  1. Shaye Ganam, a morning news anchor on Global TV Edmonton, is leaving his post after 21 years. He is moving to the company's radio division to host the morning show on 630 CHED. Global TV Edmonton's morning news is the #1 show in its timeslot, at one point beating the competition with a margin of 8 to 1.

  2. 11 hours ago, Northerner said:

Technically, Bell Globemedia (a predecessor) held a 40% share of V's former incarnation, TQS (with Cogeco owning the majority 60%).  The ownership was lost when TQS filed for bankruptcy and was purchased by Remstar.

One would assume that with Bell would restore local news to the V owned-and-operated stations and re-launch an in-house national news department.

I'm not counting on Bell to build local newsrooms across Quebec for V.

I reckon they'll start with a national (re: provincial) news operation out of Montreal (at CTV Montreal?), a parliamentary bureau in Ottawa using CTV's resources, stringers for regional Quebec, and dub any CTV News stories from across the country in French.

Bell would probably have bigger issues to take care of before they get to news. Does anyone think a re-naming of the network might be in the works?

    9? I thought they were channel 51...

Cable 9, channel 51. NBC 7 and FOX 5 also use their cable channel numbers as their brand as San Diego has a high percentage of cable subscribers.

  4. There's an election happening in the province of Alberta in Canada. Global, CTV, and CBC are presenting rolling coverage, while Citytv will be presenting special coverage at 8 PM and 11 PM.

Global is out of the gates early at 7 PM MT (1 hour before polls close). Their coverage is being broadcast out of Global Edmonton's studios, and is simulcast on Global Edmonton, Global Calgary, Global Lethbridge, Global News Radio, and online.

CBC begins their coverage at 7:30 PM MT from CBC Edmonton's studios, and is being broadcast on CBC Edmonton, CBC Calgary, and CBC News Network.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHPv5T0pvN8

CTV will start their coverage at 8 PM MT, not sure if CTV Calgary and CTV Edmonton will have separate coverage.

Citytv will have province wide coverage out of their Citytv Calgary studios. They won't have rolling coverage, according to the TV listings. The news specials will air from 8-9 PM, and 11 PM onwards.

Is a news rebrand incoming? I sincerely hope not, their current graphics are too good.

No, the current graphics package remains. Only the news logos were updated/replaced with the one above.

  7. Canada is having a nationwide test of its emergency alert system (AlertReady) this week. The test was performed today (May 7) for Ontario and Quebec residents. The rest of the country will have their tests done on May 9. Mandatory mobile alerts were also rolled out to LTE-connected mobile devices this month, hence the reason for this week's tests.

This video shows the test activation seen in Montreal (CFCF) and Toronto (CFTO/CITY/CIII).

  8. Rosemary Barton can't do Power and Politics anymore on CBC-NN because she's now doing The National on CBC Television.

So let's meet Vassy Kapelos. She worked for CITV Edmonton and CFSK Saskatoon. She used to work for Global National's Ottawa bureau chief and was the host of The West Block.

    Keywords... USED TO and WAS.

Vassy starts hosting Power and Politics in March: http://www.cbc.ca/news/entertainment/kapelos-p-and-p-1.4537311

She did stellar work as Global's provincial politics reporter for CITV and CICT Calgary (based out of Edmonton), and did great work for Global National and The West Block. On top of the layoffs announced across Global News yesterday, this one IMO is a blow to the news organization.

  9. I'm not too surprised by this. I don't think Tom likes anchoring (he would rather be out in the field) and Ben is B team material (C team imo, but..). Larry and Dan were not moving off of mornings for obvious reasons. Steve wasn't going back to evenings and the weekend guys were staying on the weekends.

I thought Tom Negovan to be ambitious enough to go after the primary anchor chair. Not that being a senior reporter is a bad thing.

Just a thought, but I'm wondering if Larry ever had a conversation with their news director to discuss the possibilities of replacing Suppelsa...

  10. Negovan would be my pick as successor, but I wish they'd give Ben and Lourdes the 6 o'clock hour. I don't care for the evening news falling under a singular brand, and there's no reason why that competent team only has an hour while every other anchor duo sits for at least 2 per day.

Agreed, Tom Negovan should be on the anchor desk at WGN. Ben and Lourdes should also get 6:00 along with their 4:00 show.

Also, this has probably been said in this thread, but 4:00 is NOT "evening".

Anyone know how Dan and Lauren rated while filling in for Larry and Robin in the mornings? I'm kinda hoping down the road WGN would give the morning B team 4-7 AM and give Larry and Robin 7-10.

  11. I always watched the News at Nine on Sundays on WGNA while I was away from Chicago, especially the Sunday 9pm newscasts. Instant Replay is basically unwatchable online now because it's blacked out for most of the show.

Part of me wonders when Dan Roan will hang it up.

Or Skilling. Not that I want either to retire now.

  12. Also, I have noticed this week his read has been a lot more monotone, at least compared to when he was anchoring the weekend editions of CBSEN. He doesn't feel as animated or engaged this time around.

  13. Yeah what's the point of that? "Here are the stories we covered in the show, just a refresher." And the movement with the music (beginning and end), while unique, is pretty fast paced and can be a bit disorienting.

For practical reasons, now you have to dedicate 15-30 seconds for the montage at the end of the show, instead of possibly eating that time up for other stories and having just a quick goodbye on some nights.

For reasons based on TV geek-ery, we lose those nice affiliate shots, sweeping camera moves in the studio, and hearing the theme's closing cut without natural sound or someone talking in the background.

  14. A couple of superficial observations:

    1. Noticed the return of the old voiceover on the open.

    2. I've always liked Jeff Glor, but Jeff needs to slow down his reads.

    3. The lower thirds are way too big. I don't like the persistent headline L3 during the story. Leave that for CBSN.

    4. I don't like the montage at the end of the show.

    5. Glad to see the CBS Evening News logo match the CBS network logo. Also the CBSEN logo is in a nice linear arrangement, instead of the goofy looking logo we had before.

    6. Happy that CBSEN kept the same music.

  15. AFAIK, ESPN regularly offers the MNF games to the highest bidder whenever the game can't air on the ABC O&O (because Dancing with the Stars is more important for ABC.) That's why, if the Bears have a MNF game in December when DWTS is over, the MNF game will be on WLS. Otherwise, it gets sold to somebody else in the market, typically WGN, WCIU, or WPWR.

Thanks! Didn't know MNF was offered to the local O&Os or other local stations.

One other thing I noticed this morning, WGN showed a control room shot with a fully staffed control room. The morning show isn't on automation (surprising).

  16. 525,000. Global National and CTV National News both out-rate The National. Numeris' Top 30 list for June 5-11 shows that The National didn't crack the top 30, but GNat and CTVNat did (you'll also see the aggregate numbers for the local CTV News at Six and Global News Hour newscasts).

    http://assets.numeris.ca/Downloads/June%205,%202017%20-%20June%2011,%202017%20(National).pdf

In regards to sports bumping The National, it's no different from the American networks bumping their network newscasts for sports.

Also, I totally missed the fact Wendy Mesley and Peter Mansbridge were married to each other for a few years.

  17. Robin was stunned walking into the studio to find out Larry had already been there, as seen in a Facebook live stream that I'm not in a position to post. And no, no permanent anchor in the early shift. If they use viewer input as an indication, Ana won't get the slot. Most comments are along the lines of "I love her doing Around Town, but not a fan of her anchoring".

I dunno... if they took the viewer feedback regarding Ana that seriously, they would have taken her off by now and had Cortney Hall or someone else anchor. I betcha if Facebook was around back when Robin started anchoring, they would have said the same thing.
