So every Friday Melissa Magee “fills in” for David Murphy doing weather at noon, but today Cecily filled in at noon, and now Melissa Magee is filling in for her at 11pm.  I haven’t seen Cecily on the noon since she got promoted to evenings.

Speaking of the noon newscast on Fridays, why don’t they just change the opening to drop Sarah and David, keep Rick, and add Melissa? Ever since Sarah was added to Sunday evenings, Sarah has been off Fridays, and Melissa has filled in for David.

She and Melissa probably worked out a deal that she’d work 12pm if Melissa would fill in at 11pm on Friday night.

Another thing I noticed is that Sharrie Williams has been off all week except oddly she filled in for Monica @ 5pm on Thursday. Then was off again on Friday.

Maybe a case of the anchors tryna use as much of their vacation time as possible as the year is almost finished

  2. I think what’s working is the Combination of the Anchor teams and the on air graphic/set appearance. Hands down ‘CAU has the best news set in town. The station looks and operates as a market #4 station. *Take note CBS*

When Jim Gardner retires I can see 10 overtaking 6 @ 11pm if they continue to play their cards right. Jim/Jacqueline are a good team.

I’m just interested; does anyone know where KYW came in the ratings?

  3. Wrong... Young and talent doesn't last in small markets not large markets. Again KYW\CBS O&Os run a young and cheap operation. I can speak from experience on that one knowing what positions offer and who accepts them vs who doesn't. Salaries are considerably less and they rather try and train vs bring in seasoned talent. You need seasoned talent on the streets for I-pieces who know how to work and manage sources and have the experience handling a complicated situation\story that occurs in a large market vs a smaller market. But what do I know.. I only have 30 years in the business

WPVI/WCAU run a seasoned and older operation. Especially WPVI; the reason why they’re number one is because their anchors and reporters have been around forever. Even ‘PVI’s “young” talent is top notch. Same with NBC10.

At KYW other than Ukee Washington and maybe Natasha Brown who there has been around longer than 5years? Talent comes and goes at that station. No real connection with the city and it’s residents. Unlike Action News where their Anchors are household names.

There’s a reason why so many have abandoned ship at KYW. It’s a station you come to build your resume and add market 4 to your list of accomplishments; and then head National.

This Ain’t some flyover market in Kansas. It’s a place where people should aspire to get to and WANT to stay long term. That’s how u build a successful station. By hiring people who find it an honor to be in Philadelphia.

It’s a shame what has happened to CBS. Long gone are the likes of Walt Hunter, Pat C, Malcolm Poindexter, Trudy Hanes, Larry Kane, etc

But that’s the business nowadays: Young, Pretty, & CHEAP.

  4. LOL. 4th place news org in the city hires another anchor that probably won't last that long here either cause the station's management can't get out of its own way? Not even close. I will give them credit for going to a respectable operation to find her though. They should also look at WJZ to figure out how to put out a decent news product.

Quoted for emphasis. WJZ is a good CBS operation. Maybe KYW can replace some of the management with WJZ staffers; because the KCCO experiment in Philly isn’t working.

KYW may wanna add to their male anchor bench. Or at least not have Ukee and Jessica anchor 5,6,10,11pm shows. The station is a mess, why is CBS allowing its station in the 4th largest market to be such a non competitive entity???

  5. Yeah people really like Hoda, she has a huge following going back to her days in New Orleans. If NBC were smart theyd add her to compete against CBS which is growing in viewers.

  6. Tony Yates filled in for Lori a few mornings this past week. I actually thought she was great with Ken. I prefer her to Shirleen.

So whats the consensus on the addition of Shirleen to WABC. Its been a year now since she joined from WPVI.

  7. More likely she'll become an "eyewitness" to news on CBS3 or you can "count on it" that she'll appear on NBC10. They have anchor vacancies whereas 6ABC is "action"-packed with anchors.

She maybe headed to 6ABC but unlikely unless someone is leaving to go to the network. My guess is she is headed to NBC10 either as weekend evening anchor or 4pm& 6pm co anchor to replace Renee Chenault Fattah.

  8.

KYW needs a to do a complete overhaul and they need to invest in the stations. Their product has been lacking for a few years now. I may get a big backlash from this but I think the Alycia Lane and Larry Mendte saga/incident, whatever you want to call it, messed up the channels reputation a bit and leaving the viewers with a bad taste in their mouths . They were on top at one point but now look at them. CBS in general needs to do some work on about all of their stations (WFOR, WCBS, KCBS, KTVT, etc.). I do agree that they need to hire at least 3 male anchors an another female anchor. A rebrand of their sports department and another male weathercaster for weekend mornings. Here's my take below:

Mornings: Erika von Tiehl and Male-co anchor

Noon: Pat Ciarrocchi and Male co-anchor (from the mornings)

Evenings should be broken up into 2 teams

5 p.m. and 11 p.m.: Ukee Washington and Jessica Dean

    6 p.m. and 10 p.m.: Natasha Brown and Male co-anchor

    Weekend Mornings : Nicole Brewer

Weekend Evenings: Diana Rocco (or new female anchor) and Male co-anchor

If they do this and stick with the teams for more than 3 years to show stability, then they might have a shot. Heck add a 4 p.m. or 7 p.m. newscast but make it a bit lighter and try to interact with viewers.

    I like this line up.

Natasha should be moved to evenings. And I also think they need a very attractive male co anchor to replace Ukee. (some may disagree)

In other words they need someone who can bring the buzz back to CBS 3. Alycia Lane was very attractive that's part of the reason people tuned in to watch her & Larry Mendte every night. TV news is a superficial realm like it or not. Personality, beauty, and longevity is the name of the game.

Eyewitness News this morning: Erika & New male Co anchor

Noon: Pat & Morning male co anchor

5pm: Pat & Natasha (all female @ 5pm can work, add in some lifestyle segments e.g., neighborhood eats on Fridays like WABC)

    6pm: Ukee & Jessica

10pm: Natasha can do it solo since its only a 30min newscast

    11pm: Ukee & Jessica

    Weekend Mornings: Todd & Nicole

Weekend Evenings: Diana Rocco and male co anchor

Only 2 male co anchors are hired in this case. Promotions from within, saves the station $$$.

  9. CBS 3 needs to hire at least 2 weathercasters, 3 male Co-Anchors (1 to replace Ukee in the AM, 1 for weekend mornings, 1 weekend evenings)

A new sports anchor, and a few new reporters who belong in Market 4. With the exception of Walt Hunter, all of the reporting staff are mid level market at best.

CBS really should invest big time $$$$ into KYW, just like Comcast did for WCAU.

  10.

If you think about lead-ins, the fact the 10PM news on 29 has been around for decades, etc., that should be happening anyway--that spot is designed more to try and annoy 6 than anything.

It'd be news if the 10PM on 17 was beating FOX regularly--and for a bit, there were some days where they were and it was competitive.

It'd also be news if the 10PM news on FOX was the market's #1 late news or close to it, or if GDP were making inroads again in the morning. There hasn't been any newspaper coverage on how May sweeps were for Philly. I guess it's safe to assume the status quo?

Im interested in seeing the numbers for GDP. #2 or #3 in the AM would be pretty impressive.

OAN: Im glad viewers are taking a liking to Ian & Lucy at 10pm.

  11.

Kenneth Moton announced that he is leaving 6abc for ABC News.

I think its safe to say if you're a good Anchor/Reporter in Philly, your next stop will be NY, or DC.

Philly seems to be a layover for many.

Long gone are the days of reporters sticking around for 10-20 yrs in Philadelphia.

    Congrats to Kenneth Moton.

  12. I honestly think Diana is eventually gonna leave pretty soon, maybe in the next year or so. Therefore Lori gets promoted to evenings, and Shirleen becomes morning and noon anchor.

But she could have only just been hired to do the 12pm show, and report in the evenings. There are very interesting things happening at 7 Lincoln Square.

I wonder how the other anchors and reporters are feeling about the new hire.
