
