  1. Staff at KFOR/KAUT were evacuated early this morning (July 20) when a piece of equipment belonging to the Uninterrupted Power Supply unit in the duopoly's rack room suffered a catastrophic failure around 3:40 a.m., with staff reporting power flashes in that area. Smoke from the fire could be visible within the KFOR weather center, as staff were preparing for the station's morning newscast, which was delayed by one hour due to the fire and evacuations (an impromptu newscast was streamed on Facebook Live during the 4:00 a.m. hour, with KFOR presumably carrying a feed of Early Today once master control operations resumed around 4:30 a.m.).

Once NewsChannel 4 This Morning went on the air at 5:00 a.m. after Oklahoma City Fire Department officials gave the all-clear for staff to return to the building, since the computers powering those aspects were offline, pre-roll video footage, the time/temp/logo bug and lower third graphics were absent for much of the program (side-by-side graphics and weather graphics were not affected). The computers delivering the affected footage and graphics were brought back online by 7:00 a.m.

As a side note, when noting the age of the affected equipment in an interview with reporter Ashley Kringen during the morning newscast, KFOR/KAUT president/general manager Wes Milbourne confirmed that pre-construction preparations on the new studio facility previously announced to replace KFOR's 63-year-old building are underway, rounding the completion date to be sometime around 2018.

Did KFOR get a new set recently? That set looks newer than the one I recall.

  2. I already mentioned that, but what about KAGS? Will it get a new logo too, or just retain its current logo? And I might have to ask the same thing about KIDY.

I doubt KAGS would get a new logo that dumped their call letters in favor of a channel number ... their call letters were picked specifically to tie the station to the Texas A&M Aggies. It'd be foolish to give that up, but we are talking about TEGNA, so ...

  3. Oh please,

Greg Bledsoe is barely old enough to buy booze, and pair him up with Kushi who will probably sit there and cut the crust off his PB&J while keeping him hydrated with a juice box.

Are they looking for some kind of "reverse" Carlos and Lisa (KUSI) look?

"Did you wear your Star Wars jammies last night Greg?"

Bledsoe graduated college in 2001, which makes him 36 or 37. Young, but certainly not a baby.

  4. And speaking of flagships, WJLA and its sister cable channel Newschannel 8 as of recently, are also Sinclair's flagship stations

Well, as much as an overkill as it is, like Mrtraveler01 has mentioned, they did manage to get a news operation on a station that lacked one.

What about KQUI? Are they starting a news operation of their own?

I still think that if/when KUQI gets news, it'll be from another Corpus Christi station (likely Tegna's KIII, which was going to offer news under the previous deal that fell through, before Sinclair swooped in) or from a Sinclair station in another Texas market, such as KGBT in Harlingen. To start their own operation, they'd have to build a whole new facility since their offices are in a cramped space in a downtown high-rise.

  5. Regarding Tegna and the Tribune stations, there are several they could pick up easily as duopoly pieces without touching the cap and at a fairly low price, in Washington DC (although it breaks up a news partnership), Houston, Dallas and Portland OR (if the FCC permits such).

If WFAA were to get a sister station, I think it's more likely/realistic they'd wind up with London Broadcasting's KTXD. Tegna bought most of the rest of London's stations a few years ago.

  6. It's only verbal at the moment... I've been watching some of the live streams. Anchors and reporters are saying "News 3" now. Expect a big change soon.

Probably waiting for the new set (and presumably new graphics) to debut ...

  7. I was watching KUVE news tonight, and they were showing a tribute to their employees who are retiring from the station after tonight. There are soooo many of them, I believe 9 employees. It made me sad. I'm surprised KENS down the road, also a TEGNA station, has not announced anyone retiring from their station (yet).

KVUE did get hit hard. Their news director, chief meteorologist, chief engineer (who helped sign the station on in the 1970s), a news producer, local sales manager and longtime receptionist were among those who took buyouts. Couple that with their GM and main male anchor leaving next month (unrelated to the buyouts) and some serious rebuilding is required.

They also lost their storm chaser in the high floodwaters this week. Not a good time at KVUE.

  8. One person that took a buyout from another group was hit with a 40% tax bill on 25 grand buyout.

    Ouch!

Add KHOU weekend meteorologist Mario Gomez to the list.

On the 40 percent tax bill, if they took it as a lump sum, that makes sense. If they're going to continue to be paid every two weeks, as they are now, until they reach the total number of weeks they're entitled to, taxes should stay about the same.

Could this be a sign Fox is going to put KICU in the spectrum auction? Of all the SF stations, it has one of the highest values on the FCC list. KTVU Plus on 2.2 or 2.3 makes way more sense than KTVU Plus on 36, IMHO. Seems like that'd be confusing to viewers.

  10. Sorry for not paying attention here, but what if someone is on the buyout eligible list, but chooses not to take the buyout?

The package must be pretty sweet since I have not seen any bad words from any of the players...or is there a non-disclosure ???

Just not seeing many details anywhere.

It's 2 weeks of pay for every year of service.

  11. I don't see such at other Tegna stations...why are they taking it out on Austin?

Tegna allowed GMs to exempt some people from the buyouts. Many stations exempted the on-air people. KVUE didn't exempt anyone, thus the exodus we are seeing now.

  12. Sounds like the new norm a syndicated show get cancelled the station starts a 4pm news. It seems certain groups are news heavy while others groups bask at the 4pm hour w/ Judge Judy, Oz, Phil, Ellen. Are there any stations carrying Ins Edition, EXTRA, Access Hollywood at 4 or 4:30?

KPRC/Houston does news at 4 and has Extra at 4:30. KSAT/San Antonio airs Inside Edition at 4 followed by Entertainment Tonight at the highly unusual time of 4:30. Both stations are owned by Graham Media.
