That’s got to be a rhetorical question, no? This board exists for people to express their opinions. What they actually do may not come close to reflecting the opinions expressed here. I was giving my two cents. That’s not a crime. Your post is the sort of comment I could copy and paste as a reply to anyone’s post here in any thread on the entire board and it would work more or less. I’m essentially arguing that it’s gonna be very very hard to pull off if he’s that bad off already and it will be very difficult to keep it from being a noticeable distraction. If you turn it around and make it about him but let another reporter or even an anchor report on it it’s a much gentler ride. You also don’t have to deal with things around midstream when he gets too far gone to report. So I disagree with their strategy here. Given the general progression of a cognitive disease like this it probably won’t be a real long running series. Maybe you get a year or two out of it?
-
Ok now that’s a little much. Cue him live in studio saying he works for a different station or is in a different city or is a plumber or something. He should just gracefully be gone into the sunset. If they assigned another reporter to check in with him and did a series of reports in his honor that would make more sense.
-
Ironically he worked until his mind was going. My point was more that there comes a time when they appear to be past peak and the presentation isn’t what it was. At some point you run the risk of “see you Monday!” Becoming… uh… “Joe Anchor died in his sleep overnight” and it won’t even be all that incredible or surprising. The actuarial tables don’t care if he has ratings or not.
-
It’s unfortunate he’s not gonna get a few years with everything working the way it’s supposed to. 76 is a little old for him to have been still hanging around there if we’re all being honest. That seems to be happening in a lot of businesses these days. I say that as an outsider who watched similar things play out other places.

Toolis was a 2 year and done that came here from Seattle. Nothing bad but nothing special either. She is a south side native so that’s always a plus when they are local.
-
That explains why she doesn’t quite sound right. Her American accent is a put on most likely. I hope we keep Brian Lee here in Detroit if the alternative may be that sort of thing. We had Sonny Warner doing a few promos about 15 years ago or so… but she sounded reasonable.

It gives off AI vibes. I hope its a real person.
-
Please tell me that isn’t their normal voiceover….
-
My assumption is that like most people who don’t know when to ride off into the sunset there are signs he’s well past his expiration date.

On the contrary... you can be a street reporter turned long term fill in with a 12 credit hour weather certificate from Penn State and get stuck on the air during a tornado warning. Then a month later you do sports when the main sports guy leaves and find time to report in between in market 14. True story.
-
I think they have gotten better at editing. With WDIV an absolute dumpster fire 7 is the best station in town for what it’s worth.
-
Which station? WXYZ has been prerecorded for a couple years now at 11. You can tell because there are no anchor interactions with weather or sports. Unless they started doing that in the last month. The sometimes rough cuts not letting the anchor finish their sentence are another clue. All definitely more recent than fall 2024. Watching last nights show… it’s recorded for sure. Tonight’s had a live A block and then it was recorded.
-
I’ve been noticing more LIVE reports on WXYZ of late. I wonder if they are backing off the Scrippscast/Lets only record packages thing?
-
It isn’t like you can’t learn on the job from the two certified meteorologists and the weather producers. Plenty of amateur folks know their stuff.

I can't imagine Goudie being there until 77-80 years old. He's 70 after all.
-
I’m assuming he got bored in Toledo and wanted a change. A quarter century is a long time to be in one spot. Neither male anchor is great. 7’s shows still aren’t as bad as DIV’s. That place is hurting. Don’t really care about ratings for this thought exercise. Just that 4 makes tons more mistakes and has serious technical issues that would kill you before the day was out if you make it a drinking game.
-
Hopefully they have him anchor some too… they need a male fill in anchor in the evenings.

Their new graphics were inspired by a combination of brainstorming the most boring thing you make a lower third look like and someone on vacation watching the 2012 Scripps graphics and loving the way the transitions moved side to side. It is by far one of the worst looks in local TV today. The only graphics ABC ever had that I admired was what WLS had before they standardized everything. Those were pleasant to look at.
-
I’ve heard similar talk about that auction becoming a major upheaval in the broadcast TV industry as a whole so I would imagine the time is coming. At this point broadcast TV isn’t a growth industry.
-
Im honestly surprised they haven’t unloaded ABC and the broadcast stations with it by now.
-
Looks pretty nice… and blue…. Really blue… hope you can swim blue. Also somebody get that circle 7 on the floor an ABC logo…. Kidding. Nice to see at least one without it for a change.
-
By the time they get these out to all their stations it’ll be time for a new package.
-
What makes it the best station in their portfolio?
-
That’s the mostly likely scenario I think… break it up into pieces and sell it.
-
The only other one of the original 5 that refers to itself as Channel 7 is the orphaned one. It’s kind of surprising cause you’d think “channel x” would be a pretty standard thing across local TV. I don’t know that it really made all that much sense to go to ABC 7 in the first place. By the time they did it everybody knew the channel lineup no matter what city you were in.
