  1. Couple from me as I continue skimming through tapes for some "new" vintage materials - stuff that wasn't posted on my previous YouTube channel.

An open from a KPRC 10 PM weekend newscast from April 1991.

A news update, also from KPRC, from May 1985. I have a complete newscast from the same evening that I'll upload in the near future.

An observation during one of the breaks on the same tape: I'm thinking there may have been some demo work that John Christopher Burns may have done which ended up on air prior to the look they ultimately ended up using when they launched the "Channel Two News" brand/logo/set, etc. about three months later. I don't have much from this particular stretch so far, but I hadn't seen it elsewhere.

At the least, it sorta feels like some of the stuff he did earlier in the decade...

  2. Sign-offs & Sign-ons still occur. I managed to snag this during a recent trip to Abilene, TX. It is the first video I've uploaded as part of my second YouTube channel - TV Travels Archive. I'm looking to bring back the promos & newscasts from around the country that I had on the old HoustonTVNews channel, seperate from the Houston TV History channel I've got up and running.

  3. A couple of news-related uploads from the archive I'm working on rebuilding...

A fairly short-lived news capsule offered by KTXH at the end of their evening movie, circa 1985

A news update and part of a sports update from KHTV from November 1988 - just after the music & graphics Gaylord had launched across it's stations was put in place. Can't say I'd heard the brief sports cut before, but it's definitely from that same package.

Also, some interesting studio history there-- it appears they started with a copy of WTTG's set from the era (with the white panels above and the logo in the center that was changed to Fox logos), then had a bizarre mostly-chroma-key setup before getting a hand-me-down set from WNYW (that set dated to 1988-89 and was originally blue-toned with a duratran logo area above the center monitor, before it was redone in 1991-92 with the yellow lit paneling and the brass-y coloring).

As much as I dislike necroposting (although is it really necroposting if it's an active thread and I just found this by happenstance while searching for something? Whatever...), I wanted to add a bit to this.

I think KRIV's original "set" as such for news updates was a fairly basic silhouette of the downtown skyline. This was before they started doing full newscasts in the mid 80s. I'm reasonably certain that at about the same time, Metromedia provided both stations similar sets, with some lighting tweaks and a different desk between the pair. There's not a substantial amount of either station's news coverage from that period out there, unfortunately.

Was able to find this image circa February 1986 though.

Came across a 1991 open on one of my "newer" old tapes, and it seemed to be a fairly wide set and desk - something I didn't really catch before. I will get around to uploading this clip at some point in the near future...

The chroma-key set set was an interim fix that occurred in 1993-94, and even then the old desk (and parts of the maroon paneling on the farthest edges, for a time) was retained. The WNYW set went into use when Fox started airing NFL games in August of 1994. It survived until they moved to their current facility in 1997.

***Ahem, you may return to your previously scheduled classic video thread...

Welcome back! You were gone for so long I had thought NBC threw you in jail after terminating the old account. I was about to make a whole thread begging you to return, but instead of on YT, as a website (ala FuzzyMemories and TCMediaNow).

Thank you for the kind words. Thank you to everyone else who echoed similar sentiments as well!

The copyright concern debacle was an interesting one in that NBCU's person(s) chose a number of clips that ran the gamut of what I had uploaded. They included a few of the complete newscasts from Telemundo O&Os KTMD & KXTX to the sign-off of the low-powered WBGH in Binghamton, NY circa 2006 (Because of the peacock on the static image? I don't know...). The few attempts I made to get reversals on decisions regarding a couple of videos were rebuffed. I  also had a lot on my plate at the time on the personal and professional front and just let it go.  I still have pretty much everything that I uploaded on the original version anyway, so it's just a matter of time before some of it starts to return.

As for a dedicated site - stay tuned for news on that front. Both of the sites you mention are great and an inspiration regarding what I would like to accomplish with the content I have down the line.

  6. Hello all, I have started uploading videos at a new YouTube site - Houston TV History. I only have a few clips up right now, but am looking to bring back some old favorites as well as some "new" classic content in the coming days and weeks. The first three are examples of the latter - stuff I haven't posted before.

A rare editorial statement from KTRK's Dave Ward on crime from August 1991.

A promo for KRIV's 7 PM newscast from mid-1986, during the transition from Metromedia to Fox

And not news... (well, there's a quick spot for it prior to the open) but the intro to KRIV's late night movie showcase, "Nightwatch 26" from the same period.

  8. The oldest newscast on file at KTRK — August 23, 1978:

They've been adding a fair amount of vintage material in the recent past. Some are parts of newscasts while others are the full ones... minus the close in some cases.

5/11/1976 - The infamous ammonia cloud in Southwest Houston

    2/2/1980 - Clips from a weekend newscast

    5/15/1980 - The Late Report

    5/16/1980 - Live at Five

  9. This is about the fifth set I've seen that has the girders, the monitor banks, the rounded desk, etc. The most infamous one would be KNXV's "spaceship" set, and I've seen similar ones in use at WGNX (during the late indie/early CBS era), WOIO/WUAB (during the "Cleveland Television News" period), and maybe a couple others. Does anybody know who designed all these sets?

I'm reasonably certain it was The Express Group.

  10. I'm pretty certain that the theme listed as "KHTV 1989 News Theme" is just one of the cuts from the music package that KHTV and and the other Gaylord Broadcasting stations were using starting some time in 1988 or 1989. I've been curious about who did it for years though.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=JzIRG8EFXd8;m=1;s=1

An example from KTVT using it

Maybe it is tied to the one listed as "WVTV 1987 News Theme" as well? Clips from the station's news updates from the period feature both playing in the background.

  11. Couple of KBMT promos

Great find! I had been looking for something else that proved they used "It's All Right Here" during this period for some time.

I'd guess this is maybe 1988 or 89? I have some KJAC content from late 1987 and Bob Becker (seen at 0:35 in the clip) was the weather personality present. He may have jumped soon after, as did Albert Zipp who was still at KFDM based on a December 1987 newscast I've uploaded before.

Only other thing out there featuring it's use is a 1989 commercial compilation with a promo for their morning news at about 5:15 that I updated in the past.

  12. More from my archives, this time from August '03. More to come from this part of the world and time at some point - I have a few tapes from that particular trip and was using multiple VCRs at the time.

  13. The problem with Wichita is that the eras are scattered - KAKE has plenty from the 80s while KWCH has plenty from the 90s. As for KSNW, it’s the same as KAKE, yet the annoying part is that their 1986 newscast has no music on the open.

Not to go too far off tangent, but what's more annoying is the only other stuff that that I have from KSNW from that period is on a tape that rewound off the reel and I just haven't had a moment to get it fixed. It's most of the same elements that have been uploaded, in either SP or LP quality. Not too much new, but still, it's more than was there before.

For me, the big one I'm trying to track down is KWCH's "The Look of a Leader" era stuff, especially when it comes to newscasts and similar shows. The few things I have uploaded on YouTube are all that I have so far so I'm not sure if some of the stuff I've heard on other tapes I have is part of it or is just production music.

  14. McKinnon quality folks.

Never ceases to amaze me when I'm beaten in linking to things I actually uploaded... heh. I was actually uploading a 5 PM newscast from the same day that has a formal open, but it's not much better.

What's interesting is that it was actually a deviation from the stuff KIII & KUSI were using during the period. All three began using the same general set of elements, albeit with some variations, in 2000. KUSI was the graphics hub for the trio of stations during their shared ownership. KBMT had just about all of the other basic elements but different L3s that the other two stations. KBMT actually had their graphics updated a couple of times, in 2002 or 03 (a brief glimpse of the remnants of it are visible at about 33:00 with the email address) and then again in 2006 or 07. It was tweaked about a year later but was later dropped in favor of an HD-friendly and contemporary look when the sale to London took place at the start of this decade.

KIII did have some changes along the way as well. Maybe some rejoins that were updated around 2003, new opens & talent bumpers in 06, and then not much else until the sale to London.

KIII and KUSI were still using elements from the 2000-era look until at least 2010 or so, if I'm not mistaken.
