  1. Another issue with the list. WTLV/WJXX and WRAL/WRAZ are both commonly-owned duopolies that were created within the first year or two of legalization of duopolies. They were permissible because WJXX and WRAZ were new stations that had just recently acquired network affiliations. They'll stand. KPHO/KTVK would also be an owned duopoly like this; the snarl in that case is the JSA with KASW.
  2. FCC chairman Tom Wheeler will propose the JSA attribution ban on March 31: "The JSA and retransmission consent bans will become effective immediately, assuming a majority of the agency’s commissioners vote in support of the regulations, an FCC source says. A senior FCC official also says the JSA crackdown will apply to pending station transactions at the FCC, and provide up to two years for existing JSAs to unwind. The official also says Wheeler is proposing to adopt an expedited waiver review process under which broadcasters will be able to seek waivers for JSAs. If a broadcaster can show that a particular JSA serves the public interest, it may be able to get a waiver to continue a joint sales sharing deal, the FCC said."
  3. New M&A: Bob Prather's Heartland Media is buying Chambers Communications's Oregon stations (KEZI Eugene, KDRV Medford + KDKF Klamath Falls) for $30 million. Chambers cites issues with network economies of scale and increased costs to ABC.
  4. An unfortunate acronym, but the National Association of Black-Owned Broadcasters is proposing a JSA/SSA compromise under which most agreements would be unwound and those agreements that serve the public interest would be reviewed annually by the FCC, with a guarantee that a station would be transferred to minority ownership. "Also according to the filing, NABOB had previously opposed JSAs and SSAs altogether, on grounds that they “appeared to be mere gimmicks for group licensees to avoid the intent of the local ownership rules.” Nonetheless, Winston said that two of the three full-power TV stations currently licensed to African Americans in the U.S. are being operated under JSA and SSA agreements." Howard Stirk Holdings looks like a solid investment right about now.
  5. The azcentral.com website hasn't been done either, and that's KPNX and the Arizona Republic.
  6. Jessell's always been very conservative in his editorial line, apparently dating back to when he was with Broadcasting magazine. Also, remember when WXIX anchor Sheila Gray left and began working for Sinclair's outlets out of Dayton? Surprise! She's back on Cincinnati TV with WKRC! ...I guess we ALL expected that one. http://cincinnati.com/blogs/tv/2014/02/28/sheila-gray-joins-wkrc-tv-morning-news/
  7. But KTVK is still waiting, with an expected close by June 30. It must be held up in the JSA blockade. I'm wondering if that deal may not go through completely. The KMOV acquisition needed to go through because of the second review's 120-day timeline. They got it in in about 65 or so.
  8. WISH 11pm from 1993. The one cut of Newsleader we HAVEN'T heard from WISH yet: KYW promo for The News Tonight, February 6, 1992:
  9. KTVA's new set has debuted, designed by Devlin Design Group. It's rather similar to the KSAZ 2013 set from them, especially the shape of the desk and the layout of the weather center.
  10. WGHP had Allen and the EWN name even in the first years of Turn To.
  11. Another VTS? Sheesh, these composers have aces up both their sleeves.
  12. There goes my theory that KLBK 1996 was a CBS affiliate package... That said KNAZ's history is one of the most well-discovered for a small- or no-market station.
  13. It's in the Ntropolis-produced montages from before the most recent wave of videos. When I went through the Phoenix research for the affiliation switch, I also read the articles about KNXV's first newscast, which had a cold open: "no pretty pictures of Arizona", no shots of news personalities with their kids, etc. (that's how they described it)
  14. It doesn't help that the Internet Archive uploaded 1,200 videos (they're about 75% through their tapes) or that he is seriously backlogged on unknown themes. I've been rolling in finds this month, with some showing up in the NMSA and some not.
  15. The WTOG listing is not my find, it's TServo's. Here's the full list, though it may not actually be complete. Not all of this is news music, and keep in mind that this was from the 2001 version of the website. Red coloring added to show known works: KFMB, KGTV, KNSD, KLST, KCPN, KNTV, KRIS, KPNX, KOVR, KIEM, KHNL, KUTV, WQAD, WVUE, WFTV, WSIL, WDAF, WHNT, WVTV, WFIE, WRC, WPTZ, WAGT, KULR, WBPN, WICZ, KSBY, WTWS, CFCN, WDTV, KCBA, CKRD, CKSA, KERO, CFPL, WTOG, KPBS, CFJC, KWCH, WCBI, KFBB, WWTV, KCEN, WBOY, MGN Cine TV Roma, WJTV, KBAK, WXFL, WTVJ, WREX, WOKR, WFMY KNTV and KWCH are known and in the NMSA. The KCBA/KFMB/WBOY/CFPL and WDAF/WWTV themes are highly likely to be Silvertree but not in. KGTV 1994 is also likely to be Silvertree off the list, as well as WFTV 1986 (which was also used by WQAD). I believe WTOG 1993 could be Silvertree. I speculate KPNX 1985/86, "We're Going Where You're Going", is Silvertree as well. Many of these stations have insufficient available information, like KLST, WICZ and WAGT, to do anything. Silvertree was founded in 1984, so these stations had Silvertree between 1984 and 2001.
  16. Hot off the 1987 WWLP blooper reel... http://cl.ly/020D113J3d0N/WLOX%201990%20Theme%20%E2%80%94%2030%20Second%20Clean%20Cut.mp3
  17. Well, it's certainly not legal right now, not until 2015.
  18. WAPT 6pm, 1986: WVUE, 1987 (what the heck?) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_GK9-4tFjc
  19. You may also want the WANE 1987 open from that package: https://www.dropbox.com/s/jypyg4ifkxlbluy/WANE_1987_WLOX90.mp3
  20. I'm about to shock you. I think this might be Silvertree. WTOG (but not WAKA) was on the Silvertree client list. I'm slightly reminded of the KWCH 1993 theme.
  21. I've seen both videos and the NMSA has the audio (KTSP 1990 and WCMH 1992 are new themes still not in), but wow, I didn't even realize the similarities...
  22. I found that WGPR theme as well. It is quite something to have WGPR material. Easily the rarest stuff in there. And we've found WPTF with Great News and WBMG, so we're not exactly talking a low bar. The WRGB 6:30 theme is new to me, but the noon theme is a cut of what they were known to be using at the time (the WLNE theme).
  23. So did KNXV. It really is, though some people will not like it being responsive around here.
  24. The secret package is from the 80s. The name was found amidst a listing of two other major works from the music company. When I saw it with those names it made immediate sense though I had never heard that name for a news music package. I've been sitting on this for eight months awaiting confirmation through my partner in news music crime. @promoguy98 Consider talking to TServo2049. He's the other news music guru on this site, and he has contacts with the composers. Did not know about the WLOX theme. Oh yes, and I've been hounding the NMSA on the CBS 1988 Affiliate Package for years—in fact, I did it for a third time in an email I sent today. It's one of the worst errors on the site, besides the absolute trash that is the Joplin records (I've written forum posts on that too). Also, KTLA 1990 is VTS? Well, that's interesting. The ending is a dead ringer for a lot of the VTS packages from this era, so I'm not terribly surprised.
  25. Whoa! Another great find! I have some in my pocket, but they're waiting to be confirmed by the composers. One I am particularly eager to announce because it would be a larger find than either of these two. I think I hooked a name for one of the most popular unnamed themes. But I can pull this fresh find out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyT3XbQLug4 — KGMB, 1999 with newly found 1997 Theme (composed by Audy Kimura). I found the theme entry while looking for Hawaii News Now. It's likely that he composed the 2009 KGMB/KHNL theme as well but I cannot be sure.
