  1. When the KUSA promo (Colorado USA...KUSA) came out, Channel 9 was still using 9 Country/11 Country, as was sister station Channel 11 in Twin Cities (WTCN/WUSA/KARE). I don't think that promo song went with the 9 Country/11 Country news theme music package. Furthermore, who composed 9 Country/11 Country remains a mystery.
  2. Hey, that sound awfully familiar. That's the same promo music used by KUSA in Denver during its ABC affiliate years (left for NBC in 1995). It's slogan is Colorado USA...KUSA
  3. CNN had TWO husband/wife anchor teams: - Dave Walker and Lois Hart (who returned to northern California to anchor at KCRA) - Chris Curle and Don Farmer (who stayed in Atlanta to anchor at WSB ABC 2) Of course, Dave Walker and Lois Hart was the first team to kick things off on June 1, 1980. Throughout the first hour, the second team Curle and Farmer explained how CNN worked.
  4. Curle's husband Don Farmer co-anchored with Monica Kaufman at night. Curle and Farmer went to WSB ABC 2 after their stint at CNN across town. These two lovebirds were part of the network's first news team since CNN's inception in 1980.
  5. I didn't know KPNX (then KTAR at the time) also used the ALIVE branding (aka 12 ALIVE). I'm guessing that was part of the Combined Communications Corporation/Gannett thingy, along with WLKY Louisville (32 ALIVE), KOCO Oklahoma City (5 ALIVE) and of course WXIA Atlanta (11 ALIVE and STILL IS to this day).
  6. I didn't know Jineane Ford anchored in Tampa Bay before heading off to Phoenix to anchor at KPNX NBC 12
  7. This soundtrack really IS a treat. Thank you for posting. The same people that did news theme music/promo packages for Gannett/Combined Communications stations like WXIA Atlanta, WLKY Louisville (now with Hearst), KOCO Oklahoma City (also with Hearst) and even here in Denver at KUSA (then KBTV). As far as that WJKW song TV8 The Winners is concerned, I got to hear the VOCAL version of the NewsCenter8 close (at 4:34 in the clip Peters Productions Video Sound Track).
  8. WSVN wasn't the only one during the 1980s. Here in Denver, KCNC Channel 4 had its share too. That Denver station too had its NewsCenter circle channel number branding because KCNC's newscasts was branded NewsCenter 4. Not to mention KCNC also used All the News by TM productions. On top of both factors, both stations were NBC affiliates back in the day before heading off to other networks. WSVN switched from NBC to FOX in 1989, and it was the start of FOX attitude for local newscasts on other FOX affiliates. KCNC switched from NBC to CBS in 1995 Therefore, WSVN and KCNC had three things in common: the NewsCenter circle logo branding, the use of All The News by TM, and they were both NBC affiliates during that time. The only difference is this. KCNC was owned by NBC's parent company GE, and then by the network itself. Now, it's a CBS O&O station in the Mile High City. As for WSVN, it was (and still is) locally owned by Ed Ansin's Miami-based Sunbeam Television.
  9. The modernized mixout of the Jennings theme is in the open/close
  10. YES! YES! YEEEEEEAAAASSSSS!!!! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! For bringing back that familiar melody (with the ABC News signature of course) from the Peter Jennings era! AND, for getting rid of that Damn Hans Zimmer crap you used since 2012, when Diane Sawyer was at the helm. What a relief and a blessing to hear that Score Productions/Edd Kalehoff theme again.
  11. Here's ANOTHER WRAL promo with the VTS Place to Be/CBS We've Got the Touch combo mix promo. Indeed, a kick ass combo for WRAL. Taking elements from the CBS 1985-86 promo, and incorporating them into VTS The Place to Be package. LOVE IT! As you saw, WRAL wasn't the only station with a promo, which had a kick-ass combo mix of a news theme package (The Place to Be by VTS) with a network promo theme (CBS's 3rd and final season fo We've Got the Touch). Take a look at the promo for the Dallas NBC O&O station KXAS. It too had a combo mix of (a) Wall to Wall News by Stephen Arnold with (b) NBC's 1984-85 campaign Let's All Be There.
  12. What an awesome way to commemorate CNN'S 40TH ANNIVERSARY (1980-2020)!!!!! The FIRST 24-hour cable channel devoted to news. My, my, my! The network has indeed come a long way since the first 3-hours in 1980 anchored by Sacramento's husband/wife team Dave Walker and Lois Hart
  13. WHAT A BLAST TO LISTEN TO!!!! Finally got to hear the clean, full-length cuts of the KTXL news theme package, which was also used in 1982 on WRAL Raleigh/Durham/Fayetteville, North Carolina (during its ABC affiliate days) and in the late 80s on KRDO ABC13 in Colorado Springs/Pueblo
  14. The World Premiere of NBC NIGHTLY NEWS from August 3, 1970. When Chet Huntley left, and John Chancellor took his place, David Brinkley stuck around. Along with the retirement of Huntley came (a) the end of the Huntley/Brinkley Report and (b) the name change to what is now NBC Nightly News. Many anchors have come and gone: Roger Mudd, Tom Brokaw, Brian Williams, and now, Lester Holt at the helm as the first African-American sole anchor of a network evening newscast. The NBC Nightly News name is still going strong 50 YEARS LATER. Hey, there should be an anniversary this year.
  15. When I saw the WDBJ news open, that music sounded awfully familiar. That was the music heard on KVUE ABC24 Action News in Austin, Texas. That was in 1978. I didn't know that music was part of the TuesdayB news theme music package.
  16. SEPTEMBER 9, 1985 - The Debut of the NEW and IMPROVED NBC News, Starting with Nightly News with Tom Brokaw. It had the Statue of Liberty opening and closing. It had the anchor desk with newsroom in the background. That was where Brokaw delivered the day's news, while the working behind-the-scenes crew was seen in the background. And, of course, this was also the WORLD PREMIERE of the longest-running theme music in the history of NBC News. The start of something badass that lasted 35 years. I'm talking about The Mission Theme from NBC News by John Williams. The music is still going strong today with brothaman Lester Holt at the helm (Holt the first African-American to be sole anchor of a network evening newscast). What a first night it was for NBC News.
  17. From Friday night, September 2, 1983. The LAST 30-minute MacNeil/Lehrer report with that groovy funky Bernard Hoffer theme (wah-wah guitar, bongo drums, etc) From the following Monday night, September 5, 1983. The FIRST Hour-Long MacNeil/Lehrer NEWSHOUR with the updated, more symphonic Bernard Hoffer theme (done by an orchestra).
  18. Personally, I love John Young's V/O work. From his days at TBS, to the two Nashville stations, and every market in between, his voiceover work provides power and gravitas. As much awesomeness and class as the greats: Danny Dark (NBC), Ernie Anderson (ABC) and Don LaFontaine (movie trailers, CBS, UPN, FOX and NBC). So sad that he is being replaced by other voiceover talent.
  19. and that microwave yagi antenna on a cylinder gyroscope...can it send an HD signal back to the station? Even a LIVE HD Signal? If so, it'll be PREFECT between the skids of low-priced, high quality choppers (Rotorway A600, Cabri G2, Skyrider SKY, CH 77 Ranabot Turbo, Robinson R22, and EVEN the Schweitzer 300)
  20. You mean THIS white cylinder thingy between the skids? Where it can send an HD signal back to the station? Even a LIVE HD Signal?
  21. Yes there is. With HD Wireless Camera Solution (CLICK HERE). As you can see with the pictures below, it's perfect for choppers like Rotorway A600, Cabri G2, Skyrider SKY, CH 77 Ranabot Turbo, Robinson R22, and EVEN the Schweitzer 300 helicopter
  22. LOVE THIS version of the closing cut to Newswire, where it plays the NBC Chimes two times
  23. I have been watching the video on Top 10 piston engine helicopters altitude performance, and after looking at these LOW-PRICED helicopters, I can see it being used as news helicopters bearing the station logo I saw the following choppers with potential for bearing a station logo: Rotorway A600, Cabri G2, Skyrider SKY, CH 77 Ranabot Turbo, Robinson R22, and EVEN the Schweitzer 300 helicopter. That Schweizter 300 was used at stations like KTVT Dallas/Ft. Worth, KPIX San Francisco, KTHV Little Rock and WAFF 48 Huntsville, Alabama (seen in the promo below) As long as it can bear a station logo, I see those choppers as a low-cost alternative to the expensive Bell JetRanger and Eurocopter A350
  24. In my city - Denver, Colorado - all five stations share one helicopter. They don't have their own choppers like they used to. KUSA had their own chopper called SKY9. At KCNC CBS4, it was Copter 4 piloted by Mike Silva. AirTracker7 was the helicopter for KMGH. When KDVR opened their news department, they had a helicopter called SkyFox. KWGN had no chopper. I know helicopters are expensive. The Bell JetRanger costs $1 million, while the EuroCopter Airbus A350 costs $2 million, plus factor in the high operating costs.
  25. Here's something interesting and fun to watch. The full-length episode of CBS News Up to the Minute. No, not the overnight newscast that came (a) after CBS News Nightwatch and (b) before CBS Overnight News. Not the Up to the Minute you're thinking of. This was the 1981 SHOW, Monday thru Friday afternoons, where it was hosted by the same men who brought us 60 Minutes (Mike Wallace, Ed Bradley, Morley Safer and Harry Reasoner). It was a weekday afternoon news program - an early fringe deal - that came on after the CBS soaps and before the early news at like 5:00pm. PLUS, there's theme music to the show. Seeing that Up to the Minute was hosted by the 60 Minutes anchormen, the music was MUCH different from the stopwatch sound effect we're used to hearing on 60 Minutes every Sunday.
