  1. Bostick was an owner that was notoriously cheap on his station music (we even have a quote about that from him — they wanted to buy, which is why they were still using The News Image in 1997) but the follow-up package is among my all-time favorites. They basically sent the market quality soaring with that music and graphics set.

"Buy the music... Buy it just like you buy your cameras and like you buy your transmitters. When you buy it, you own it and you use it until it is no good and you can throw it away."

Great observation! The final three years of ownership represent a sea-change of sorts in that line of thinking across the Bostick stations. Within this period, each of the stations in what became Gray's initial Texas-trio (KWTX,KBTX & KXII) received or were in the process of receiving on-air updates. KXII actually gained a news set that had a set of windows onto the newsroom and a fully-functional on-air weather center, all the work of Devlin Design Group. The graphics and music took some time to improve, however. That actually launched before the KWTX look that we are talking about now. Early to Mid 1996 maybe for KXII. There isn't a ton of content available online for them from that period. This one clip below represents the bulk of it, actually.

KWTX made the updates at some point in 1997 as mentioned. While there were some tweaks here and there, it more or less remained intact until 2005 when they picked up one of Gray's standardized sets.

KBTX, which there seems to be even less of online, was midstream in those changes when the sale to Gray was announced. I believe it was May of 2000, when they began using updated graphics, a new studio, whose floorplan is basically still in place to this day (Open studio with working newsroom in the background). They also started using a greater variety of cuts of "This is Your News".

One of my big regrets as a news/media junkie actually came about a month prior as I was in town for an extended class field-trip and stayed overnight in a hotel in College Station. KBTX actually was running the full-length image commercial of "This is Your News" during just about every commercial break in the late evening/early morning hours from what I saw and that had to be the ONE time I didn't take my VCR along. It was also interesting as I recall they were running what would've been the "new" logo and graphics during those spots, but nowhere else on-air so it was a sneak-peek at the look that would've been debuting soon. Those graphics remained until 2004 or 05. The set remained until some point this decade, if I'm not mistaken.

I've gone into my archives and found some photos of the KXII & KWTX sets. They are from 2002 when I was still in high school, but should give a better look at what we're talking about!

  2. Vintage KWTX in 1997.

It's weird to actually see this look and sound when it was relatively new (minus the last few moments, which were definitely not from 1997).

I think I have a tape of 10's morning news from around '02 or '03 and thinking how nice but dated the very same update graphics looked. The Lower-thirds had been modernized a bit but still looked pretty close to fitting the character of the overall graphics package.

Bostick was a quality owner based on everything I have seen, and they really invested in KWTX prior to their sale to Gray. The look, sound and direction of the newscasts even into the early years of Gray's ownership were very well executed. Not what you'd expect of of #90 or so market.

  3. I guess TVbD was left unnamed due to not being local.

Unfortunately, there's not much footage of KMPH's non-news image elements online, but I happen to have an ID followed by a stereo L3 graphic at the beginning of a program, which I got on VHS almost 20 years ago. I believe the same person sent the Fresno clips to TV Ark back in the 00s.

The ID music is great, and the announcer even says "Now in stereo!"

It's too bad the few clips that are around are the TVArk ones and a few with the camera pointed at a TV. It does sound like a really nice package.

These are some examples from a YouTube page with the aformentioned camera pointed at a TV. The user's titles hint at 1989-90 even though they are from the same feature.

That guy has been posting some great OKC stuff for a while. I'm a bit envious! I've hit a number of thrift stores both in the OKC Metro and in southern Oklahoma for tapes over the course of the years and I've come up short. The stuff I've picked up is mostly cable or DFW which is fairly easy to come by in comparison.

  7. Lori is still there. There until the end.

That's too bad about the Elko station, but Lori is one of the best out there in my humble opinion. Whatever she does next, she will excel.

About 6 or 7 years ago, a firm I was working with was developing a news department at one of the radio stations in town and she helped us build our network of contacts in the area. She helped share leads and resources when possible. She didn't treat us as a competitor and thought it was more important that additional voices were available to get the word out about stories in the community. I've never forgotten that and appreciate what she did for us to this day.

From Chuck D's channel; here's a promo for possibly the first airing of CBS' Morning Program train-wreck

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpPPJ6KM1R0

It is. It was clipped from a commercial compilation I uploaded a few months back (it appears at 6:59).

Here are a few new clips of interest that I've uploaded...

  16.

SESAC lists Chip Davis of Mannheim Steamroller as having done a news theme and other on-air music for KSHB. Could this be his work? We don't want to blindly speculate, of course...

There are also SESAC records of news themes by Davis for KMGH and KMTV. Maybe the KMTV 1990 clip in the last page is his theme? (I dunno what KMGH theme could have been his - the 1989 one?)

It's possible - the music does have a certain element of the band's 'sound' to it, although somewhat toned down to a point.

I'd love to know who did the jazzy theme for the early 90s newscasts they aired as a FOX affiliate. I have a newscast of theirs from 1993 or 94 that I'll have to post at some time.

  17.

    KSNF 10pm, May 25, 1992:

(A block missing but it has a close)

Interesting to see how KSNF was branding at this time. In 1990, SJL Communications bought the Kansas State Network and cut costs by severing the microwave link between Wichita and Topeka and Joplin. While their Wichita (and Topeka) outlets had rolled out new logos in 1986 and slick Television by Design graphics in 1988, their Joplin station was using a modestly updated version of the network's mid-80s branding, complete with old "KSN" logo and that yellow-orange-blue stripe pattern.

Just saw that... I have a bit of the Today show from KSNF during the 1988 Olympics and it appears there may have been no change in branding up until some point in the 90s. They had the same logo/color scheme & were using "All The News" in said clip. Even then it looked dated in comparison to KSNW & the rest of the network.

A note - TVbd's influence on KSN actually began at some point in 1987. I have a few tapes from then, and I think they may have used an interim, 'older' (relatively-speaking) graphics package from that firm, before the one that appears on NewsActive3's reel. They also introduced Gari's 'Great News' at this time as well. A February '89 tape I have with material recorded from KSNC, the station in Great Bend, shows that even they picked up the updated look by that point. KSN definitely stayed with them for a while - they updated the graphics for the network in the mid 90's and also did the graphics for the short-lived newscast they produced for KSAS, the FOX station, in the late 90s.
