Are Fox O&Os ever going to update?

And by extension, what does that mean for the LocalTV (ex O&O's)? Are they stuck with their 2006-era looks, or gradually move to variations of KDVR/KWGN?

2006 era looks? WDAF and KDVR are both owned by LocalTV and their graphics looking nothing similar.

I'm referring to the non-updated looks at KTVI, and a few of the other LocalTV stations. KTVI is running stock 2006-era FOX O&O graphics. KDVR got a new look only because they did it themselves. I haven't had a chance to see WDAF's, but I suspect it hasn't travelled across the state to St. Louis.

What did this "tweak" consist of?

They changed the "sliver" color at the top of the graphics Lower 3rd to white and made it larger. They also enlarged the "info pic" (I don't really know how else to describe it) to the right side of the lower 3rd.

I think they were supposed to go live back in April (and we were specifically told not to use them until given clearance...then we were never given clearance), so they occasionally pop up in our shows, but for the most part our producers don't use them.

I don't know if any of the other stations are using them.

WHBQ used what you just described, but that info pic area to the right goes outside of the safe zones (for 4:3 viewers, it's hard to see the entire image).

Not to forget, WGHP updated their graphics in-house when they converted to HD last year.

Although their logo bug just annoys the hell out of me because it's too small and off-center and moves too quickly:

And sometimes the top bar flips between "Fox" and "WGHP." Ick.

If that was the best they could have done, it might have been better to revert to their 1996-2006 horizontal logo and be done with it.

Cross-posted from the standardization thread:

New Fox O&O graphics are set to premiere in Houston October 2nd.

The lower 3rds are going blue and it appears there may be a redesigned bug in the mix as well.

(more on the bug: in our system the graphic template has a dead space marked "bug" that gives us an idea how many characters we can use on each line. In the current set-up, the dead space rectangle is - obviously - in the shape of the current logo design. With the updated templates, the bug is scaled down and flipped on it's side similar - in shape anyway - to the 90s "Fox XX" logo.)

They're also ditching the "rotating video boxes" backgrounds to the fullscreens.

Is this still set to happen?

If I'm not mistaken, WJW is now the only station left (out of the first Fox O&O group standardization) with the original V.1 graphics package and opens. Only their 7pm news has different - and animated - L3s, which were done in-house. The V.2 "infinite TV set background" look only extended to some promos and the morning traffic reports, but that's about it.

Open from last year. Virtually identical to what they had back in 2007. Still use it to this day. (They don't use Greg O' Neill for any VO work and haven't for years, but have kept his opens for some odd reason.)

Of course, WJW had been broadcasting their newscasts in HD already when the standardization took place, so they likely saw no reason to upgrade, especially after they were sold to Local TV. KTVI and KSTU since went HD, and took the V.2 graphics package.

IMO, I wouldn't mind the logo box going back to a horizontal shape. WJW kept their old logo as a secondary for years, and the logo shown on their website is horizontal.

Ok...so tomorrow (today for some of you) I get to see the new graphics in action when we do a run-though of my a-block in prep for launch next Tuesday. Apparently there are three color-schemes. We're going with "blue/gold" there's also "red/blue" and "red/gold" (I think that's what our special projects producer said).

This much I do know: the graphic's "sliver" is strictly for social media information. Tweet hastags (like KRIV's recently debut'd "#fox26forlife" image campaign*) and anchor social media handles will rotate. Anchor names and story information go in the main body of the lower 3rd.

Also, over the shoulders are going away completely in favor of plasma/rp monitors and "under the shoulders" graphics. I'll know more tomorrow when I actually see them in action.

*anchors, in order of appearance: Natalie Bomke, mornings sitting with Kristine Galvan (back to camera..she appears in a separate promo), Melissa Wilson, mornings with her two boys; Don Teague, evenings, with family; Melinda Spaulding, evenings; Jose Grinan (clapping at concert))

WJW is a unique station. They were if I am not mistaken the first FOX O&O to go HD. The case now is that they use if its not broken, don't fix it. I would love for them to go back to Fusion if and when they get the chance.

Found out this morning that the new graphics launch has been delayed. Latest date is November 12th, but we'll see if that actually holds up. From what I understand, all of the O&Os will begin using the new look at the same time.

WJW went HD in December of 2004. First FOX O&O and first in Cleveland as well. Sometimes WJW uses Power News for Mobile promo. WJW still uses Greg O Neil for open of newscasts and some station promos. Booth announcer Bill Ward was let go in March of 2011. The station uses Max McGill in promos and another VO. WJW uses V2 graphics in morning show, traffic, gas prices stings and 7pm with in house modify. Yes WJW is a very good station.

So it's Max McGill. Thanks. Had been puzzled for a while as to who he was. :)

After Bill Ward's dismissal (he had only been with the station since the early 80s) WJW has been rotating with different VO talent, mostly centered on Jeff Laurence, but Max and Chuck Matthews have done some stuff for them, too. Jeff and Chuck I know are from the Benztown Branding group. Max strictly does news promos.

WJW is owned by LocalTV, so that *might* have something to do with the graphics.

That **would** make sense, if it were not for KTVI, KDVR and KSTU getting the V2 look after the sale to LocalTV, because they hadn't converted to HD yet. (KDVR would then go on to do some minor modifications to the V2 look, including a redo of the rotating bug, before they scrapped it altogether). When they went to HD, WDAF and WITI debuted with their own in-house graphics, and as shown above, WGHP has a hideous in-house mutation of the V1 graphics that came with their HD conversion. So I guess it was a station-by-station deal all along.

It's only because WJW was already in HD that they never sought to go with the V2 look in total.

BTW, WJW did debut a new weather graphics package, replacing the one they've used since the 2004 HD conversion (V1 graphics and fonts were simply slapped on in 2007).

The funny thing is KSWB/San Diego has its own version of the Fox O&O graphics that they've used since they brought back its news department in 2008, they've have held up well for the most part and are actually more polished than either version of the real ones, the new WJW weather graphics would definitely fit with KSWB's Hothaus graphics, compared to their current weather graphics, which kind of clash with the rest of the package.

The main problem with the new weather graphics is that they use Verdana - or some variant of the font - instead of Univers. It doesn't match. Unless they are planning an in-house update that uses Verdana...

The old weather graphics even clashed with the V1 O&O package, though it was a simple matter of changing the fonts from Eurostyle - from WJW's 2002-2007 GO package - to Univers. (In another odd distinction, their weather set has most been unchanged from the station's 1996 news set, albeit with replacing some of the monitors with LCD screens.)

I actually like KSWB's Hothaus graphics. Some stations have applied them very nicely, while others haven't. (WAWS, I'm talking to you.)

In the case of WJW, it's actually Myriad that's used as the font for the weather graphics, which has a far cleaner look than Verdana. The Myriad font is actually quite similar to the font used in KSWB's graphics, though the font they use is a condensed version. The Arial Black font of KSWB's weather graphics doesn't match with the rest of their package either.
