The second-shell conflicts might be the holdup here. Evansville is especially problematic as Nexstar would control every commercial station except one (WFIE). However, in that case, WEVV would be nothing more than spectrum bait otherwise as there is no news operation there.

Have the stations that have seen major investments (or dis-investments) seen ratings changes? In the case of Memphis, WATN has three strong competitors. I am sure the competitors still wish that Sinclair got WREG...[/quote/]

agreed with you, but one question: where would CBS go if WEVV decides to go dark in broadcasting terms?

  2.

I think one of the big reasons the WQCW deal went down is because Excalibur's owner, Don Ray, was the longtime general manager of WSAZ, and even was a regional VP under Gray's ownership of the station. Once the deal goes down, I imagine that any efforts in programming WSAZ's "myZ" subchannel will shift to WQCW, including their prime time news.

Since WQCW is technically licensed to Portsmouth, Ohio, It would be interesting to see if the efforts focused on Ohio and Kentucky....but I imagine it will be an extension of WSAZ's current focus on the Huntington side of the market with a taste of Charleston news thrown in there.

The real question is if WQCW is going to grab the My Network TV for its primary channel or secondary channel, because the primary channel is the CW.

I understand that WIBW-TV has My Network TV on its sub-channel in Topeka.

  3.

KSEE dropped Chapin in 2009 in favor of John Young, because Granite mandates their stations use him as their announcer,

Really, Never knew that until now! John Young does VO's for KAKE-TV aka KAKEland in Wichita, Kansas and KARK in Little Rock, Arkansas.

KAKEland is the nickname for the extension for its full power and low power stations.

  4.

Wouldn't shock me, also thinking music will be The Rock and John Young will stay their VO.

I am going to be safe and say U-Phonix or The Rock and VO would be John Young and right now as I look at the NMSA site KSEE is using both Scott Chaplin and as of now, It would be John Young.

and yes I have the resources on what packages with both VO's using the NBC Collection and the Tower:

The first Monday since the reopening of FCC site and we have a NEW M&A Tonight!!!

Anyone thought that Bob Prather was going sit out after he left leading Gray Television, you have another thing coming. Hell, I didn't see this coming.

Through the paperwork, Prather through his firm Heartland Media, LLC, is buying Smith Media's last station, Utica's WKTV for $16M. The APA was made out on October 1st.

I knew Boston Ventures weren't going to hold that sole station for long. And I did state that Gray should've gotten it. But I never thought a former Gray leader would even come close to acquiring a station after he left from a company that had a massive chain of stations. Now I'm not sure if he's going to even try to acquire more stations, as it's getting even harder to form a new group, while many groups that are already here are trying to merge with each other. It's going to be a very hard sell.

Is Heartland Media, LLC is going to be part of Gray Television or a separate media group?
  6. Gray Television has a wild new logo. Gone is the conservative oval and in is...well, click the link. Unfortunately I can't post the image here because of image extension restrictions.

Meanwhile, without Fox, WCCB is turning its attention toward local sports. They secured a contract to show UNC Charlotte football games (the team started up this year) and could soon be the TV home of Charlotte Knights baseball. The football games apparently have attracted four times the projected viewership.

WIBW has the new.gray tv logo.as well.
  7.

Yeah I'm not too sure when the new set for KGPE will debut. The Bee stated Sunday, but they were still at the old studios. So it'll probably still safe to say they'll get theirs in operation, before KSEE set gets done, by the time the November books happens. Here's a promo vid of the new "CBS 47 Eyewitness News" which you hear a little more of a 'new theme'.

It might be the new cut of the CBS news enforcer collection that kgpe Is using.

  8. I was first thinking, why wouldn't ZGS scrape some chump change and acquire it. I wouldn't even be shocked if NBC go ahead and resell it to ZGS proper in the not too distant future. Maybe in the interim, NBC could use enough capital to give them some infrastructure (build them a new set and get some up-to-date equipment, etc.), and then ZGS would take over the day-to-day managerial ops.

I have to agree with NBC buying the licensed.assets and have ZGS run the station.

  9.

    News Station gone from WSYR.

Next stop...WIVT, the station using 17-year-old TVbD graphics? If there's any real bad sheep in that area of the country, it's WIVT. Seriously, those graphics are old (they blew KOTA out of the water years ago).

I think WSYR went with Aerial* by Stephen Arnold Music for their newscast and WIVT on another hand needs an serious overhaul on its graphics because they were made in the late 1990's.

*indicated Aerial is being used by Kansas First News in Topeka, Kansas.

  10.

...but you were the one who suggested LIN buy WAOE...

That's when I realized it would be shell corporation bait because its an low rated TV station. I personally think that LIN buying it now as an standalone station, is zero percent.
  11.

If Nexstar passes on WMYD & KOFY, what I don't want to see is them getting gobbled up buy a "Spectrum Speculator". Those two stations are too good to be sold by a company that they only care for is to cash-in at auction time. Those stations will go bye-bye post-auction, if that's the case. I wished Fox would acquire WMYD, but it can't happens because it has to keep the eight separate owners rule.

I think the question is why would LIN want a low-rated station in a sub-100 market, like WAOE. Many of these groups would want a leading station. Yes LIN own 7 sub-100 market stations (2 involves using its shell card, Topeka & Youngstown), but most are among the top rated. It would be stupid for LIN to just have a low-rated MyNetworkTV stated and have not have one of the bigger stations like WMBD, WEEK or WHOI. AFAIK, WAOE is basically shell bate.

Agreed! it would be stupid to have WAOE go to LIN when its a shell bait! and I thought Savannah, Georgia's FOX affilate was under the shell card as well.
  12.

WEEK to Hubbard? WAOE to LIN? What reason would Hubbard or LIN have to purchase a station in a sub-100 market?

AFAIK, LIN bought New Vision's station group and it came with the SSA agreement to operate three stations.

otherwise, I personally would think that Sinclair/Nexstar are not really going to divest any stations at all unless the FCC has a really really hard time with their ownership proceedures with an TV station.

  13.

I don't see why a triopoly is legal. I'm just waiting for the day when Sinclair or Nexstar will end up owning an entire market.

I am waiting for that too, except in Peoria they are going to start really over doing it with the stations that they own and/or operate completely when the station is under an LMA and either one of them is forced to sell it to an new owner and break the agreement.

If Nexstar wants a station to divest.....they should consider dumping WDHN in Dothan, AL.

and when is Nexstar going to dump WDHN? maybe one to five years from now? I remember the sale to KBTV to one of Sinclair's shell group called Deerfield Media and it was Nexstar's first divesture since the company was formed in 1996!
  14. I agree re: Fort Wayne, they got away with it in Evansville and Granite already has the situation so it is basically status quo. WMYD and KOFY I definitely see sold off (probably as duopoly bait for the existing owners in their markets - perhaps Fox Broadcasting for WMYD into a duopoly with WJBK and Cox Media for KOFY into a duopoly with KTVU?) since top-15 markets are not in Nexstar's DNA. Binghamton is pretty much status quo as well due to the fact there are essentially two operations given the market size. Duluth would probably be KBJR and KRII to Nexstar proper and KDLH to Mission - no effective change. It is Peoria and Syracuse where the troubles lie...

It might be that the WSYT deal to Cunningham was rejected but it appears somewhat unclear...if so, then something there would need to be sold off to another operation. But who? If forced to sell something in Syracuse, Hubbard comes on my mind first due to adjacent assets, while in Peoria, the first on my mind is Quincy, also due to adjacent assets in similar small-medium markets.

Some of those Sinclair/Nexstar LMAs may end up being bait for the other side in trades...

What do you mean by those Sinclair/Nexstar LMAs may end up for the bait for the other side as in the selling or trading off?

  15.

Peoria is definitely a messy one, as is Syracuse. Maybe the Sinclair/Barrington deal was on hold awaiting this for a potential 4-way, 2-owner deal?

    How I can see Syracuse:

    WSTM - Sinclair proper

WTVH - break LMA, to Mission with LMA Nexstar (sister to WSYR) - or keep LMA, sell/trade to Deerfield (Nexstar could have to take over a Sinclair asset fully somewhere else)

WSYR - Nexstar proper - status quo

WSTQ (LP) - Sinclair proper, as a low-power it can be with anyone

WNYS - RKS Media, LMA Sinclair - status quo

    WSYT - Cunningham, LMA Sinclair

Luckily, WNYS being LMA'd from an extra party and WSTQ being low-power makes it a little clearer so it can be done without creating another new shell, although Nexstar might rather just ship WTVH to the WSYR offices instead. That would require breaking an LMA though. Not sure what other owners could be interested in Syracuse; Raycom and Gray are too far from their base (they have pretty much nothing in the Northeast), and the other big names are likely not interested in a mid-small market (#84) in a political wasteland. Hubbard might be the most likely, as they have assets in Rochester and Albany. Even then, they would have to restart everything for WTVH.

Peoria is even more complicated. One possibility (the only one I can think of with no divesting and competition in the market):

WHOI - Sinclair proper, break LMA and start new operation

WEEK - to Mission, LMA Nexstar with WMBD

WMBD - Nexstar proper - status quo

WYZZ - Cunningham, LMA Sinclair with WHOI

WAOE - Four Seasons, LMA Nexstar

Without breaking the LMA, there would likely need to be a new owner entering the market and something would have to come up for sale, or Nexstar would have a monopoly on news operations. It's just so complicated...

Here is how I see the Peoria/Bloomington Market:

WHOI-Sinclair proper without the LMA, restart operations and potentally regaining Master Control operations from WEEK

WEEK-to Gray Television or Hubbard Broadcasting

    WMBD-Stays with Nexstar

WYZZ-Cunningham or Excallibur Broadcasting, LLC with WEEK

    WAOE-LIN Media, LLC

Why divest when they can simply shift some of the licenses over to Mission, though I would imagine the already messy ownership situations in Syracuse and Fort Wayne would only get messier if Nexstar were to acquire Granite as a whole.

    Agreed!

  16. I have tapes from that era as well from WIBW, KSNT and an short clip from KTKA on one from the late 80's and also, I think WIBW-TV 13 used the talents name and (Making a Difference Slogan) on 13 Sports and or News.

All I can remember from 1989 was the weekend open for when KSNT was known as the Kansas State Network Topeka and used KSN news. However, on a different note, I would like to figure out WIBW's news theme and the composer who written the piece in those days.

  17.

    KSNF 10pm, May 25, 1992:

(A block missing but it has a close)

Interesting to see how KSNF was branding at this time. In 1990, SJL Communications bought the Kansas State Network and cut costs by severing the microwave link between Wichita and Topeka and Joplin. While their Wichita (and Topeka) outlets had rolled out new logos in 1986 and slick Television by Design graphics in 1988, their Joplin station was using a modestly updated version of the network's mid-80s branding, complete with old "KSN" logo and that yellow-orange-blue stripe pattern.

is there anymore of KSNT with the new logos from 1986 with the same graphics from KSNW-TV?
  18. You are correct. Gray will launch WRGX-LD on June 1, 2013. WSFA and WJHG will be removed from cable and satellite when this happens. WRGX will be located on WTVY's 2,000 ft stick at the 1,577 ft mark. It will be a directional signal toward the Dothan DMA.

wow, its about time that the Wiregrass reigion gets an NBC affiliate of its own, I would applaud Gray Television for that.
