WCBS 2 News New York 1993 - great news set:
-
Where they are healthy is in morning programming ('Studio 10' has built an audience from nothing, and with no lead in, to beat Nine's 'Today Extra' on occasions). Their early evening doesn't set the world on fire, but if you look at demos, their key hour of 'The Project' from 6.30 to 7.30 does very well, and that show is something that is always talked about as likely being copied by other networks (because it attracts exactly the right type of audience). In fact, they just exported the show to New Zealand, where they make their own version. In prime time, Ten has some big hits and some mild hits and then a lot of not much. Masterchef, Have You Been Paying Attention and Gogglebox all win their time slots. I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here is not as huge, but it's still a hit. The strength of those shows - particularly the game show HYBPA and Gogglebox - is that they have Ten stamped all over them.. they are very funny and cheap and irreverent (like a Japanese panel comedy game show) and the show just built and built from such a low base, but Ten stuck with it. And, now, in this era of downloads and streams and TV dying, these topical, funny, news-related comedy shows are proving to be what young people like to watch and Tweet about at the same time. So there is still hope for Ten. As for news, Ten is not in the same league as Seven and Nine, but, in reality, it abdicated this responsibility when it took its news to 5PM in 1992. For now, Eyewitness News is STILL their highest-rating program on many nights (or second-highest after another news program, The Project 7PM). The dilemma for Ten is if they cut their news operation further, they risk a massive drop in their 5-6PM audience. For example, a networked newscast from SKY (as some have speculated) would be a disaster. They will have to come up with a very good plan to both save money and keep their news strong in the early evening. Here is an example of 'Studio 10' changing gears and going into Breaking News mode for daytime coverage of the Manchester Bombing:

This has happened time and time again. They will come back - like they always do. My tip is they will reinvent themselves - again - and probably merge their news operations with FOXTEL to cut costs.

Just published by yours truly. Enjoy 'CNN' and 'NBC Today' as "interpreted" by comedy show Fast Forward (from my 1990 tapes. Anyone who remembers Desert Storm should get a kick out of them.) "Bobby Battista at the Center, Atlanter..." Bobbie discusses "smart bombs" with 'General Guthrie Phalanx' at Fort Kaboom, Twin Barrels, VA. Funny "anchor chat" sketch impersonating the NBC Today show. Classic... and close to the real thing! While we're here... one more (from another channel), a classic:

Just uploaded from tape: ITN and Thames News in 89 (I lived in London as an elementary school kid). TEN Morning News 1990 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=V3dSPeeXII8 and for what it's worth, C4 The Business Programme close
-
"Thames News" was probably the first news program I really liked as a kid. Here are some of my recordings from back then! They had a pretty "unique" news theme in '89! And you'd have to say that long-running Thames River ID (in your clip above) must be one of the all-time greats. For what it's worth, I was fascinated by the retro, minimalist, vaguely "Eastern Bloc" vibe I got from this as a primary school kid.. and their timeless ID in 1989 - elegant and stunning to this day. (and the great News at One)
-
These are among my favorite themes (from the top shelf labelled "epic") - and ones I grew up with from three continents. The third video was recorded by me (although the clip was appropriated by ManciniTV - who didn't acknowledge my video!) ITN Weekend and Overnight News 1989 This was more or less the first theme that I loved as a kid. (and their rather elegant .) TVQ Brisbane used an even more punchy version of the powerful Ten closer used elsewhere. Forgive the insufferable anchors, and TVQ really screwed that open timing; but the close is something! CNN Earlybird News. Apart from my original blurb for my , where I wrote: "A jazzy groove and a Southern feel for your early mornings on CNN in 1990. And that name is just so 'slow hand'! This program aired via Ten Newswatch in Australia"..... I can also add that I always heard a kind of Japanese vibe to this music, which perhaps lent it a kind of 'international', 'news coming in overnight from around the world' vibe..

Honolulu, HI: Awesome. No more words needed.. Another uber cool clip: Lastly, personally recorded from a hotel room while on vacation from Australia. Just uploaded: Another awesome clip - from NewsActive3.

Btw, that is a great satellite speed for '92 (no delay)! And, man, I loved that set! This is a short clip - and one of mine - but it shows just how stunning that set was.

Pleased for Robert!! Awesome.

That goes back to the 80s when commercial stations in Australia found US morning shows a great and topical way to fill a few hours of overnight programming in the first few years of 24 hour broadcasting. Because of the time difference, we could get quality network news from the US at 1 or 2 AM. You're right, Seven were the first to do it. But they actually aired CNN originally. Later, in the early 90s, 10 got exclusive access to CNN and carried it midnight to dawn. NBC Today aired for many years from about 1 AM on Seven. Despite airing in the graveyard shift, it gathered such a cult following that it was regularly sent up on our version of Saturday Night Live for years. The comedians' take on it was much the same as my first reaction on seeing it as a kid after living in England for some years. I had never seen news anchors do that much inane "happy chat". My dad was like "what the?!" but I loved it! It was just a whole other level of "anchor stardom". Yes, big name 'newsreaders' in England were paid big bucks and were household names, but there was a sense of formality and authority (that was never really repeated since). I loved the English anchors who were so professional and matter-of-fact (as you can see on my YouTube channel). The big "handover" of the alarm clock between Jane Pauley and Deborah Norville perfectly illustrated this bizarre netherworld of "TV anchorland" that the rest of the world grew to emulate later (Recorded on Seven affiliate near Sydney.) Another recorded on Seven.. (and damn.. Katie really fluffs that accent at the end! The 'inanity' level was, in fact, exaggerated because we used to receive that part of the 'Today Show' produced for stations without local news at :25 past the hour - the 'co-op' - where the cast would chat.. and chat.. and chat about any old thing. Of course, none of us in Australia realised that it wasn't really intended to air widely.. it was only meant for Flintstick, Wyoming and other such one-horse towns. We thought it was an actual part of the show where they return from commercials and literally talk about themselves for an entire block! Here's my 2 contributions to the co-op files.. again from Channel 7. You can see what I mean about the happy-chatting anchors that we were so unaccustomed to!

I just uploaded this. Katie Couric and Matt Lauer in Sydney for the Olympics. Recorded in Sydney on Channel 7 - what a great time! It's a little 'rough cuts' style. The clip comes from a DVD I made for friends years ago.. and I was running out of room on it! (Catch the open at 1:50)

I just uploaded this one. Eyewitness News (TEN10) weekend coverage of Sydney fires in '94. If interested, features some pretty stunning reporting from Damian Ryan in the center of a firestorm. He's now a veteran with 9. Includes edits (I was a kid always changing the channel!)

There is something about the really great news promos that can make for a stunning 30 seconds of television. Here are some personal recordings from the very "top shelf" - the first taped as a homesick young kid watching from the other side of the world, the second also incredible, and the third - the iconic "Who's Who of News" from Channel 9. Source: Dan Martin. Other versions of this long-running promo include , (taped by yours truly), and many localized versions from across the network and through the years on YouTube.

Yes, I sure do. From one of my tapes at home - this is good: As always in this thread - posted in the spirit of sharing some of my videos with an 'Americanized' connection. Appreciate it.
