The newscast probably followed Monday Night Football, Monday Night Baseball, or one of the MLB League Championship Series that ABC televised in 1982. I think it was most likely baseball since MNF began at 8PM CT.
That sounds like the most logical explanation!

Why would that one come on @ 10:45?WLS, Chicago; 10 p.m. -- I'm sorry, 10:45 p.m., 1982:

The current ABC7 EWN @ WLS: is it like EWN was before there, or is it different (outside, of course, of the title being ABC7 EWN now)?

Never saw this before-- this was KABC in L.A. back in July of '83 (7/20/83, to be exact)-- back when I was 2 years old. This was, IINM, back when KABC EWN (as were a lot of ABC network programs) was done from the ABC Television Center (a.k.a. The Prospect Studios).

Go to the 1:59 mark. You'll see an opening from WAAY in Huntsville, AL that for the longest time, we only heard in an audio clip. It's the first opening of the then-new 31 Eyewitness News from 6/12/79. I always wondered what this looked like, as a matter of fact.

There is something I did not know about WAFF Channel 48 (NBC in Huntsville, AL). Go to the 21:05 mark of Part 107 of NewsActive3's openings and promos, and you will find (in fact, a lot of this clip shows it) that Channel 48 had NBC's 70's Trapezoidal N, even in 1981 (on its opening and on its ID). I thought that 48 would have converted its ID to have the Proud N with it.

[/yt]WLS EWN full 6 P.M. edition, April 11, 1983 (Main story: the Chicago election of that year). I'll never forget it (from seeing the opening from The 80s TV Theme SuperSite all those years ago) how the announcer opened the newscast:
"This is Eyewitness News with Joel Daly, Dick Johnson for Fahey Flynn, Dr. Dave Iser's weather, Al Lerner on sports, and the Eyewitness News team."
Don't know if I spelled that weatherman's name right, but that's how I remember hearing it.

If you want to talk lame opening and lame station, try WYFF today. All dayparts are awful, but the morning and noon openings are the worst, and that female announcer in the morning and at noon doesn't help one bit. Worse yet, at commercial breaks, they repeat one part of the music over and over and over again. Stupid!

NBC "NFL '81" pregame opening (this one has much improved video quality from a similar clip of the same opening; as such, it is entirely more lifelike).

That one I really enjoyed! It was great finally to see what this opening looked like after hearing the audio of it for so long.

Apparently KDFW in Dallas was not the only one to call themselves News 4 Texas, as this Port Arthur station's 1998 opening proves.
