  1. The start of 24/7 broadcasting after CNN launched in 1980: This time, it was on local network affiliates. Meaning NBC affiliates carried Overnight, CBS News aired Nightwatch (now CBS Overnight News) and they even had the option to include CNN Headline News in their overnight lineup (ABC affiliates included after Nightline). Early Risers Delight: this was for people who don't have the luxury of watching the CBS Morning News, ABC's Good Morning America or NBC's Today Show. They need to be right out the door to beat the morning rush. CBS Early Morning News, ABC's World News This Morning and NBC Early Today + local morning news = what early risers needed before getting to work or school on time. ABC Late Night was never the same since NIGHTLINE Entered the Picture: Pre-1980 Consisted of wide world of entertainment, reruns of ABC primetime shows and movie of the week. Nightline with Ted Koppel launched in March 1980, giving ABC affiliates a post-late news alternative to Johnny Carson, who was a really big deal at rival NBC at that time. And who knew that Jeff Greenfield would join ABC News later on, and the same person he interviewed (Roone Arledge) would be his boss?
  2. I was thinking the same thing. Mr. NBC voicing a news open for and ABC O&O? Dark should be voicing a news open for rival station KRON 4, which was indeed the NBC affiliate at the time. Shouldn't it be Mr. ABC himself Ernie Anderson doing the voiceover for THIS KGO open? I heard Anderson's voice in the other two other opens using the rare KGO theme http://www.newsmusicsearcharchive.com/#3,1,378
  3. A commercial station/network affiliate owned by a University? AWESOME! Usually, most colleges and universities own PBS member stations. But owning a commercial station and network affiliate? KICK-ASS! IMO, the anchors and reporters of tomorrow get their start today (at NBC 8 KOMU) while they're still in college (at the University of Missouri, which KOMU is owned by). I'm sure that's the case at two other college-owned commercial station: WVUA Channel 23 in Tuscaloosa Alabama (owned by University of Alabama) and fellow NBC affiliate WNDU Channel 16 in South Bend, Indiana (owned by Notre Dame University until 1998). You can say that it's every student's First Broadcasting Job WHILE IN COLLEGE instead of after.
  4. WJBK 2 Together with the Look of Detroit WPIX 11 Alive with the Look of New York I wonder if these were Peters Productions doing. Because # Alive and # Together seem like concepts conceived by Peters Productions. As for WPIX version, where does the Marketing Deli fit into all this?
  5. I miss those days when TV stations did the humorous compare/contrast promos (counting THIS promo for ABC7 Detroit). WXYZ threw in a little humor (great Pinocchio reference) to illustrate what rival stations claim to be and what others say they do. In other words, how other stations talk the talk. Plus, throwing in truthful clips to demonstrate how ABC 7 Action News walks the walk. Another ABC station did the same kind of promos in the 80s, as shown in the first few clips from the YouTube channel of former sportscaster Ron Futrell of ABC13 Las Vegas
  6. Let's not forget Dan Dean also did news themes for KIRO (CBS 7) and KOMO ABC 4). What Jerome Gilmer was for Denver and KCNC, Dan Dean was for Seattle and all three major network affiliates. In-town composers who did theme music for local news themes and image packages in the same city.
  7. Staying on topic of the 25th anniversary of the switch, the NBC peacock flew from KCNC to KUSA, of course. As for KCNC being with CBS...what was the FIRST CBS program of the day? On KCNC's First Day as a CBS affiliate? What Else? Sunday Morning from CBS News...hosted by Charles Osgood (at that time). Then-entertainment reporter Greg Moody (aka Critic at Large) gave his take on the switch for his station. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmBgdv4sL10
  8. Now I know who did the graphics and animation for ALL the TEGNA (formerly Gannett) stations...Linda Kane!
  9. WALA using THEIR OWN Take on the NBC News 1983 Graphics Package for the open and close. Not to mention using the NBC Nightly News electronic theme from that time period. WALA is now FOX 10, while NBC is at WPMI 15 (aka NBC 15)
  10. KCOP went off the air for 15 MINUTES and then came back on? WOW! The Los Angeles station must've done the technical/transmitting side like today's computers. You know, REBOOT! Turn it off, wait a few minutes (in this case 15 Minutes), and then turn it back on again. But then again, KCOP wasn't the only station that did the computer reboot-style sign off/sign on. Look at CBS-owned WCBS New York. CBS 2 signed off at 5:00am, and then, they returned to the air at 6:00am. TWO OF THE SHORTEST SIGN OFFS/SIGN ONS EVER!!!! Usually, stations used to sign-off anytime between midnight and 2am, and then, come back to the air at like 6:00am!
  11. Man, who could forget what happened in Denver 25 YEARS AGO? FALL 1995...That was the time Mile High City Television (matter of fact TV in ALL of Colorado) had changed forever. 9 became 4 of course. As you see here, NBC had moved from KCNC to KUSA. 4 became 7, because CBS moved from KMGH to KCNC. 7 became 9 because ABC moved from KUSA to KMGH. Indeed it was confusing, but it grew on some of us. Along with the switch came changes in partner stations, especially in Colorado Springs. KOAA was a partner station to KCNC, seeing that they were both NBC affiliates. After the switch KOAA's partner station became KUSA. KRDO was partner station to KUSA, because both were ABC affiliates. But KRDO's partner station became KMGH and it still is today. KKTV and KMGH were partner stations (both were CBS affiliates), but now, KKTV's partner station is KCNC. See how the BIG SWITCH not only affected Denver stations? ALL of Colorado TV changed forever
  12. Starting in like 1983, PAUL Magers picked up where his brother Ron left off in the Twin Cities. Meaning that, after Ron left KSTP for Chicago in 1981, his brother Paul came to Minneapolis/St. Paul in 1983 to anchor at rival KARE 11 (WTCN at the time). When it came to giving the Twin Cities the news every night, Paul filled the void that Ron left. Tom Rhyther (sports) and Barry Zevan (weather) couldn't get enough of the Magers brothers in the Twin Cities. After they worked with one brother at one station (Ron at KSTP in the 70s), they went to work with another brother at another station (Paul at WTCN/KARE).

  14. Pisses me off to no end. I loved Sloan's channel, and I too am worried that NewsActive3's channel might be taken down. I love old school newscasts, promos, theme music, as the next homie. I especially saw some of Denver's content from 1992 (KUSA, KCNC and KWGN). I'll start cussing up a storm if something happens to old school TV news content on YouTube. Moreover, seeing these promos and newscasts again brings back memories, even for me as a kid in the 80s loving newscasts.
  15. hour long version of NewsNation...That's what I said! I said it before and I'll say it again. How about an hour-long version of NewsNation? Or, even a half-hour version? Air that version on Nexstar-owned FOX, CW and MNTV affiliates that DON'T HAVE a national nightly newscast. It would be like the days of the Independent Network News. Produced by WPIX New York, and distributed to independent stations without a national newscast, even indies owned by Tribune back then.
  16. FOX31 KDVR is still part of the pool, along with the others (ABC7 KMGH, CBS4 KCNC, CW2 KWGN and NBC9 KUSA). Oh, and BTW, how much DOES it cost for a TV station to have its own helicopter? I'm talking purchase of the chopper, operating costs and maintenance (fuel, repairs, etc). I think a Bell JetRanger costs $1 million to buy (click here), and the Eurocopter AS350 costs around $2.4 million (click here) And within a day, how many hours does it take for a chopper to be in the air? For traffic reports, breaking news, whatever?
  17. Chopper sharing with some or all stations in one market...that is nothing new. Where I'm at (Denver), one news helicopter is used by ALL Denver stations. KWGN calls itself SKY 2, CBS 4 still calls itself Copter 4, KUSA still calls itself Sky 9...all despite all stations using ONE, and ONLY ONE, blue-colored news helicopter. What a depressing story of our times. WPXI NBC 11 in Pittsburgh is not alone in the grief, according to the comments on the instagram post. Oh, how the competitive edge, uniqueness and glory days of TV news is gone forever.
  18. NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN News Intros from KNBC during its NEWS 4 LA days...AND WITH PRISTINE QUALITY!!!!
  19. Yes it is! It's called the CBS-AM package, which KRDO was using in 1994 with (a) a lipstick makeover of the old set and (b) graphics. By this time in 1995, KRDO had just gotten a new set (with a new news open and graphics to go along with it). KRDO was still using the CBS-AM package, they just changed the cuts to reflect the new set in 1995. One year later in 1996, KRDO kept the 1995 news open, but they switched to another Gari theme, which was Image News, first used by Hearst stations.
  20. One of my favorite news themes is the KPRC NBC2 Custom Package from Toby Arnold and Associates. NBC2 in Houston used that theme from 1988 until 1992. In this broadcast of Channel 2 News Nightcast from 1989, we'll get to hear the almost complete closing theme at the 24:48 mark Then for the 6pm newscast from 1990, we get to hear a different closing theme at the 28:29 mark, which is part of the KPRC custom news theme package
  21. Ahhh, the CNN Headline News I remember. It was where America could watch a 30-minute national newscast every half hour 24/7. World and National news that was ready when WE were. While we were having breakfast, on our lunch break, after dinner, before bed, whenever! We knew what was going on (across the country and around the world) every chance we got during the day EVERY DAY. That's just not the case anymore
  22. Talk about FOX ATTITUDE right there...especially in the news open. Feels like WSVN up in here throughout the show!
  23. at the 5:52 mark - we get to hear the near-complete closing theme, which was part of the KIRO news theme package done locally by the Seattle Symphony. It was almost like listening to the theme from the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather; it had a thunderous, pounding orchestral sound. In My Opinion, News Outside the Box was the XFL of local newscast. I mean, it was a brilliant, totally badass idea, but unfortunately, it never caught on with the Seattle news audience.
  24. David Ono at KOVR, while Ellen Leyva (then Elena Leyva) was at rival KXTV I didn't know these two were competing against each other in Sacramento BEFORE heading to Los Angeles to anchor together at ABC 7 Eyewitness News
  25. That's John Hook before moving across Arizona to do FOX 10 News in Phoenix
