  1. These are among my favorite themes (from the top shelf labelled "epic") - and ones I grew up with from three continents. The third video was recorded by me (although the clip was appropriated by ManciniTV - who didn't acknowledge my video!) ITN Weekend and Overnight News 1989 This was more or less the first theme that I loved as a kid. (and their rather elegant .) TVQ Brisbane used an even more punchy version of the powerful Ten closer used elsewhere. Forgive the insufferable anchors, and TVQ really screwed that open timing; but the close is something! CNN Earlybird News. Apart from my original blurb for my , where I wrote: "A jazzy groove and a Southern feel for your early mornings on CNN in 1990. And that name is just so 'slow hand'! This program aired via Ten Newswatch in Australia"..... I can also add that I always heard a kind of Japanese vibe to this music, which perhaps lent it a kind of 'international', 'news coming in overnight from around the world' vibe..
  2. Honolulu, HI: Awesome. No more words needed.. Another uber cool clip: Lastly, personally recorded from a hotel room while on vacation from Australia. Just uploaded: Another awesome clip - from NewsActive3.
  3. Btw, that is a great satellite speed for '92 (no delay)! And, man, I loved that set! This is a short clip - and one of mine - but it shows just how stunning that set was.
  4. Pleased for Robert!! Awesome.
  5. That goes back to the 80s when commercial stations in Australia found US morning shows a great and topical way to fill a few hours of overnight programming in the first few years of 24 hour broadcasting. Because of the time difference, we could get quality network news from the US at 1 or 2 AM. You're right, Seven were the first to do it. But they actually aired CNN originally. Later, in the early 90s, 10 got exclusive access to CNN and carried it midnight to dawn. NBC Today aired for many years from about 1 AM on Seven. Despite airing in the graveyard shift, it gathered such a cult following that it was regularly sent up on our version of Saturday Night Live for years. The comedians' take on it was much the same as my first reaction on seeing it as a kid after living in England for some years. I had never seen news anchors do that much inane "happy chat". My dad was like "what the?!" but I loved it! It was just a whole other level of "anchor stardom". Yes, big name 'newsreaders' in England were paid big bucks and were household names, but there was a sense of formality and authority (that was never really repeated since). I loved the English anchors who were so professional and matter-of-fact (as you can see on my YouTube channel). The big "handover" of the alarm clock between Jane Pauley and Deborah Norville perfectly illustrated this bizarre netherworld of "TV anchorland" that the rest of the world grew to emulate later (Recorded on Seven affiliate near Sydney.) Another recorded on Seven.. (and damn.. Katie really fluffs that accent at the end! The 'inanity' level was, in fact, exaggerated because we used to receive that part of the 'Today Show' produced for stations without local news at :25 past the hour - the 'co-op' - where the cast would chat.. and chat.. and chat about any old thing. Of course, none of us in Australia realised that it wasn't really intended to air widely.. it was only meant for Flintstick, Wyoming and other such one-horse towns. We thought it was an actual part of the show where they return from commercials and literally talk about themselves for an entire block! Here's my 2 contributions to the co-op files.. again from Channel 7. You can see what I mean about the happy-chatting anchors that we were so unaccustomed to!
  6. I just uploaded this. Katie Couric and Matt Lauer in Sydney for the Olympics. Recorded in Sydney on Channel 7 - what a great time! It's a little 'rough cuts' style. The clip comes from a DVD I made for friends years ago.. and I was running out of room on it! (Catch the open at 1:50)
  7. I just uploaded this one. Eyewitness News (TEN10) weekend coverage of Sydney fires in '94. If interested, features some pretty stunning reporting from Damian Ryan in the center of a firestorm. He's now a veteran with 9. Includes edits (I was a kid always changing the channel!)

  9. I remember watching this bit of TV nostalgia on the 1990 Logies on Ten:
  10. There is something about the really great news promos that can make for a stunning 30 seconds of television. Here are some personal recordings from the very "top shelf" - the first taped as a homesick young kid watching from the other side of the world, the second also incredible, and the third - the iconic "Who's Who of News" from Channel 9. Source: Dan Martin. Other versions of this long-running promo include , (taped by yours truly), and many localized versions from across the network and through the years on YouTube.
  11. Just uploaded a minute ago; from VHS
  12. Yes, I sure do. From one of my tapes at home - this is good: As always in this thread - posted in the spirit of sharing some of my videos with an 'Americanized' connection. Appreciate it.
  13. Ten Capital News - Canberra. Good sample from Australia's capital, when Ten was #1. From the anchor's showreel. Catch the news open @1:10
  14. TVQ Brisbane - NBC, BBC and CNN all together in one promo. (1993)

  18. Recorded by yours truly: Nine News Bumper NBC Today on 7 Eyewitness News Sydney
  19. I've added a few more observations on some of my YouTube blurbs - for anyone interested.: Carol Barnes presents from London, with Michael Nicholson in Washington and James Mates in Tokyo. The 'Daily' was a bit of a gift for news fans - with its classy graphics, newsy feel and wonderfully business-like and utilitarian set. Incidentally, it was also basically unheard of at the time for news opens to feature 'anchor talent' shots in Britain. ---- ITN contributed World News on the half-hour on Channel 4's intelligent morning programme 'The Channel 4 Daily' in 1989. The bulletins featured Carol Barnes in London, Michael Nicholson in Washington and James Mates in Tokyo. Carol Barnes presents Channel 4's morning programme from ITN London. The 'Daily' was a very newsy sort of breakfast show - and with all the different themes, segments and stylish graphics, it was a bit of a gift for news junkies. The set was also wonderfully austere and business-like. Another 'important' discussion to fill the local news block. With Ann Curry, Al Roker and co. Note: The legendary co-op segment - where they talked (..and talked) about anything and everything, and which became easy fodder for lampooning by the talented impersonators of 'Fast Forward' - used to air in Australia through the '90s as part of Seven's re-broadcast of 'Today' in the overnight hours. Source: Channel 7 Sydney, Australia ITV's "Just the Way You Are" promo, celebrating the many channels across Britain making up the ITV network. This leads into ITN's 'News at Ten' with Alastair Burnet and Alastair Stewart. Incidentally, it was extremely rare (or almost unheard of) back then for British TV networks to present themselves in this kind of "big song and dance" way, common to US broadcasters at the time - and I believe this promo was more a statement by ITV to draw attention to its positives ahead of proposed changes in broadcasting legislation. Extraordinary "Year in Review" closing package compiled by videotape editor James Hamilton using early 90's manual videotape technology. Sandra Sully and Ron Wilson close the year highlighting the best television news pictures for "the year that we had to have" - 1991. Major international news events included the War in the Gulf, Dissolution of the Soviet Union, the eruption of Mount Pinatubo, Crisis in East Timor and the Strathfield Massacre. Note: Includes a portion of National Nine News with Ian Ross. Source: TEN Eyewitness News Sydney at 6:00pm
  20. I prefer this version (which has a better 'end', among other things, and which is the same as my clip, which has been uploaded to YouTube by a friend of mine):
  21. Some UK classics: ITV Granada's World in Action Weekend World The London Programme (taped by yours truly) BBC Newsnight
  22. Another 5 classics from here. Nightline Aust. - George Donikian '89 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_G6Qe2qQAmg TEN Sydney Weekends in '87 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opaNa9a_spE Seven's CNN Overnight 1985 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXmjaW_gVFE The first Nine 'Shout' promo, a year before their even bigger one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3byNEDBpGM Nine Brisbane: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aG-Ie1L7W-4 I hope you don't mind my posting these clips. I want to post only the best (in my opinion), and most relevant Australian clips (in a US context) here.
  23. Recorded by yours truly: Bryant, Katie and Tom's Seven News Promo TODAY's Dream Sequence The 'co-op'!
  24. Enhanced the video and audio for some of my Hawaii videos. Enjoy. News 4 at 5 - includes extended version of 'The Visionary' news theme: Channel 2 Surf theme: KHNL News 8 Joe!
  25. NBN3 News Newcastle - 100 miles north of Sydney, recorded by yours truly as a young kid on a family vacation Ray Dinneen and Tracey Reid anchor a one-hour 6PM news at powerhouse station NBN - one of the best local newscasts you'll see in regional Australia. The station ID launches seamlessly into the news open, thanks to some clever integration with the news theme.
