It's a Sunset 39!

Whoaaaaaaaa. Didn't see that coming. For context:
Â
Â
I'm not gonna derail this thread, but....... Wow.
Â
Meanwhile, speaking of Nashville... Here's some pretty high-profile broadcast work from 1986. TV Worth Watching, anyone?
Â
-
The WLKY close is from an image package called "Looking Better all the Time" that apparently originated with WBTV Charlotte in 1983, but we know literally nothing else. KAMR also used this theme.
-
So this turned up on YouTube and the uploader wasn't sure what it was:
Â
Â
A radio program? Part of a special? No, it's a 30-minute vinyl record! It's not from 1988 but rather 1991 (though it appears the idea originated around 1989).
Â
The Taking Pride In...series was actually something sold to a whole bunch of TV and radio stations. (A list is at the end of this) It was produced by Impact Broadcast Marketing, a Nashville shop. According to this 2014 article on the KREM version (which already was online), apparently the lyrics were nearly the same for each market (with two songs being altered) — just the narration changed.
Â
Found a mention of it on this site:
Â
QuoteThis is an odd little album, with a mildly intriguing back story... Impact Broadcast was a marketing firm based in Nashville that created a series of vinyl LPs, circa 1989-91, that were made up to look like locally-produced regional boosterism projects. All of the albums had the exact same music on them, generic, prefab songs with vague lyrics about "your town," etc., and purposefully indeterminate pop-country (which is it??) arrangements with slick, bland, contemporary production. Two of these tracks were adapted on each album to represent the individual clients, thus "Taking Pride In Portland" could become "Taking Pride In Topeka" at the drop of a hat. Likewise, many tracks feature individualized recitations that actually do reflect the town in question, albeit through rose-colored lenses. In this case, it's local TV anchor Ron Harbaugh who intones about the glories of the Kansas capitol... Impact usually partnered with a local TV or radio station, and presumably got their staff to round up financial backers: the Topeka album was sponsored by the Fairlawn Mall, TJ Maxx, and other Topeka businesses... Sadly, the Nashville studio musicians aren't credited, although many of the Taking Pride albums list a Linda Mayhew as their "creative consultant," and it's possible that she was the female vocalist featured on all the songs... Regardless, the folks at Impact Broadcast Marketing definitely had a lot of hustle, and managed to sign up several dozen clients during their short run as cookie-cutter civic cheerleaders. Other cities include: Ashville, Omaha, Peoria, Portland, Spartanburg, Spokane... you get the idea. Some albums are dedicated to entire states or regions: Central Florida, West Michigan, the state of Nevada... but one would assume these were less high-status than the folks who paid for just their own city to be feted on vinyl. This disc from Topeka is the only one I'm going to review (I got it for a dollar at a combination gun shop-antique store in Ottawa, Kansas) but if anyone wanted to send me a copy of Taking Pride In Austin, I wouldn't complain...

Don't normally squeeze something like this in here, but a promo from the Australian half of the Adelaide/Austin news anchor exchange in 1986:

Â
(As a note for people who didn't realize, including me: the full KTVV newscast we have is from a second trip Fulwood did to Austin later that year, not the straight up exchange that occurred in May)

TServo2049 actually talked with Byrne in 2014, but he did ask me not to share the information he told me with the public. Unfortunately much of what was said has not circulated publicly since.
Â
KMOL '79 is also his work (he did a total of 3 to 4 themes) as is WAGA '79 (which the NMSA has since incorrectly lumped into X Belongs as sample 3). Not everything Hayes did had Byrne's music.

Ooh, even some early 2000s KTVA:

Â
This guy has had a LOT of career stops (there's also WAAY, KIVI and KRGV on his channel!).

Yep, and I didn't see that. Oops. (The April '82 videos weren't up when you posted.) Removing the ones you posted.Â

This channel's adding WALA material and it's a positive treasure trove.

News film as old as Camille:

There are 6 and 10pm newscasts from April 1982 (before the fall '82 theme change):

Looks like Brad Harvey did main news and weather, and Dale Witte was on sports (how many stations these days, if any, have the main anchor also doing weather?).
Â
Not many! Kari Lake at KSAZ has spot filled in at times when necessary, but...that's spot duty.
Â
KOLR weather and close from 1986 with the unique "The Quest" theme music they used at the time (and uploaded by Ted Keller himself):

WIS didn't have a 6:00 newscast until the Gulf War, I believe, when they started "6:00 Carolina".
Â
Can't say I've heard this exact cut of Tuesday WWL before:

Clayton Vaughn in New Jersey?!?!
Â
Yup!
Â
New Jersey Nightly News had just begun airing that May, and Vaughn left KOTV to help start it. He decided to return to KOTV in September 1979, stating, "I have not assimilated well with this part of the country. I just miss Oklahoma and the Southwest. People tend to be friendlier and more open there."

No opens but there's a KTVL Tuesday2 bump and KOBI apparently was using the NBC '83 Let's All Be There pack in 1987... There's also KOTI material in there!
-
No news but KXLY dumped a bunch of early 90s and later news specials onto its YT today. Here's one:

I am not for sure about this, but I do know that the music in the WTVG open may have also been used by KOLN/KGIN in Lincoln/Grand Island, Nebraska in the mid 1980s. You can watch this video at 10:28 and hear that WTVG music being used in a news close that aired during 10/11's first late news of New Year's Day 1985.Â
It's 4 Sure—ahem, no, it's for real.
Â
KOLN is ALSO on the Peters client list. They debuted the 10/11 Strong moniker in 1977 with this ad, which is pretty darn Peters-y.
Â

It's the WTVG Noon Report for September 18, 1981:
Â
Â
If you like news music, this is a 🌩 moment: it suggests a potentially different history for WTVG. Clearly this music went with the "13 Strong" theme — the ident has the same three note signature.
Â
13 Strong debuted when WTVG was WSPD-TV, either in early 1977 or very late 1976. WSPD-TV is listed as a Peters Productions client. Did this music come from them...and from then?

Y'all want some more...Canadian news? Well, there's a lot of it in this video, which includes opens and partial shows from CBC, CTV and Global News in Saskatoon. At 1:05:00 is the Global open using Total News, which appears to actually be February 1999 (the NMSA doesn't have a sample for CFSK):

It's a really cool logo! But it's no faux throwback. Got this higher-res version:

It seems the first video with this logo was uploaded March 30.

Guessing 1977 based on the story. Harry Hill was elected in 1976.
