Hopefully, once they hire their programming chief, they can nail down what type of network they want the CW to be. I fear this may turn into a NewsNation situation were programming is all over the place and shows are incompatible with each other. I get wanting to save money and whatnot, but that can't be done overnight. They need slow down a bit and plan things out.

NBC 5 is now a tie-optional operation, and I'm not sure how to feel about it.

Yeah... it's way too casual of a look for a news anchor (regardless of the time of day). Not sure if this is an attempt to appeal to a younger demo, but this isn't the way to do it.

The statement NBCU/Comcast said in a presentation this week was that is it under evaluation.  Lot's of "done deal" speculation is out there.  I would imagine it gets complicated as they have to deal with the producers of 10 pm shows, especially Dick Wolf who would lose two hours of content.  Would it mean Saturday becomes appointment TV like it was in the days of All in the Family, Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Burnett?  That ship sank decades ago.

Wolf and NBC have a partnership that has lasted more than 3 decades and I'm certain the two can work something out that benefits them both. The Chicago shows and SVU are in the last (of a 3 yr) renewal deal so discussions/renew talks about those shows were going to happen anyway.

What I could see happening is dramas having shorter seasons (which wouldn't be a bad thing).

  4. Even without Alan, WLS will remain in great position overall in comparison to say WMAQ and WBBM with their current anchor roster.

I could see small changes happening with ‘planning for the future’ being pushed down the line (in another 5-10 years maybe).

Nope. The long left and right side walls, with the mounted monitors are hard set, but everything up-set from the cameras is virtual. Only the desk and anchors (ha) are real. It's all a green screen, otherwise. You can see all that in the OP link.

Yes. I see now. Nevertheless, a really cool effect. Not 'feeling' the graphics, but I can get past that.

I don't think it's Studio 32, as this space appears to house the weather computers.

Yeah.. I just did some more digging. It’s the weather center/office. This was completed in July.

That would be a shock to have all of those channels under one roof.

It’s just too much content to manage. There’s no way they could make it work without cutting a lot of content, people, etc… to make it make sense financially.

How wrong this was. WMAQ did a spectacular job with a small space.

I think a few of us were very pessimistic about what the end result would be given the quick turnaround. To take, normally, 8-12 weeks worth of work down to 4 is very impressive.

I would argue that this is the best set currently in the market.

Love how dynamic the desk is, but those are some weird shadows in "Chicago." I wonder if they'll try to fix that. Makes it look like a blown up low quality jpg.

I could see them getting rid of 'Chicago' because it's not really needed. As Marion mentioned in her video, there are other elements representing the city, lake and state.  Plus, it doesn't change color it seems.

I wonder what happened to her to leave WNYW and RETIRE (major), she hasn't been at the station too long and she's not old at all (59 years old).

No reason to work into your 60s/70s if you don't have to. She has accomplished a lot in her career so, in her eyes, there's nothing else left to achieve.

We're so busy talking about stuff that can change colors, but no one mentioned the possibility of this.

So the peacock logo is actually translucent with color lights behind it or is each feather a different color light? A cool feature regardless. Also, looks like Brant still uses the green screen and not the curved video wall. Not sure he did all his weather reports that way or uses both. He ended the newscast at the green screen.

Definitely a nice facelift and FINALLY a new desk. I cannot tell if its a video screen one or if that NBC Chicago logo is physically on it. I don't like that they used the NBC Chicago logo . It looks blurry at times. The set is a lot brighter! I have a feeling those LED's can change colors where the brick is and around the screens. It would be nice if they could use orange for mornings.

I could be wrong, but it looks like the logo is attached to a clear screen with clear lines attached along the sides (with light being projected onto them). It also appears the lights aren't working for the line at the top. I agree that it looks like LEDs (and the front of the desk) could change colors (i.e..red for breaking news, etc..). Nevertheless, they did a really good job in a short amount of time.

That video background has a little too much depth, too much going on.

Again it's just more of the same: Trump, inflation, COVID and now the Queen. In this era of news saturation, it's every station clamoring to cover the same thing rather than aiming for some streak of uniqueness.

I can't act like Days of Our Lives was in the best condition before it got taken off the air, but it will be missed.

I wonder how long Dateline at 1 PM with last.

I agree the background is a lot to take in. I do 'hope' that they offer viewers something different as time goes on because a rehash of news/topics that have already been covered hours before is a waste. 'Dateline in the Daytime' feels like a placeholder (or should be). It will be interesting to see what they come up with for that hour.

Agreed. Long overdue. My only criticism is that they should really stop using the Michigan Avenue video feed as a backdrop. There’s a thousand different options available to use. Be creative!!!

Looks like the end of the week is the debut. Michelle Relerford eluded on Facebook to Friday being the big debut. My assumption would be Thursday as they typically debut at 4pm and the morning crew gets it the next day.

Michelle (along with Patrick) posted a video earlier today saying that it could be 'another week' (or so) before the new set is revealed. Sounds like it's done (she says it's 'beautiful'). What I do know is that the black curtain that surrounds most of the set remains (as of this past Wednesday) which means they decided against using the newsroom as a backdrop again.

To answer the streaming question, all NBC and CBS broadcasts will be simulcast on their respective streamers:

No word on any Fox streaming simulcast, which I guess makes sense because they don’t really have a paid service. Wonder if that’ll change soon

‘Sports on tubi’ offers 10 (or so) live Sports Channels (Fox Sports, MLB network, etc…). Now I don’t believe they air a direct simulcast of FS1, the ‘possibility’ does exist.

  17. Quick update…. Construction of the new Jumbotron has begun (all the video panels have been removed) with a ton of wiring work being done currently. No work has started on the street side studio as of yet.

A little set update: Marion Brooks is back from vacation this week and posted on Facebook today to look for the new set next week.

This would (somewhat) line up with the assumption that this would be a 2 week process start to finish. It will be interesting to see what they come up with in such a small space.

I think NBC should replicate what there doing in New York or I think they could do two sets on both sides of the newsroom like MSNBC did.

When Telemundo Chicago moved to the NBC Tower in 2003, the space was split in half with WMAQ (newsroom & set) on one side and WSNS (newsroom & set) on the other. NBC is doing (essentially) the same thing with WNBC & WNJU.

Did we receive confirmation that they're only on the temp set for two weeks? From reading Patrick Fazio's post above, I see that Kate Chappell is anchoring with him for two weeks, but I don't see anything about the temp set before for two weeks.

No it hasn’t been confirmed. I agree that Fazio’s post seems to reference Chappell anchoring with him (for 2 weeks) not how long construction of the new set is going to take.

Given that they’re not actually in the space/on set;  (i.e.. a temporary setup off to the side) that would ‘suggest’ whatever work is being done is more expansive than changing the desk.

I'm not sure how significant of changes they could make in just 2 weeks, but we can certainly dream. For others here that watch more often than me, when was the last time anyone saw the newsroom? I've got my hopes and dreams of what I would do to the whole space, but I'm not holding my breath.

It’s been a while since I last saw it, but I believe the newsroom hasn’t been updated much over the years. That said, a quick (and simple) paint job could easily breathe new life to the space.

As far as what they could do in 2 weeks (or longer)…who knows?? Just adding a new desk and headers and footers to the video walls would be a significant enough improvement imo.
