  1. After all the Belo stations stop using it, KTVK, KSNB/KHAS, and WMBB will be left. Of those stations it's not likely that KTVK (ownership change/realignment) or WMBB (under Nexstar) stay with the package.
  2. KGET in 1990. This is the Otis Conner WXII/WROC theme in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8D-AK5XEh6U This is interesting for the theme. I believe this is the oldest clip with this theme. WROC was using something else in 1991. WXII was still using its last Otis Conner package, the Wall to Wall News remix (along with the best TVbD knockoff graphics ever made—what a treat indeed, a knockoff design and knockoff music). In 1992 KTXS still had a different theme, and who knows what WITN was doing. Of course, the non-TV news theme that pointed us to Otis Conner, the KCBS San Francisco News and More radio package, dates to 1988.
  3. Posted without comment, from our friends at the Baltimore Sun:
  4. KDBC and KFOX will be moving into an office building on the west side of El Paso, says FTVLive. For the CBS outlet this means a move away from the space allotted to it at KTSM, though on-air talent will be changing for KDBC: "In addition, Sinclair is buying its two El Paso stations new live trucks and updating the stations’ graphics, including a new logo for KDBC. Hayes says KDBC on-air talent like longtime weathercaster Robert Bettes remain under contract with KTSM."
  5. On CBS, I think that is correct. KPHO has to time-shift programs off the satellite and during football season Sunday night shows are pockmarked with the (redundant) "Eye-lerts".
  6. They weren't the only ones. Off the top of my head, WTVC and WLBT did it too. WISH's 90s look particularly after ditching First News is one of my personal favorites. "The Best Gets Better" indeed!
  7. It's aired at 4:30 (when KNXV had it) and in the 7:00 hour on KTVK now (which IIRC was where it was when KTVK had it in the late 90s/early 2000s). Phoenix is probably the only market in the middle of the country where Wheel and Jeopardy air at 7/7:30.
  8. ATV (Atlantic Canada) "Live at 5", 1994. The station had used The News Image in prior years: The 1995 date is correct for the KMTV newscast. That's the second KMTV news open spotted in 48 hours. —— https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsp02_FHw8k Japan "NNN News Plus 1" from August 15, 1991. Bilingual newscast with Japanese audio left channel and English audio right channel (!). The top story, a remembrance of the dead in World War II. And some CNN Japan from 1989 (also partly bilingual but not like the NNN newscast — I think this is actually a "let's learn English" news program!!!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qH-2kOyH8mI
  9. The chopper share itself is 3, 5 and 12. I've been wondering for some time since the acquisition if 12 will break off either to join the 10/15 chopper share or to get its own. Keep in mind that in Phoenix a chopper share isn't just an economic move it's also a reminder of how having too many choppers led to four people's deaths.
  10. Bruce is back on TV in Phoenix! Bruce Haffner will return to channels 3 (and 5) beginning in October. Which begs the question: what the heck happened when he left channel 3 earlier this year as the sale was pending?
  11. KOLN/KGIN 1988 with and . Note the similarity to WOKR from around the same time—the two were briefly sisters under Gillett in the 1980s.
  12. Wow, I've found a lot. Some international material too but it's worth it. "New York Views" open, 1990. Was this WPIX? The theme sounds a lot like Michael Karp: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8MyE5D8fT0 Another example of the Nine Network with the CBS news ticker theme for news flashes, this time from 1991: (of course, I spotted this theme in use in 1997!!!) KHNL's news from February 1996: Another WKY News Can, this time with footage of people working in the station from 1958 after it had just won an RTNDA award: HTV Wales from 1989 with a pretty solid news theme:
  13. It might just be the worst weather promo in TV history, no other comment included: And from the same year, the oldest Omaha open I've ever seen. KMTV with Production Music: Energy:
  14. A KNXV story from early 1995: Presidents' Day! (Watch for the several seconds of close music at the end. KNXV from their heyday is super-rare!)
  15. That is an excellent package and one of my personal favorite news opens. Also note how stiffly traditional the KHON news is compared to all the Fox promos before it; heck, KHON next month is rolling out a 9pm news for the first time in its history. Is it me or do I see a bit of an Australian influence in the actual format of the news open and tease? Three stories at the top and the open is/was a common format for Aussie news opens. (It's worth noting that this user has boatloads of other, non-US news material of interest, particularly from Australia.)
  16. With twin hurricanes headed straight for Hawai'i, combined with a weathercaster's somewhat shaky reputation and fondness for pidgin and waves... I can't recall so many memes about one weathercaster before. Guy Hagi of KGMB/KHNL, I feel really bad for you. The whole meme includes parody Twitter accounts and everything. He also happens to be...on vacation in Europe, which is unusual.
  17. And KDNL didn't even have a news operation long enough for it to benefit from NewsCentral. Locally produced and in-house news > locally produced but not in-house news, with exception of some Fox affiliates (example: WXLV) > news produced halfway across the US (INN or NewsCentral, even though NewsCentral was hybrid local/national) > no news at all. WEVV doesn't even have an INN newscast to fall back on. It has no news whatsoever.
  18. I understand the economics of it—and that American television is very much driven by economics—but the reason I say that is because it's embarrassing for a major (Big 3!) network affiliate, even in a DMA as small as Evansville, to completely lack local news. I'm sure KDNL and WWJ do just fine without it, but the lack of a local newscast really dings the stations' credibility here on this forum. There's a reason we consider KDNL and WWJ to be jokes, and it has everything to do with their lack of solid local news.
  19. No, it's not a newscast (they have a noon show). Four of the five main stations in Phoenix have this type of lifestyle/paid-segment program.
  20. KPNX's Arizona Midday is completely separate.
  21. To do news on WEVV now that it has a Fox subchannel, you'd need at least an evening, 9pm and 10pm show and I'd strongly suggest morning news. I cannot find a suitable newscast clause from CBS's affiliation contract. WTAJ's simply reads "the same amount of local news as you did when the agreement took effect". All the Fox contract from KFXL says is "if you start a local newscast you must join Fox News Edge".
  22. I was hoping that someone would have the wisdom to put news on WEVV, but I can't see it from this ownership. It's been 14 years since WEVV had a newscast.
  23. Sold! $18.6 million for WEVV to minority-owned Bayou City Broadcasting, led by DuJuan McCoy. Not his first rodeo in TV, as he owned KIDY-KXVA for five years. Nexstar now expects to complete the CCA transaction this year now that it has brought the deal into compliance.
  24. Show me your children's television reports, or you'll get fined: the FCC slapped fines on KWES ($6,000), KXXV ($1,000) and KVDA ($3,000) for not telling people where they were. Meanwhile, KGO and KDTV have forged a content-sharing partnership. I think this is the second one so far between an ABC O&O and a Univision outlet, after Philadelphia.
  25. KPNX did it when they moved to the Arizona Republic building in downtown Phoenix: "Live from 200 EVB" (East Van Buren). Their 4pm early news/talk program is "EVB Live". It doesn't sound good at all. (Though I think KPHO appreciates that their new address just happens to be 5555 N. 7th Avenue.)
