  1. If all else fails, just stumble around and chant local, Local, LOCAL a few times and things will magically appear to look up in your life! The smart ones will find a better company to work for or get out of the business.

If they're smart, they are choose the latter. The media (both digital/OTA) business model is dead.

  2. Sure wonder if it was a tiny one-off package from Arnold that was custom and never syndicated/marketed? It has some similiar stylings to some of his stuff back in the early 90's. Anyway, that's one opinion and it lines up with the fact that they had another Arnold custom package that they had used up until 96. You could always email them a clip of it and see if they recognize it.

Always thought it sounded like Newsleader in parts...

  3. These two stations may be a good fixer upper for Meredith, but they have the same problem in Atlanta with WGCL as it has never had the chance to compete there.

It could be a good fixer upper for Hearst or Graham also..

add: the signal is also a major cause of the lack of ratings/revenue. raycom should make effects to the switch DTV channels or if not, swap with wuab, but they're cheap and probably will never happen unless the stations were to have a new owner.

  4.

From the "it ain't broke, don't fix it" file: Here is a news open from 1998 (yes, 1998) from flagship CTV station CFTO in Toronto. This was after CTV bought the Baton stations. This was only a few months after they rebranded as CFTO News from the NightBeat/World Beat brand with the set/image that dates back to 1988 but before the first incarnation of the Leak look/"big screen" set that was unveiled by winter (not 1999 as previously stated), from the looks of Rewind Eats The Tapes' clips. There is a few clips that channel from Citytv and Global:

From the look of the two clips, they switched to the Paul Hoffert theme/graphics the same time as CP24 launched (in 1998) and not 1997, as I previously thought.

  5. The moment that Action News was canned at WOIO/WUAB was the death knell of any competitive spirit at Reserve Square. Raycom was really hands-off when Applegate was there but soon as he retired, WOIO/WUAB was going to suffer being an oblivious Raycom station.

just like it was when they first brought it with the Hometeam debacle..

  6. Nichole Vrsansky's bio is also gone from 19's website too.

looks like Raycom's getting ready to the cash register. always thought woio had potential, but raycheap always seems to find a way to screw themselves. (even though there have been some bright spots over the years.) it's been troubled ever since they merged with wuab and mistakenly dumped the management team that led wuab's original ten o'clock news into a market leader, even worse after raycom ate more than they can chew with malrite and started cuts. too bad scripps just can't get it's act together again with wews.i remember ted henry saying in his retirement speech that 5 will be one of only two news departments left in cleveland (with the other possibly fox8?) in a couple years time because of its structure.

  7. Denise Dufala announced on her Facebook page she is leaving WOIO after 22 years with the station to spend more time with her family. She just celebrated 30 years in the Cleveland TV market. Her first eight years were at WJW before she moved to 19.

    aka another Raycom budget cut

  8. A set and graphics change isn't going to move the needle in the ratings.

The Green Bay market has a population that is older and its hard to change their habits. When Journal bought the station in the early 2000's they did pour a lot of money into the station but the ratings were still low. Maybe one of the other stations will mess up and then WGBA can grab some viewers?

WGBA has low overhead and makes a little money. A company like Scripps isn't going try to compete.

To be said, from all accounts I've heard WGBA had lots of potential and was growing audience is first few years (1995-99, especially when late WISC legend Tedd McConnell was there and built the department from scratch.), once Jay Zollar jumped to WLUK, combined with short-sighted moves by predecessors in both the later Aries and Journal era (Remember the infamous financial and ratings mess when Journal bought them and tried the tabloid route with John Shelby as ND in the mid-00's.), their image with the community (advertisers and viewers) was destroyed. It was been a very tough last decade for them (Larry McCarren's stint was a good first step), but it looks Scripps, along with new ND Julie Moravchik have the most progress so far in rehabilitating NBC26's image in the community and making it respectful once again after it was badly damaged (and almost burned to the ground) by Journal.
