  1. So, something interesting, be it very grotesque, on tonight's news.

Channel 7 covered a grotesque murder of a mother in the Bronx. Then, Josh Einiger noted that this family had dealt with an issue like this before. They flip to video of Jeff Pegues and Liz Cho from 2006 covering it, when the victim's mother was brutally murdered.

While it is nice to see Jeff Pegues and Liz Cho get a throwback moment, man this was creepy.

Good old EWN: If it bleeds, it leads.

  2. Considering the reports of all the other problems during construction in the newsroom, and the strong letter sent yesterday by the union to station management about the conditions, I'm skeptical about the internet outage. If there was this issue, why was there weather and weather graphics during the 10 pm show? Something just doesn't make sense when you put the newsroom issues in the equation,. Fox5 newscasts are dated and tired, often PR sessions for Fox shows and unwatchable. I turned in for a few minutes last night out of curiosity and the product was significantly better than the regular product.

  3. Another re-cycled weather person re-appears.

Sally Ann Mosley, former of WNBC 4, on the news live at noon, anchored today by Kristen Shaugnessey. Normally Roma Torre is the anchor.

She had also been on News12 New Jersey.

  4. Atlanta's secondary PBS station WPBA has reacted an agreement with PBS to become a full service PBS station, allowing it to better compete against GPB's WGTV. Until now WPBA could only air 25% of PBS content.

I would assume that WGTV would broadcast shows in their prime national days/times, and WPBA will air them on alternate days. That is what is done in DMA 1, where WNET airs the national schedule, WLIW (owned by WNET) and NJTV (managed by WNET) air them at different times. Considering PBS does not often repeat shows this seems to work.

  5. History will be made in Buffalo next month on WGRZ: TWO women will split the duties on the weekday evening newscasts! Maria Genero will do early evenings (5 to 6:30pm) while Heather Waldman will do the 10pm (on WUTV) and 11pm newscasts. They'll replace Kevin O'Connell who left the station earlier this month. Good for them!

Why history? Many stations across the country from DMA 1 and down have female chief meterologists, some for many many years.

  6. Last night on News12 Hudson Valley they used a report from i24 news. Even after the report they directed people to i24.tv for more information. I'm assuming they'll be talking about a merger or the new brand on air in the coming weeks.

Is that any different from WCBS airing a CBS News report, etc? The company press release says they are in the same division. It did not say that News12 is becoming i24 -it is already carried on Optimum and I believe Charter. i24 is an international news channel and hopes to get a much bigger footprint in the US. It makes sense to put both news operations under one division (though i24 is actually run out of Tel Aviv). News12 is a hyper local news outfit and will not change all that much other than carrying some reports, just like the carry Cheddar business news.

  7. Here is the actual press release from Altice:

    http://alticeusa.com/sites/default/files/pdf/Altice%20USA%20News%20Release%20%281%29.pdf

Reading through it, it seems they are moving News 12 networks and the US operations/distribution of i24News (it has expanded to Charter Spectrum and one other MSO) into its own division. Nothing indicates there will be any other changes to News12 operations other than moving Patrick Dolan more out of the picture (which should be no surprise). It will allow Altice USA, which is being separated from the parent company, to push for more i24 News carriage across the US and probably some sharing of i24 content on News 12 networks.

  8. If you go to KDNL's Twitter account, they had to completely purge it because it was so linked to the Allman Report that it was basically a duplicate account. That's not good social media acumen, to say the least.

KDNL hasn't broadcast news for over 15 years. What else would they have to post other than Allman's rants?

  9. I have a hard enough time remembering the words to the current EWN theme.

God forbid we have to learn the words to a new theme song. That could be quite difficult for older and less smarter people.

You really think the majority of the general viewing public turns to a newscast because of the theme? I would argue they like familiarity but the driver isn't a theme by itself. The exception is when the theme becomes iconic - like "Get Closer to Your World" in Philly. When ABC changed it, there was push back. But even though WABC has used a version that has some similarity to the Cold Tar theme originally used, it's not that iconic. I doubt most folks turn the station for a song, or a graphic, or a set color. Content, reporters, yes. That's what counts.

  10. I don't mean to sound stupid but I didn't know that people could fill in at other stations while working at one.

It usually happens with stations under common ownershp. WNBC has pulled staff from WVIT (Hartford) and WCAU (Philadelphia) over the years. WNBC staff has filled in on the others as well. Years ago, one of the NBC Miami staff worked at WNBC while his wife was in grad school, then returned to WTVJ.

  11. Altice USA and Starz has finally come to a new agreement after 6 weeks off the air. Altice (Cablevision) says the stations will be back on the lineup by the end of the month. On Wednesday, the day the announcement was made, Several Starz/StarzEncore stations returned (not all pre darkness) and only one so far in NJ is in HD. No VOD yet, but Optimum credentials are being accepted on the Starz App/website.

  12. NBC did not use their 11 PM weekday anchors after the Superbowl.

Considering the late hour after a full length This is Us, it would have been a dumb stunt anyway. Besides, Stefan Holt was in Minneapolis. It would have been impossible for the weekday team to be there. I know personally, I did not last til the news, don't know anyone who did.

  13. Although not involving a broadcast station, Altice USA (Optimum) in NJ, NYC Outer Boroughs, LI and CT dropped Starz and Starz Encore on Jan. 1. Optimum claims that Starz wanted a significant fee hike while customers can purchase their OTT service directly from Starz for less. Optimum also claims that Starz had low viewership (which based on some of their other stations is hard to believe). Starz claims that Altice has no desire to negotiate in good faith. Altice has added the Cowboy Channel, Hallmark Drama, MGM and Sony as "replacements" which is total crap. Altice does not plan to adjust fees accordingly either claiming Starz was part of your bundle and we have the right to change service anytime. Many subscribers are upset and getting nasty towards Altice, and rightfully so. This is turning nasty and worth watching.

  14. WNBC and WNJU has established a bureau in San Juan to continue stories of the storm ravaged territory and the slow recovery effort. A dedicated bi-lingual reporter has been hired who will report for both stations, and will also provide reports for other NBC/Telemundo O&Os across the country. Per TV NewsCheck. There was a report during the 5 pm hour on WNBC this evening.

  15. Somebody mentioned that on this thread a while back. Although, it reminds me that Spectrum should have all cable systems get NY1 in every area of New York City.

I live in NJ. Work in NJ. It is a wasted station and has poor production values. I checked it out and it looked very amateurish during the day.

  16. Charter and Viacom agreed to extend the deadline short term as negotiations are proceeding. Some have made a valid point - most Viacom channels won't be missed if taken off and others have no specific purpose anymore. Viacom has a lot of work to do to make itself relevent again.

  17. Well, you're right. I'm from Staten Island and I don't even have News12 on my cable package. So it doesn't really cover all of the boroughs in NYC.

If Staten Island is not an Altice (Cablevision/Optimum) territory, there is no News12 Staten Island. The News12 stations were placed where the old Cablevision had their systems: Long Island, a good portion of NJ, Bronx, Rockland/Westchester and Connecticut. Altice has extensive coverage in NJ, and made deals for Comcast areas in Essex and Middlesex County and TimeWarner/Spectrum in eastern Bergen to carry News12NJ. No deals with Verizon or satellite. Optimum only just added NY1 to their lineup in NJ, and it is no where the quality of News12 plus only reports NYC news, which is not as important as having a NJ based broadcast.
