scripps going overboard with ads. when you visit a scripps website it now takes you to an ad landing page for 10 seconds before taking you to the homepage.

KGTV's site already blocks users who have ad blockers. So this wasn't much of a surprise. But Scripps now is really wanting you to see banner ads on their sites, and I don't like that.

WWMT's news opens from 1996-2006 takes cues from the Hearst camera opens, when they used Signature. WISN (Hearst) is sort of literally across the lake from WWMT (at the time Freedom). They stopped using the music at the beginning of 2007 (switching to Enforcer) due to SESAC, and changed graphics and branding at the same time.

WXIN used a rip-off of the first generation Fox O&O graphics in their opens from 2006 until they went HD in 2009. The Fox O&O music was used though. Sister stations WTIC and WPMT used the actual Fox O&O graphics.

Nexstar is a prime candidate for Tegna by default just because, though they definitely have conflicts (Portland OR, Tampa, Jax, a good chunk of Texas, WDVM/DC may also be a problem)--but given they're based in Texas, I could definitely see them wanting WFAA and KHOU as a crown jewel. They'd also have a footprint in Austin again, and they'd get San Antonio--basically all of Texas's major metros. If Sinclair/Trib gets FCC approval, it may be worth the risk for Nexstar to sidecar some of those conflicts.

 

Hearst would be a good candidate too. They have a couple conflicts too, but I think selling WMTW, WHAS, WFMY and KXTV to a Nexstar or Scripps basically takes care of it. They get a powerhouse in Portland ME so they don't have to middle with WMTW anymore, they'd get a presence in DC beyond office space with WUSA, and they'd get some amazing Belo legacy stations that need help in return, and I have no doubt Hearst could rehab a lot, if not all of them back to their one-time dominance.

Nexstar is no longer in Jacksonville. Ironically, considering they bought the station from Media General in 2009, WCWJ has been sold to Graham Media Group.

KSTF had separate news programs, as stated, but the effectively died in the 90s. Can't forget that KDUH (predecessor to KNEP) had local news through the early 2000s - with KOTA newscasts gradually phased in. The last full local newscasts on KDUH were at noon, but were titled KOTA territory news (just have to find the DVD to see if it mentioned Scottsbluff in the title).

 

Plus I giggle when you notice that Gray effectively owns the region through 3 distinct out-of-market stations they own, save PBS. I'm surprised they haven't slipped a Fox affiliation in there...

Enough that KPNX has been ruined. Its enough for either KTVK or KSAZ to now win the Phoenix ratings.

I think KPNX is still the #1 station in the market. When TEGNA was Gannett, they have WSVN-ified their graphics and music before in 2008. That did not affect KUSA's ratings, and it might not have affected WTSP's ratings, either. The rest of the Gannett stations' ratings might also not have been affected. KARE was nice enough to keep their existing music, and KUSA was nice enough to keep their existing graphics on their teases (until 2012) and talent opens (also until 2012), and their existing music on their talent opens (until 2012) and closes (until February 2009). Gannett called themselves as being nimble at one point according to an old Gannett website. It said so on the first page of the company's annual report. Qwest also called themselves as being nimble through their slogan from 2010 until they were integrated into CenturyLink in 2011: "Get Qwest. Get Nimble". That was after they retired their "Spirit of Service" campaign, which they used from 2002-2008. Do you think TEGNA is still nimble, and how can that be compared to CenturyLink? As for the ratings in the Phoenix area, Scripps-owned KNXV is the number 2 station in the market.

Tribune Media is selling its interest in that website to Apollo as well. Their interest will shrink from 32% to 8%.

I wonder what will happen to that 8% stake when the Sinclair-Tribune deal finishes. CareerBuilder being partially owned by Sinclair doesn't make sense to me. When and if it's finished, I guess Sinclairibune will sell it by then.

I don't think that WOIO has a social media disaster fest like KXTV or WTSP. It's a bland Raycom station that has a few social media stories, yes. However, it's nowhere near the disasters at WTSP or even KXTV.

Did not realize that. However, considering how many people are cutting the cord and moving to OTT (over-the-top) services (like Sling TV, YouTube TV, PS Now and DirecTV Now), and the fact that now more people check local news on their mobile devices, the fact that those social media newscasts such as The Now were created might be to get viewers (especially younger people) back to watching local news on TV. The Now and other social media newscasts should have been done for as fast as Sonic the Hedgehog. They generate negative ratings.

Thanks. However, The Now should not have been created in the first place. I know Scripps was trying to be creative, but The Now might be the reason why KXTV and WTSP now have social media newscasts for EVERY newscast. Having WRTV not having it anymore, as well as the fact it's not on every Scripps station, and the fact its at 4pm only (unlike those 2 TEGNA stations) helps. It's Scripps' fault, and ESPECIALLY Denver 7 and 41 Action News' fault.

How were some stations, especially some of the original Scripps stations, get out of running it? There were rumors a long time ago KSHB was trying to axe it because it absolutely murdered their 5 and 6pm shows, but they're still airing it. They were one of the two test stations for it as well.

I'm not sure why WRTV got out of it. Maybe they realized The Now was hurting their 5pm and 6pm ratings. Anyways, what was the other test station for The Now? I forgot if I knew that before.

Did Scripps can The Now? WRTV isn't airing it anymore, moving Judge Judy back to 4 and putting Right This Minute on at 3.

Other than Indianapolis, what Scripps markets do not have The Now? Try to give me a complete list.

My gripe is this. Shouldn't stations be doing this kind of stuff on a regular basis, instead of just doing it on the day of the company's founding? I feel they're doing this on a corporate mandate, instead of doing it just for the sake of helping their communities.

I didn't know Nexstar had a second Founder's Day of Caring. But Nexstar needs to learn that once a year isn't "a regular basis". If Nexstar were a good company, chances are they might give out more community service, and perhaps own less television stations and have less layoffs, which could even lead to a conclusion that Founder's Day wouldn't exist. Since I have no actual TV, despite my interest in TV, and since I did not go out two days ago I did not notice that there was a second Founder's Day although I live in a Nexstar market. Happy late Founder's Day, everyone.

I have seen somewhere else (perhaps on this site) that a company called TAG made the ring graphics. Does anybody know what TAG stands for? And if TAG did not make it, might it have been made in-house?

But isn't it possible that KOAT used Image News in tandem with The One And Only from the end of 1999 until early 2000, using the pre-Hearst graphics and the camera mandate in tandem with one another (only the news opens and talent rejoins being the camera mandate and everything else in the pre-HA graphics - I noticed that's what KSBW did the first few months they used Image News)? Also, Conrad, didn't you live in Albuquerque or New Mexico at that time? If so do you also remember when in the fall of 1999 KOAT got its first H-A mandated set (it looked very similar to the one WTAE used from 1999 to 2007)? Or did you use to work for Hearst-Argyle?

I was born in 2003, and I always lived in Phoenix, Arizona, like 4 other users I know of on this site. I never worked for Hearst-Argyle, and I'm only 14. So, I don't remember exactly when KOAT got their first H-A mandated set. However, I still want you to give me the NewsActive3 compilation showing WCVB's "transition" opens (camera graphics with Newsmusic Central package). There seems to be no other signs of it on YouTube.

KCRA got their own version of Revolution in 2000. with a complete mandate thereafter until they switched to the NewsMusic Central Package in 2004.

 

Which was called B Package at the time. The duopoly of KCRA and KQCA were the only known stations using this version of B Package, which had the Where The News Comes First signature. Around December 2014, B Package was renamed Revolution after WMUR and WIS (a Raycom station) stopped using it.

In 2000. The NMSA says KOAT got Image News in 1998, which is incorrect.

So the Tegna departures just keeps on rolling. Looks like Vanessa Ruiz is not the only one who's leaving KPNX.

Also Kim Christiansen will replace Adele Arakawa at KUSA's 10pm broadcast when Adele retires. The date of Adele's departure have not been announced yet.

Sad, especially the fact that KUSA has had Adele for many years. When Tegna was Gannett, they were much better. They were a nimble company that cared about what they had been doing. Today, Tegna is nimble and creative, but sometimes they're bad. Chances are Tegna will hire KPNX a younger, cheaper investigative reporter and a producer who isn't so smart. Then people might end up watching more investigative reports on 15 and 5.

Yes sir they did as a matter of fact if I remember correctly KOAT got rid of the camera madate around 2003 but kept "Image News" until KOAT got the Newsmusic Central package (initially with the WTNCF signature despite having the "Coverage You Can Count On" slogan until KOAT switched to the CYCCO signature in 2005.

 

Also KOCO switched to the WTNCF signature for it's Opens and Talent Rejoins in 2010 but kept the "Live. Local. Late Breaking" signature for it's news closes until they got Strive in 2013.

Actually, KOAT used their own variations of the camera graphics between 2003 and 2004. In 2004, KOAT got the Newsmusic Central package, and KOAT also got the ring graphics later that year.

But WESH and WLKY first used the Newsmusic Central package at the same time as when WCVB debuted the ring graphics in Dec. 2003. Also, WLKY was misspelled as WKLY in the above post. I forgot to use this as a reply to the above post. Anyways, I still want a link to WCVB using the Newsmusic Central package with the camera graphics in 2003.

I was talking about WCVB. And besides, I already watched that video before.

Interesting, because on a collection of news opens from NewsActive3, I came across a WCVB open which used the NewsMusicCentral package but still had the camera graphics. Maybe they got the NewsMusicCentral package a few months before the rings graphics.

 

Initially I thought WESH was the first H-A station with the rings package. Afterall, they were the first one with the diagrid package and Strive; and they were also the first ex-Pulitzer station to use the camera graphics in 1999.

Where can I find that WCVB open? Give me a link; seems like the News Music Central package came out before the Hearst ring graphics; I thought both came out at the same time.
