  1. With the most highly-contested US Senate race in the country underway, WMTW is adding a 7PM Saturday newscast on its CW-affiliated sister station WPXT starting August 31. Gotta grab as many of those sweet 2020 campaign dollars as you can...

I think the cable bundle is starting to burst and what's fueling the fire is the fact that AT&T (the same company that's started the whole carriage fiasco) wants to shift current DirecTV satelitte customers to streaming. So clearly that may be part of the reason why we've seen so many carraige disputes involving AT&T.

Looking back, I can clearly see why the Justice Department didn't want to allow the AT&T-Time Warner merger to go through in the first place, it has nothing to do with CNN's politics but rather the kind of stuff that it's playing out now, and it shows.

And before them Dish was the outlier for playing hardball with broadcasters and other content suppliers.

70 years ago today, WBTV 3 went on the air becoming the first television station in the Carolinas. Right now their special celebrating those years is on.

If you missed it, it's available on demand here:

I was thrown by the use of Howdy Doody in the retrospective until I remembered that WBTV was a secondary NBC affiliate for the first several years of its existence.

King 5 7, 9 & 10 pm weeknight anchor Amanda Grace posted on Facebook that tonight is her last night at King 5. Says she’s stepping away from local television for a new opportunity.

Sure would be nice to have her back in Boston - Channel 7 is slowly imploding.

    Hopefully with a better ending.

Here in Portland, WCSH morning co-anchor Lee Nelson and evening co-anchor Cindy Williams have been married for 30 years. Another marital union between morning co-anchor Sharon Rose (now Sharon Rose Vaznis) and reporter Chris Rose ended in divorce. Chris Rose eventually left the station and is now with the University of New England.

Why would Hearst make it such that only the evening edition of NewsCenter5 would be available to stream?

As clarification, of the 4P-630P block, only the 6PM portion would be available on-demand on their own website if they follow their usual protocol. Currently, the 4P and the 5P-630P newscasts are available on-demand during the window between newscasts up until about ten minutes before the next one. That doesn't apply to NewsON, where all of their newscasts for the current and previous day (but not Chronicle) are available. Curiously, their 7PM newscast isn't available on demand on the WCVB site, but Chronicle is.

    Long overdue.

This likely means that only the 6PM newscast will survive as being available on demand on the WCVB website due to Hearst's bizarre policies (their on-demand newscast availability maxes out at 90 minutes.)

  9. I think they just swapped Me-TV and H&I, that's all. I think MyTV is still on 51.3

Yep, and Escape is still at 51.4. It's an OTA coverage upgrade for MeTV and a PQ upgrade for an overstuffed WPXT.

  10. Former WGME anchor Doug Rafferty has died at 66. His death was mentioned in passing at the end of the A block in their 5PM newscast and wasn't mentioned again during the 5PM-630PM news block. The exact same script (and video montage) was recycled for the 11. Curiously, Rafferty was seen but not heard (his booming baritone was a noteworthy aspect of his presentation.)

A possible reason for the cursory mention of Rafferty's passing: After an on-air stroke in 2006, he was relegated to mostly behind-the-scenes work at a sharp reduction in pay. He left WGME, took a job with the State of Maine and subsequently reached an out-of-court settlement with Sinclair on an age discrimination claim.

The Indy Star had a writeup on Rafferty focusing on his stint at WTTV
