  1.

Wow, amazing. A station actually *welcoming* a news veteran, and not trying to shove him out the door (rocking chair optional).... Congrats Mr. Bibb. Cleveland is lucky and fortunate to have you.

  2. He anchored at KDFW for many years, did Evans retire from KDFW before or after the switch to Fox?

Evans retired in 1993 so it was beforehand. I didn't realize he'd been at Ch.4 that long. Sad to lose someone like him, but he had a long career, and retired on his own terms (especially without someone higher up telling him he's too old/long in the the tooth/overpaid, like what is likely happening now).

  3. Weigel is launching yet another multicast network: Start TV will debut September 3 on Weigel- and CBS-owned stations (with many of the CBS-owned affiliates carrying the network on subchannel slots currently occupied by sister-network-to-be Decades, though Weigel appears to be moving Decades to its own stations in markets such as Los Angeles and Chicago). The network will focus on police and detective procedural programs with strong female leads (such as The Closer, Medium, The Good Wife, Crossing Jordan, Cold Case, Profiler and [early 2000s Lifetime series] The Division).

I wonder how far into other markets Start TV will get, especially those with little to no room for more diginets, and/or those affected by repacking.

  4. Some switches *still* have some unsettled dust (Detroit and Atlanta among them). Some affected markets turned out better than others in that regard. You hear stories later on of stations that _could have_ switched and didn't but were approached about it, like KXAS was by CBS during the mid-1990s big switches. Even though there have been national ratings wins over the years by both CBS and NBC, KXAS was better off not to switch. There is something to be said for stability.

  5. KTRK Chief Meteorologist Tim Heller announced that he’s retiring in January 2019 after 30+ years in broadcasting.

I’ve watched Tim on channel 13 since I can rememberer. Hoping that Travis Herzog gets the bump up to Chief. https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=1418823828217183

Hard to believe Tim is at a "retirement" age. He sure looked young when he did weather in DFW. Good luck to him... hope he finds something fulfilling.

  6. I can see having 2 if there's a special/severe situation, but in regular plain-vanilla weather days, the #2 would have to do something else (a-la Samantha on KXAS) like swap out every other weather segment, or one be there while the other gets a swig of something or goes to the bathroom.

  7. So many FOX O&Os are expanding newscasts on their stations, and you can add KDFW to the list. After recently expanding Good Day DFW to a 4AM start, KDFW now

is elongating back to the end of the show as well. Starting in September, KDFW FOX4 will extend the locally produced, #1 rated program to 10AM while pushing Live with

Kelly and Ryan out of the 9AM time slot it has long held since Regis and Kathy Lee. The show will move to 10AM under current plans.

The 4am start is one thing, but the additional hour to 10am is probably a bit much. Since Kelly & Ryan will move to 10am, it will be interesting to see what KDFW does at 11am. Wendy? The Real? I guess Uncle Barky didn't know that one yet.

  8. These posts make me think about who could "reunite" in the north TX market. The group that goes back the farthest that's all still "with us", would have to be WFAA's Tracy Rowlett, Iola Johnson, Troy Dungan, and Verne Lundquist. I very highly doubt that WFAA would do that kind of thing next year (their 70th), especially since they feel that Tracy Rowlett's departure was a salt-in-the-wound moment. The other stations don't have any group that goes that far back or more without someone who's passed on.

    So, cheers to WBZ!

  9. KXAS is entering a partnership with KRLD 1080, ending the latter’s partnership with KTVT.

I'd been hearing lately on KRLD several of the weather reports coming from KXAS' meteorologists instead of from KTVT, as well as a recent news report that came from a KXAS reporter. Too bad, but I guess it was somebody's business decision. The KTVT tie-in didn't seem like one that needed to go, but I guess having KXAS as a next choice will work out also.

  10. First time a 7pm news airing in DFW since KTXA 21 News: First in Prime in '06. (And I still miss that newscasts, they were DFW's KCAL.)

I wonder if this news will do any better in the ratings than the KTXA newscasts did.

  11. Did I see correctly that the DMA runs all the way from southwest Missouri to the Oklahoma/Texas line? I know that there's no big city between OKC/Tulsa and Texarkana/Shreveport, but that seems like a very long distance.

According to this map I found, it doesn't quite get to the TX line; McCurtain Co., OK and the SW counties of AR that border TX are part of Shreveport-Texarkana.

  12. They didn't "lose him". NBC just moved him to another one of their O&O stations.

Thanks for the clarification. I really wasn't aware of the exact details other than here-one-day-gone-the-next. Guess I could have looked closer at unclebarky's site, he's usually pretty good at getting departure info. Archer was an asset to KXAS' newscasts, and it's too bad he's not there anymore.

  13. I believe Johnny Archer is the new NBC 6 weekend evening anchor. He previously worked at NBC 5 in DFW. Johnny will replace Keith Jones who moved to weekdays.

That was too bad that KXAS lost him, he was really good.

KYTX has made changes to its morning show after the departure of previous co-anchor Clint Yeatts. The news show will now be dubbed "The Morning Loop" (other than KYTX being located on Loop 323 in Tyler, I'm not sure why that name). A new co-anchor, Mike Davis, will join recently-promoted Jen Moynihan (previously a weekend anchor at KYTX); the new anchors and new name will begin Oct. 30.
