I see that WWL now has the CBS eye. I am wondering if KENS will incorporate the CBS eye logo into their graphics, when they change soon.

I quite honestly hope they just get a new logo instead. I've never warmed up to the current logo. Looks like it took 30 minutes to make max. The two logos before it were better, especially the thin curved 5 they used from the 70's to 1994 and is still etched in on a wall in their lobby.
  2.

I disagree with the G3 look. I don't like modern and fresh looks. If I want modern and fresh looks (with leftist biased reporting) I can tune to a European news network. I am a traditionalist, graphics I can read and not be forced into a 16:9 format when (believe it or not ) many still have SDI or a non HD set. And for the love of God who ever came up with the 9 colors for their graphics package should be fired and banned from the TV industry.

The G3 package has no character limits, no drop shadowing, just flat and simple (read stupid) graphics only a 25 year old that doesn't wear glasses can read.

Where's the color on the graphics (insert "Where's the Beef" tone?) The tiny thin lines is hard to see. And USA Today? How many fleeping times do I have to be reminded that any Gannett station is sisters with a paper I haven't read from front to back since 2001!? I'd take the deathstar ID over being forced down my throat in the lower third package anyday!

I loved the Belo package, its style aligned with the substance, like lower thirds that are meant to be read 10' away (not 1" to ruin ones eyes!) And if they dump Propulsion V 2 (yes V1 sucked like heck, but V2 is classic 615 Music) with the lame This is Home, that would be really disappointing. I don't get that campaign, whats "home"? No one lives in their hometown like a generation ago. Its not relevant to the modern generation to be quite honest.

Amen. Best thing I've read about these graphics so far. I agree with you wholeheartedly.

And yes I have an HD set but prefer to watch the standard def feed actually. Force of habit mainly, but the HD quality is so bright it literally blinds me...

  3.

My positive attitude about this look has not and will not change. It's refreshing, striking, and perhaps since they're on a modern platform, possibly capable of more eyecandy as well. It enhances the editorial content substantially, and it looks pretty damn good to me as a web designer.

Designing for broadcast is not the same as designing for the web...

Many TV station graphics would not cut it on the Web or in print. This is excellent.

They're not supposed to. Just like most newspaper designs wouldn't work on TV
  4. I don't like how their ticker is three lines. Line 3 is redundant since it repeats the same information from line 1. All of the stations here have one line tickers for severe weather; and one of them has a one-liner with a map of the viewing area. I just think that ticker WBAL uses is way too busy.

They also tell us that there is a winter weather warning twice. Talk about redundacy in more ways than one.

  5.

that look doesn't fit KING 5 at all.

    I agree.

I have a feeling it won't fit KENS 5 either. It also won't go with their set at all.

I actually kind of like the cut..

This is Home isn't a bad package. My favorite cut is the one WUSA uses to open their newscasts. I was hoping they would use that cut. I also like the image campaign so hopefully they will get that.
  6.

They are using This is Home. One thing that didn't change was Jim Birdsall, who continues his VO duties at KING.

The cut they're using sucks. Can't wait for the other stations to get this....

To the uploader of that video:

Recorded via KING-DT on Cogeco Digital TV (Oakville) Ch. 719.

Uhh, hate to break it to you but you recorded that off their webstream. Sorry, something I'm nitpicky about and why I usually don't watch that particular user's videos...
  7.

    king1_zpsa45e33f5.png

    From tonight's 5pm newscast.

Those graphics clash with the set. Not good at all...

Also, are they using This is Home as the theme music or still with Tower V2? Everybody is mentioning graphics but not once have I seen anything about music...

The other KING-associated stations (KREM, KTVB and KGW) would make sense to follow next?

Why would KGW get the graphics? They are a Sander station.

Besides, their current in-house graphics are so much better than this Gannett corporate crap...

  8. Hopefully WOAI (Sinclair) will drop Live Well. They used to have Mexicanal on 4.2, which was pretty interesting to watch. Much better than LWN. I would like to see a station here pick up Antenna TV.

Apparently the folks at KABB have nothing better to do after the Spurs won Game 1 of the NBA Finals.

Haha that's actually pretty funny. Spurs are huge here and how dare you talk bad about them Heat fan ;)

While we're on the subject: KSAT and WPLG are making a friendly wager again. If the Spurs win the Finals, WPLG's morning anchors have to wear Spurs jerseys on the air and donate $500 to a San Antonio charity. If the Heat win (which they won't), then KSAT's morning anchors have to wear Heat jerseys on the air and donate $500 to a South Florida charity.

  10.

Are children actually stupid enough to watch the drivel that qualifies as cartoons these days? The cartoons of my youth, Underdog, Yogi Bear, Jetsons, Bugs Bunny, etc. were far more entertaining than the crap you see today. Everything was done better back in the old days, from the story line to the humor to the music!

Unfortunately, yes. I have younger siblings that are six, seven so I can tell you that from experience. I didn't know when it became aceeptable to say "sucks", "screw", "moron" in a children's show.... (I'm looking at you "Irregular Show")

    end rant

  11.

I don't know that this needs its own thread so I will post it here...

Diana Perez is leaving ABC tomorrow to spend more time with her children. She did hint that she would be back though. In terms of the next anchor, my money is on Marci Gonzalez.

Like her filling in for three months wasn't a tryout for Diana's position... I hope they do promote Marci Gonzalez though. I like her. Has a great personality and fits the program well.

Now they just need to find a way to get rid of John Muller, he's not that good. As bland and boring as they come. He would be better as a reporter.

  12.

More ads out of Broadcasting magazine... The first one ran in 1979 and the second one, which is from the same time frame, appeared in 1981.

These incredible finds, including We're Putting It On, correlate to

, the demo reel (the "Package of Packages") from this company (Hayes Broadcast Promotion and Syndication aka Hayes Productions). Combined with that video, San Antonio-based Hayes can be said with confidence to have produced the following news themes:

    KMOL 1979

    KTVY 1980 (also: KMOL, KTPX**)

WAGA 1977 (also: KSAT, KTVK, WCMH, WJAR, WSOC)

    (also: WTLV)*

From top to bottom, the items featured in the second image are WTLV ActionNews from 1980 (presumably from when they joined ABC), KMOL from 1979, and a "Campaign 80" bumper that probably is from CBS.

It's worth noting that in the demo reel a WAGA open is overlaid with KMOL's news set for the demo—this explains why, since Hayes was based out of San Antonio and had KMOL as one of its clients.

*Listed as X Belongs; WAGA debuted X Belongs from Peters later in 1979. WTLV used the same theme as WAGA and so it is mislabeled. Notice the San Antonio usage of KTVY 1980 and WAGA 1977; Outlet owned KSAT at the time.

**Known only by the demo reel, which features an animation with the slogan "There's a New 9 Coming". KTPX later became KWES.

WOW. What a find. This is so cool. Never knew the old KMOL theme was done by a locally-based firm. Thanks for finding this out Raymie.

Also, the first ad from 1979 said they had been in business for "a dozen years" so that means they were established in 1967. Let's see if Raymie can find out more about this "Hayes Broadcast Corporation" and when/why they went out of business.

@TexasTVNews had it right on the money. Albert Flores has been promoted to chief meteorologist at San Antonio's WOAI. He will shift his duties from the weekday morning newscast to the 5, 6, 6:30 and 10 p.m. newscasts starting May 27.

I figured he was going to take over. Considering he had been chief at KENS over 20 years, it was only natural to promote him. I like him, he's a great meteorologist. Unfortunately, he had an incident in 2001 where he plagiarized material for his Express-News column which cost him his job at KENS. Fortunately WOAI has given him a second chance but a select few viewers have not. Any time there's an article on My SA about him most of the commenters will bring up his plagiarism incident from 2001 and say he's not qualified to be chief and shame on WOAI for promoting him.

Sorry but he deserves a second chance and all he did was plagiarize. Give him a pass. He's gotten over it a long time ago. If he was a journalist then yes, I would think about it differently. But he's not, he's a meteorologist, so the standards are a little different. No, I'm defending him plagiarizing but the incident happened nearly 15 years ago. Just forget about it.....

Other briefs coming out of San Antonio (I can't remember so much media news coming out of this market before):

    • the original poster didn't mention this, but Mike Hernandez from KABB will be filling in on the morning shift until they hire someone else. Will be curious to see who they hire. Lately, Blaise Labbe has been bringing in a lot of outsiders in to the Sinclair shop here, as you'll see in a moment. Also, I hope Hernandez won't be working seven day weeks since he is currently KABB's weekend meteorologist and does Daytime at Nine during the week. He generally gets two days off during the week. KABB has Robert Luna as a weekend fill-in but I don't see him getting a full-time position because he is a high school teacher during the week. Honestly, I just see Siobhain Anders adding KABB's 9PM news to her plate since it's much cheaper than hiring someone else just to do one thirty-minute newscast two days a week. KABB and WOAI have a direct fiber link that was installed not long after Sinclair took over, so Anders could do the 9PM weather live from WOAI for KABB. Once they move in, that will be a moot point.
    • According to the Express-News, Blaise Labbe is this/close to announcing a replacement for Elsa Ramon. Some believe that Delaine Mathieu will permanently add the 6 and 10 to her schedule, while others think they will hire an outsider.
    • Time Warner Cable News San Antonio has announced it will launch June 2. Currently on cable channel 14, which is where TWC News will be, is a loop of Capital Tonight and Sports Night both from TWC News Austin. Michael Pearson, who is the news director for TWC News Austin, will also work in the same capacity for TWC News San Antonio. Newscasts will be anchored out of Austin but will have local reporters. Eventually the San Antonio channel will produce its own content.
My take away: Time Warner seems like they don't have a lot of confidence in the channel if they are outsourcing production to Austin, which is a smaller DMA. They don't even have their own ND. The guy from Austin is going to run the channel. Who's supposed to make daily coverage decisions, especially if one guy has to run two newsrooms? Having said that, I hope this channel succeeds, even if Comcast's proposed merger goes through. It will give San Antonio a fourth English news operation again, since WOAI/KABB are basically one newsroom now (still using two separate buildings AFAIK). Will be interested to see who ends up on the channel. However, I won't be watching it, since I do not have Time Warner Cable and have no plans to switch back to that wreck of a company.

[*]KSAT has begun running promos for Adam Caskey. I didn't pay attention to it so I don't know how it goes. I just know at the end, there's video of him along the S.A. river smiling with his name, he will be debuting in June and the KSAT logo on the screen. I'll see if I can catch it.

[*]Speaking of KSAT, they have released some details for their new lifestyle show they'll be launching this fall. From TVSpy:

    [*]

Six months after leaving KDFW, Fiona Gorostiza is joining San Antonio ABC affiliate KSAT as the host of a new local lifestyle show, the San Antonio Express-News reports [note: I never found the article on their site and TVSpy linked to something else, not the article]

“It feels so good to be able to return to Texas, and to fulfill my dream of hosting a new program for such a powerful station,” ” Gorostiza said. The Express-News has details on the show, which will debut this fall:

… Two things instantly set KSAT’s “SA Live” apart: It will air in the afternoon, and it will come live from a downtown location — The Buckhorn saloon and museum on Houston Street — rather than a studio.

“The vibrancy at The Buckhorn really lends itself to the type of program we want to produce,” KSAT general manager Phil Lane said.

“SA Live,” described as a variety, game, interview and entertainment show rolled into one, will air at 1 p.m. Katie Couric‘s syndicated “Katie” will be dropped from KSAT’s 2 p.m. hour so ABC’s “General Hospital,” which currently airs at 1 p.m., can slide into that slot.

I'm sure many viewers are relieved to know Michael and Kelly at 9AM won't be going anywhere. KSAT does the best in that timeslot because of them. Although I don't know why they didn't put it at ten and tape delay "The View". Or, better yet, at 11 so I'm not subject to day-old episodes of "The Chew" where "Extra Value Fridays" airs on a Monday... But it doesn't sound like a typical show. I might actually watch this when it starts. I'd like to know if Fiona will be soloing or if she'll have a co-host. I guess we'll have to stay tuned to this one. Also, I don't think they have the studio space to do it from their main building, even if they wanted too. I'm still wondering if the studio from their old building was left intact because nothing has changed there. However they did get a new CG because the L3's animate in/out sometimes.

    [*]

KABB has announced a replacement for Cynthia Lee. And it's not someone internal like I had thought. Guess Blaise wants to make his mark. This is straight from the Express-News:

    [*]

SAN ANTONIO — Change seems to be the lead story at San Antonio TV sister stations WOAI and KABB these days — with the latest headline involving the Fox affiliate’s chief anchor replacement for the departing Cynthia Lee.

    Elisa-Amigo-399x600.jpg

She’s Elisa Amigo, an anchor/reporter out of Cleveland. An Emmy winner for Best Weekend News, Amigo also was honored as one of Northeast Ohio’s top “40 under 40” Hispanic leaders.

The lovely new hire with the striking eyes will team up with the station’s 9 p.m. news anchor staple, Michael Valdes, starting May 19.

Lee is leaving the TV news game to spend more time with family as well as pursue a career as a full-time broker for Transwestern real estate brokerage.

In her seven years at Fox affiliate WJW-TV, Amigo has covered a wide array of stories including the emotional return home of the three Cleveland women held hostage for more than a decade and the mass shootings at Chardon High School

“As a journalist, she’s a real pro,” Dean Radla, KABB general manager said, “but most importantly, I feel our viewers will find her very personable and genuine, as well as a great on-air partner for Michael Valdes.”

Elisa grew up in Marietta, Ohio, and attended the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. She graduated cum laude and majored in broadcast journalism with a double-minor in Spanish and political science.

The only thing I can see being worth an acquisition is Nexstar's pathetic Billings cluster, which is an ABC (KSVI) and a Fox (KHMT). Neither currently have a news product and

, at the time of the Nexstar acquisition. The ratings were weak, and the law enforcement thought their reporting was too aggressive.

The newscast started during the previous ownership group. Nexstar (specifically Brian Jones) was the one who made the decision to cancel the newscast.

This would be perfect for Gray. Then Nexstar would be free of any ownership in the Billings market. Then they could make a play for Cordillera with virtually no conflicts. Nexstar is my favorite for Cordillera. I can't see them fitting with Gray like someone else suggested due to too many conflicts.

  15.

This is a bit random but who designs Nexstar's sets?

From my limited understanding, I think they have an in-house designer based at KARK. I think they then hire local companies to actually fabricate and install the set. Before that, they used to use Modular Broadcast Design for at least the old WROC and WBRE sets.
  16.

I didn't see it anywhere so I post this: KSAT, KENS anchors in love; expecting baby:

    http://blog.mysanantonio.com/jakle06/2014/04/ksat-kens-anchors-in-love-expecting-baby/

sanewsguy, being from SA, congrats to your spurs and happy cinco by the way, care to oblige about this or observations about these two in general?

I didn't know Isis and Phil Anaya were dating, nor do I really care. Wish they would've gotten married then had kids but it's their relationship I suppose. Isis is not that great of anchor anyways. And you gotta love the Express-News comments of people gawking at Isis....

I'm not too big into Cinco de Mayo but as for the Spurs, glad they beat the Mavs and even though everyone I talked to says they should have won the series much earlier, I think it's great it took them seven games because it keeps them focused. They don't get too much rest compared to if they had sweeped them.
