  1. I'm pretty sure it depends on the preceding program as to whether or not there are commercials between the credit roll and the newscast.

That's why I asked the question about what it usually does. When one station goes straight to news and one goes to two commercials and they are on the same network that comes down to individual blocking decisions and where to sell ad space. The previous program wouldn't be relevant here because it was the same, but would be if it was say the first evening newscast coming out of syndication where your end times would be different.
  2. Right, I was thinking it needs a bit of work myself, I think it would look better if they did a credit roll tease, quick break and then cold open, only because it looked like they went from a tease into a tease with no warning. It really should be broken up somehow or have one of the two formats chosen to be the tease or open. Maybe they should just start with the cold open during the credit roll like some of the cable networks do?

My memory is foggy since I haven't been in town to watch it OTA with commercials intact in over a month, but how did it normally go? Credit roll to open or Credit roll to commercial to open? Everybody is blocked slightly differently as we know.

  3. Did you edit this down from the original length or did they literally hop credit roll promo to cold open? WXYZ did something weird tonight too for sweeps, a cold tease at the end of the A block ala WPIX, the tease was nearly identical to that in format. Our opens are always cold as well but have 2 commercials shoved in the middle after the credit roll.... so you are probably right that it's a sweeps thing for ABC7. I like it better than the talentless open into live read myself, plus it sounds perfect because it is prerecorded. No chance of stumbling this way. I kind of hope they keep it as a feature and don't one off it.

  4. Look, I Know it's bad enough but DAMN, Is Detroit that desperate to the point where, though not limited to the city but still, squatters invade a home and that, I don't know, lazy enough to find their own place? From what i've seen in that clip, it seems it is a group, not individual, of squatters in the same place.

From the other 2 or 3 stories in the series it was 3 to 4 people. And yes it is that bad, they have been at this with the bank on the eviction story since early march iirc. I'm just glad it was pop and not something worse.
  5. This seemed like an odd story, a WXYZ reporter got hit with coffee while trying to talk to some squatters she helped evict. Then they came back during the live shot twice and threw BBQ sauce on the live truck.

Okay, I just had to throw this out there. Here's a clip of Mr. G trying to do 'something' to Kaity Tong while in the middle of the broadcast! Video Credit: Jaynorris117

    Here's him with Jodi Applegate:

And here he is with Tamsen Fadal:

That's called a schtick, nothing horribly creepy although he does stand a few inches to close and it looks awkward. But he is doing this stuff to elicit reactions from the anchors and be a clown, that pretty obvious. If it was a problem it wouldn't be happening or he would be standing there with a guy or alone.
  7.

Am I the only one here that believes that GMA is stocking too much up on women and that they can't run a successful morning show with virtually all women at the helm? If the Today Show was more or less all women, people would think they were batshit crazy and give them hell for it. I don't see that as much for GMA.

Women are the audience for those shows. It would be batshit crazy to stock up on men, women... not so much.
  8. Maybe KGO anchor Carolyn Johnson might be one of the new anchors for either the new 11 am show, or the weekend morning show? The PR did say she accepted an opportunity to be anchor outside of the San Francisco market, and well hey WPIX is looking for new anchors and New York is outside the San Francisco market. Now if she is indeed going to WPIX and anchoring on weekends it would be a drag to go from a weekday schedule to a weekend anchoring/weekday reporting schedule.

But so is every other market, and who says she is going up and not down in market?
  9. WXYZ has swapped it's digital subchannels. LiveWell Network has been moved from 7.2 to 7.3 and Bounce TV has been moved from 7.3 up to 7.2, this was effective Monday.

  10. If the team gets deconstructed/canned.

Besides Roz it already has, so I imagine it wouldn't be awkward at all. She is the only original member from 25 years ago. Besides I think they would do a 30 and not 26th anniversary, but It really makes no difference who says "look our anniversary"! Over the prompter. The beat will go on, non awkwardly.
  11. No need to get bent out of shape over this. Age isn't really an issue given that with decent enough health and a relatively light workload, people can do their job beyond the age of 70. For example, WBBM's Harry Porterfield is 85 and still anchors/reports five days a week. Finally, with the recent executive changes at Disney/ABC, forgive me if I don't take too much stock in the imaginary 'powers that be' you are referring to.

Not bent out of shape at all, amused is more like it. You didn't look high enough: The imaginary powers that be are the grim reaper and god, we can argue about the latter, the former is a when not an if. I was trying to make a tongue in cheek joke with that about longevity or something but it didn't resonate like I thought it would. I'll have to try to get better writers.

Anyway Harry Porterfield is incredible, most people don't even make it to 85 let alone function that well. That's a very unique situation there. I suppose it all depends on if Ron wants to take it easy or not. Somehow I think they will be sold before Ron leaves but who knows. I'm glad to have the guy around, he livens it up a bit. I just wish he was younger so he would be around longer.

  12.

No, he joined from WMAQ early in '98. Floyd Kalber retired from the 6pm, Alan moved there from the 5pm, and Ron filled that spot. He then added the 10pm in 2002. Diann Burns left/was canned in '03, at which point Cheryl moved from weekends, and Kathy added the 10pm in addition to the 6pm where she'd been since '93. The current 10pm team has been in place for 11 years, longer than any other in the station's history, and possibly in town. The only lead team that might beat it would be Kurtis, Jacobson, Coughlin and Morris on WBBM in the 70s/80s.

FYI, if anyone ever has any tenure questions, I know the numbers way too well...one of those useless info things that I've got stored in the brain.

I should get an abbacus and a spreadsheet and start writing this stuff down (I already have too many Detroit numbers and other useless numbers in my brain and they are beginning to run together). Are you talking WLS tenure or Chicago News in general tenures? I might need some help on a few whenever I find time to make a chart. Lots of them are listed in bios though.
  13.

No kidding, Jerry just admitted to recently quitting smoking the other night. Mark then quipped that he's instead now huffing paint. Ron quickly tried to move on before anyone got in trouble. Cheryl then said something silly/awkward and everyone rolled their eyes. The 5 o'clock news in a nutshell. :D

For perspective, John Drury was 75 and Joel Daly was 71 when they hung it up. Both did have underlying health issues, but nothing serious at the time. Drury, however, was diagnosed with ALS within the year. If Ron stays healthy (he openly admits to abusing drugs and alcohol, but has been clean for 30 years), he COULD last 10 years, but I don't see it happening.

More of that wonderful chemistry we were talking about with Cheryl? She sounds like a 5th wheel. Ron is cool, I wish he could stay another 20 but I don't want the man to run himself into the ground doing it either. It's one of those things that happens every 10-15 years that a stations talent ages out. Ron joined in 200? from WMAQ didn't he? When these guys are gone the next aging out will be 2022 or something like that so not a lot of turnover but they are popular people.
  14.

Ron will be there until HE decides to leave. There is no way he is pushed, asked, etc.. to retire. Jerry doesn't appear to be in the best of health, so it would make sense to retire soon. In some sense, the same can be said of Linda.

Right, but that isn't my point. You are the one talking about pushing and asking. My point was that the man is 69 not 39... you do the math and tell me if he will be there another 5 or 6 years or not. The odds say he will not be 75 or 76 and still anchoring. Health and age become factors (see about the powers that be below). Linda looks fine, she broke her leg... not a big deal. Jerry is getting up there and I do worry about his health from time to time.

The powers that be I mentioned in the post you quoted were not the bosses at WLS. You read into that who or more like what they might be. It went right over your head the first time.

  15.

Karen is next in line to move and she would likely replace Linda and then possibly Kathy at some point. Ron is untouchab

Ron is 69 and is gonna retire sooner than later, Alan succeeds Ron. Tell the powers that be that Ron is untouchable... as much as I like the guy (and that is a lot), he doesn't have too long to go, the same goes for Jerry Taft (71) and Linda (67). Theresa Gutierrez and Paul Meincke aren't gonna be far behind. both have to be nearing the 65-70 retirement zone by now. Everybody else but Mark Giangreco and Jim Rose are still under 60. But there will be some major upheavals in the next 2-3 years. We haven't seen anything yet as far as these reshuffled newscasts go.

I have nothing against anybody at WLS (one of my favorite stations), but this seems like reality.

  16. It says a lot to me about how great 7 is that a newscast ranking 3rd in the demo is far below their standards. WGN Morning News is always my choice when I'm in Chicago, they're so funny. Is channel 2 still without a permanent female anchor in the AM?

You get that way after 20 some years as a number 1 in every time slot. It's a foregone conclusion major attrition and personnel changes will quickly impact abc7 at some point, it's a matter of when not if at this point. I think Babich will replace Judy Hsu and she will move to 4 to replace Linda Yu to be honest. Kathy should be on at 5, 6 and 10 and Cheryl needs to be moved to full time feature reporter. This new guy will probably remain a reporter for a while until Ron retires and Alan moves up, then he will end up at 4, they will not totally nuke and rebuild the morning news, they don't need to, it just needs a pick me up, Tanya Babich would provide that, she gives it energy when she is on with Hosea or Ben Bradley or most anybody else.
  17. The man and lady sitting at the desk are the weather man and traffic lady. The man and lady doing the weather and traffic are the actual anchors, well Sandra was in for Lori. They did a switch to fool the viewers for April Fools day.

Ah, I gotcha, that worked pretty darn well then. They fooled me.

  18. I'm kinda confused as to what was so amazing... It looks pretty normal and standard to me.. I wasn't wowed by anything there. What did baffle me was that this is not a normal thing. What were they doing before that must have been completely outdated to make this so different?

  19. Average viewer does not choose newscasts based on the opening voiceover...

Not only that but the average viewer is probably 1/10th as in tune as we are on the technical side. They simply don't care that much.
  20. This should probably go somewhere in the Chicago board but...

She just left WEWS and some people have said that they delivered horrible ratings under her leadership, so what makes WFLD think that she can help to improve them?

Anyone with 50 cents and a monkey could make WFLD do better than they are now. A 1.7 rating at 9pm? Certainly things were nowhere near there at WEWS. More importantly than ratings she knows Chicago having been ND at CLTV.
