Action Newsroom 1283
Tonight is the last ever broadcast of ABC's late night news program Nightline at 11:35 before is switches timeslots with Jimmy Kimmel Live which moves up to its former timeslot after late local news, battling against NBC's Tonight Show with Jay Leno and CBS's Late Show with David Letterman. Its last broadcast featured Barbara Walters interviewing musician and newly-minted American Idol judge Mariah Carey (Seriously, I don't give a crap ever but I had to type this in for historical issues), an interview with Zero Dark Thirty director Kathryn Bigelow and news of the perliminary hearings for Aurora movie theater shooter James Holmes beginning earlier today in Colorado. The program aired in this timeslot for 33 years until the announcement by ABC to move Kimmel up to 11:35, move NL back to 12:35 and create an hour-long expanded edition on Friday nights. This program has been a legend in the news industry and still is. Even though this is only a timeslot change and not a cancellation, I ask you: What are your fondest memories of Nightline during its 33 years at 11:35? And what do you think about the program's move to 12:35? Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/12358-last-nightline-at-1135-before-switch/ Share on other sites
PTVNews 194
Thinking traditionally, I think it will hurt Nightline a bit and mostly likely help Jimmy Kimmel. It's interesting though. I used to have to schedule and coordinate my TV watching according to when programs aired. However, ever since we got a DVR for the first time 3 years ago, time slot changes hardly matter anymore. Seems to me like it wold be that way for more people. Does anyone know if it will still be live on the east coast requiring them to stay til 1am? Live for live's sake doesn't seem worth it. Especially when half the country watches it tape delayed anyways. If I were in charge, I'd tape it several hours earlier most nights except for when being live is warranted. CircleSeven 1955
I just saw the sign-off and Cynthia did a good sign-off of Nightline's "swan song" at 11:35. This is a very poignant moment for the highest-rated late night program on television. ABC really did the dummy last summer moving Nightline. The major problem I'm having is what happens when a big news story breaks. The local news will be over and Kimmel comes on. I don't think they'll throw a special Nightline after the news anymore. This won't do anything but that would slowly kill Nightline. I don't think anyone would continue to watch Nightline after Kimmel is done because of the very late timeslot. Some folks that didn't see the new Nightline plug would probably think on the day of the change "where's Nightline?" after the end of Kimmel and turn on another channel (probably a cable channel). ABC did this same practice having this Nightline Prime on when Kimmel was moved up 5 minutes to 12:02am back almost two years ago, and that appeared to be short-lived. Prime was on for the spring/summer of '11 and that's it. ABC better go ad crazy for Nightline, the same way they are plugging Kimmel. Because if they don't, you know what Koppel said six years ago.... ABC did the dummy on letting Kimmel on after the news. I don't care if the reason is because Kimmel wants it, or the network wants to gear towards the younger demo, or to grab the Letterman or Leno, or Stewart or Cobert or Conan or whoever the hell it is audience. News trumps any comedy, anyday and ABC will really pay for all of the this big time, even if they get better ratings than Nightline. Pitiful, just plain pitiful. MorningNews 1456
I always enjoy the repors on Nightline, it's always great in depth reporting to watch right before I go to bed. I don't understand why ABC would care what Kimmel really wanted especially if Nightline has been leading in late night? Like they say, if its not broken don't fix it. In the end I see Nightline struggling and Kimmel falling behind Jay and Dave. Which is also upsetting because I do enjoy Jimmy Kimmel's show. TexasTVNews 1377
I rather see Nightline back to it's 11:35/10:35pm time slot, and NO, I'll be not watching Jimmy Kimmel. CircleSeven 1955
Small Follow-Up, if anyone cares. On the Nightline promos, they have a little caption on the right side of the screen stating "Set Your DVR To Nightline" or something along those lines. Yeah they getting that folks know 12:35am is too damn late. And to me, it clearly shows that the network cares more about a comedic show instead of caring about and slowing killing the best late-night program on television today. That's Sad Indeed!!
